Where was this guy when I built my oven 18 years ago? ..Great idea to cast the dome top..cutting those bricks was a nightmare . Firebricks from a WWII ships boiler .. fieldstone base and surround ..took me 100 days ..my second masonry project …still use it regularly every week or two . Hundreds of loaves, 700t 25:10 lbs of coffee roasted and the best pizzas in town.

I had several comments in mind while watching this, like "wow you might as well make this a tornado shelter while your at it", or "you really must love pizza lol" but honestly after seeing all the layers and the work that went into the oven itself I can see why you needed the extra strong base and it turned out beautifully.

If you spend over $15K for an oven you have to provide a very strong base to ensure no cracks in the future. Also the base was built based on the oven manufacturer’s recommendation. Thank you for your input and understanding.

A lot of American houses aren't build "sturdy" as we have earthquakes. Sturdy masonry walls come crashing down in earthquakes. Stick built lumber houses flex and you don't die in them. Different building types for different situations.

@RH-cv1rg I don't think earthquakes are the reason. There are parts of Europe that are much more prone to earthquakes than parts of the US (e.g. Apennine Mountains of Italy vs. North-Eastern US coast). But we still use bricks while US uses paper mache. My bet is on cost cutting.

@@meltdown6165 The strongest/most earthquakes are on the Pacific Rim. However, there are parts of Europe that are very prone to earthquakes. Have you seen what happens to Italian cities when they have an earthquake? The buildings collapse and kill thousands. Since 1950 over 6,700 have died in Italy from earthquakes. Since 1950 only 300 people in the ENTIRE USA have died of earthquakes. Turkey just had 55,000 killed in an earthquake. Yep, very sturdy houses.

@RH-cv1rg As far as I can remember those houses in Turkey that collapsed were not up to code because the developers cheated and used substandard materials and building techniques. The houses in Italy were 500 years old. But you are right, lighter walls can be beneficial if they collapse on you, like the paper walls the Japanese use.
