I have been fortunate enough to learn how to shop at a very young age. It's my superpower, lol. I have been ad shopping and stocking up for about 25 years. My favorite day of the week is Tuesday, when I can see the next weekly ad for my grocery stores. The best thing people can do is educate themselves on how to save money on groveries for their families. It really is a superpower.

I like to stock up on things when I can as well. As a single older person on a fixed income I have to be strategic. The one thing I can't copy you for is freezing whole packages of meat. I have to break them down into smaller portions for 1 or 2 servings. I have been meal planning for quite some time and it makes things so much easier. A few years ago I went though my pantry and both freezers and did a complete inventory that I keep on a spreadsheet. That way I can see what I have and plan around that. I found that bread, milk and cheese all freeze very well. I hope your hip gets better so you can enjoy the summer.

I watched a young guy deal with a package of frozen chicken pieces. He took it, put it in a ziplock bag and beat it against a brick wall until the pieces separated. It works like a charm and you get some aggression out. I do the overhead toss onto the floor method myself.

I ask my kids to help put stuff away and they have no how or where items should really be placed. They know some things that need to go in the fridge or freezer, but other things I do have to tell them. They are only 5 and 6 though so I'm just glad when they are willing to help me
@marlies74442 ай бұрын
I also like to shop like that. Eating what was on sale before is the only way to keep your food budget low. I meal plan around sales and what i have at home. Most important to me is to rotate. I always tell my family, new food to the back of yhe shelf. I have soda storage shelves for most my canned good. It has two tiers. On the top shelf you feed your items, it will run down and appear on the bottom shelf for you to take out. It holds 12 cans. I'm always using oldest first. Small bags, like mashed potatoes etc are in either bins, or cardbox boxes, with the oldest up front. Once about every 6 month I will check to make sure things are in order, and if I have things I need to use soon I try to incorporate them in my meal planning. I currently have no extra freezer, but my small one has bins, one for meat, one for veggies etc. Breakfast items are in the door.

Christine- Howdy!! Do you ever scramble up your hamburger, portion it off, and then vacuum seal it so it's super easy and fast to throw a meal together? I find this saves sooooo much time!!! I shred up a lot of chicken breast using the instant pot as well and vacuum seal it. It also helps condense space in freezer because I freeze them flat. My kids can take some out and make quesadillas super fast. It's a God send!

CHRISTINE, I would suggest writing the dates on the front or top of your food packages with a marker. It would make it easier for you to rotate your pantry. Also, write the date on things when you open them and when you put leftovers in your fridge. Then you will always know how old or how fresh something is.

One day you jump off a truck bed from a standing position and the next you look down and say nope and sit your butt down and slide off. I wish I could remember exactly when that happened. There is also a time when you stop just walking and start watching where your feet are going to land. I've entered that stage slightly early because of previous injuries but it still blows my mind that I have to stop myself from just casually skipping a step or hopping of my deck that's only a foot off the ground.

I shared your video/channel with my caregiver who has 3 kids at home & a husband who works out of town during the week because we were just talking about stockpiling to save. Hang in there. I’m 57 and have been on hospice for about a year. I had H1N1 in 2009, & my craptacular lungs gave out. I’ve had a bunch of surgeries to my chest wall and also have COPD. I never smoked (everyone smoked in the 70s/80s, though). I shattered a disc in my lower back, spent almost a year learning to walk again. Had an artificial disc placed in my neck in 2013. I’m on 4 liters of oxygen 24/7. There’s more, but I’m too tired to type, lol! 😂 My point is, no, it’s not about getting old. In my crap times, I remind myself that YES, it could be WORSE. I’m just thankful to be here for the one daughter I am so lucky to have in my life. You will be fine, and because you take care of yourself, you’ll heal in no time. ♥️💃🏻♥️

Mom always told me “getting old isn’t for the weak!” At 51 I’m starting to understand that!! You asked for fingertip stories, not mine but my brothers. When we were kids at my grandparents house, loading up the wagon for a ride and picnic, my brother was walking thru the garage when a wind gust went to slam the back door which had a glass pain in it. My brother, thinking he was saving the door from slamming and shattering the glass, grabbed the door and sliced the tip of his index finger from the palm side knuckle to the tip, and it got deeper in the finger as it went. My dad being the genius of the family helped him wash the finger and tuck the skin flap back down and wrapped it up to go to the hospital 20 mins away! While in the ER, that doctor unwrapped his finger and pulled the flap back open to clean it before the sedation or without sedation. My brother was a teen when this happened maybe 16. A pretty nurse told him to him to squeeze her hand when it hurt. She jokingly told my brother he must not be very strong cause he wasn’t squeezing her hand very hard. To which my brother said “I don’t want to hurt you too!” So she put his hand on a lever or something metal on the bed and patted his shoulder instead. My brother then broke the metal thing off the bed from the pain being so bad. It took forever to heal as they had to cut off the skin flap and it had to heal from the inside out, and they drilled a hole in his nail bed to let the blood drain while they worked. Not a fun summer!

Christine, I was using my Notes app for grocery lists, too. Then my husband's coworker said he and his wife use the "Out of Milk" app. It's free. We love it! My husband and I both installed it and synced them, so if he wants something, he just adds it to the list, and I will see it (you just need to tap and refresh). It also categories everything. You can make your own categories too. I added a category "Sam's" for everything I need there as well. Otherwise it's just broken down by meat, produce, dairy etc.

Mine was not a fingertip, but a whole finger. June of 2020 I had a wheelbarrow loaded with several concrete blocks sitting by my fire pit area. As I moved near it I somehow bumped one of the handles. The load shifted, the wheel barrow flipped, and the handles swept me off my feet. I ended up on the ground with the side of the wheelbarrow cart sitting on my left ring finger, and my glasses were gone. I ended up in physical therapy for 10 sessions. I was told it would be back to normal in 18 months. It's not. There are still rings I used to wear that I can't anymore. I did find my mangled glasses frames months later. They were unrecognizable. To answer you question about being old. I guess this is what it is like. I took a fall this week over a tree root in my back yard while picking up trash the raccoons had scattered. I've walked around and over it for years, but not this time! Thankfully I was able to get up on my own since I didn't have my phone, and I was still in my nightgown. 😅 Oh well, guess I'm old now. By the way, I shop Kroger for my groceries. Can not beat their sales! I also enjoy the fuel points perk!

Perfect timing Christine! I took a mini staycation to tackle closet clean out, freezer and pantry clean out/organization. It’s gotten a little out of hand, lol. Plus I’m an avid canner so time to rotate and take stock. The garden is in, I cut way back on what I’m growing in order to can/preserve what I actually use the most. In the crock pot is a pork loin with the Victorian BBQ sauce I canned last year (rhubarb based). So delicious! It’ll be wraps tomorrow. My neighbor lets me have all his rhubarb and it’s harvest day tomorrow. Yes, you do a little at a time and you spend WAY less at the store. Im literally down to mostly buying loss leaders at the store. I wait for the sales. Which is good because my vehicle bit the dust and I just had to get a new car. Haven’t had a car payment in probably 20 years so at least I’m (or was) debt free. New goal! Your total was amazing. I was behind a person at Walmart who spent that on basically junk which would maybe have lasted him two weeks tops. My mother and I just looked at each other and said “wow’ with our eyes 😂. Way too much processed food imo but perhaps he can’t cook? Compared to the other aisle who spent about the same but purchased real foods…lots of meats, potatoes, rice, etc. You could tell he cooked. We had a fun conversation about the difference between the shoppers. I know who’s house I’d want to be invited to for dinner, lol. I’m not judging anyone for their choices but it hurt my heart to see how much cash I could’ve saved that first shopper by either teaching him to cook or teaching him how to shop. 😉

Last August, fell dislocated my ring finger. ER visit, thought I would have to have surgery. Nope. Then reluctantly went to Ortho as it took 5 times for ER Doc to get my “W” shaped finger back in place. I listened to the advice to follow up with Ortho. Had dislocated same finger as a child. Pain, swelling was unreal! After the Third week going to Ortho , and Therapy, I had actually fractured the bones at the joint of that finger. Plus two other fingers! And had bone sliver at base of finger, and sheared off the side of my pinkie bone! Swelling was painful, in a brace for 4 months. No surgery. Just physical therapy, that I had to talk myself into setting up and going to. Never broke anything before, dislocated my knee and did not go to ER. I was young and no insurance. I had to talk myself into the follow up visits , the therapy. Just a finger! Also have realized, same finger now swells daily, nightly. Have to do the therapy exercises each day. To retain movement and not be in pain. Was told one year or longer for injuries to heal. I was on a computer 12 hrs a shift, with the full brace on fingers and arm. Doing the exercises . I still do the exercise everywhere! To keep fingers straight, not hunched up or crooked. I now wear a 10-11 on my ring finger. Was a 7-8 . My coworker told me once before, he cried more as a child when he broke his finger. Than he did after having brain surgery. That was when I realized, it really hurt. And I was not being a baby. That was when I dislocated my pointer finger tossing the garbage bag in the trash can. He would make fun of everything, but not me wincing and having tears in my eyes trying to type all day long. Was diagnosed with hypermobilty of my joints, after this last go round with dislocating my finger. My reply was, lesson learned not to try to catch yourself on hill while toting 30 lbs. just land on your butt!!

I’m so sorry about your hip injury, Christine. May it heal quickly so that you’re back on your bike soon! Question about freezing the rice to kill any possible bugs. Do you put it on the shelf after a couple of days in the freezer without any problems with condensation?

It takes time to heal. I started using insulin around 4 months ago for diabetes and feel so much better. I probably have another broken ankle from an electric wheelchair user who can’t control it and probably broke it twice in 8 weeks. It’s so frustrating as I struggle with so much.

There is primarily one grocery store where I live. They have crowded out any competition and there is no way that I can find deals like you find. They are a very expensive store.

Ever since I’ve discovered your videos a couple years ago, I never pay full price for groceries anymore!! Only find the clearance or sale items! It has made me a better shopper and also cook with working with what you have. 😊

I only shop online Walmart, because firstly I can have it delivered (medical) and because I know I'm always adding to my basket unnecessarily. I find it extremely difficult to shop/save for one person. I do make a couple meals and freeze them but space is limited and I make repetitive meals.

As a fellow grocery-shopping-supersaver, I never even look at the cereal and cake mixes. I have no idea what to do with it. I find it much cheaper to cook breakfast food from scratch from whatever I have in abundance because it was on sale. Ricotta pancakes, banana pancakes, apple cinnamon oatmeal, tomato and scallion omelet - whatever fresh ingredients _might_ go not-so-fresh they become a base for a breakfast. Also, we are Northerners, we almost never eat cold breakfast, always hot, and won't allow anything green go to waste (because it is precious and expensive), so some creative cooking + some space in freezer are necessity in my case.

I also stocked up on chicken this last week. I haven't seen prices that low in years. Too bad I didn't have more room in my freezers after I purchased a quarter beef last month 😂

Tip: bulk cheese ages in the fridge .. Try 8 yr cheddar. It's awesome.

I wish you well with your recovery. I’m just now getting over a shoulder sprain from skiing in February. Getting old sucks.

one thing I like about being a cashier at a grocery shop is seeing the yellow prices (clearance for dates) I adore milk especially from jersey cows. those are 16 danish crowns for a litre. I found them for 5 crowns so now my fridge is full and I pushed some on my son. they are semi-skimmed so I freeze the excess. looking to upgrade my freezer. have an older box, want some cabinet freezers. they might not be as ecconomical as a box but being able to find what I need quickly will be a blessing.

I use a blender or a stick blender to my thawed 10% coffee creamer and you cannot tell it has been frozen. Love my chest freezer (thats the same as your box freezer)

I watch a lot of meal prep and prepping channels. It has really opened my eyes to how much people waste on buying stuff because they don’t pay attention and buy on sale. It has made a huge difference in our budget. Great buy on the bacon.

We just opened a box of cereal that was two years past it's best buy date and it was great. Not stale.

40# of boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs? I break out the pressure canner, and jars! Done that 3x! Makes the BEST chicken broth and chicken that is quick to the table. Better taste & texture than factory canned, no extra chemicals. Fabulous in casseroles, too. 🎉

Great tip to set aside a % of grocery budget for super deals. Here: 79c lb chicken 1/4's per case (butcher gave me 5 for 75c lb). I pressure canned 3 & made bone broth. 😊

Lol.....oh my goodness...the hip sprain..pitiful. Yes, I think that's what it is like to be old. I am 52, and I have learned to be careful, and you have to be smooth and calculated with things. Somebody tell me how to stop my knees from making noise when I squat! That would be great!!! I still run everyday and will continue to run everyday. I heard the phrase, "bionic senior" the other day, and it sounded good to me! Good grief!!! Am I a "senior?" Yuuuiiiiish!!! 🧡

My kids laughed at my basement grocery store but when tp was not available in stores guess where they came to! My son was setting up his own place and i sent him to mom's store with a big garbage bag. He left with two full bags. And a bbq and the tank, a decent lawn chair, an exercise bike and a quilt i had made.

First morning in my new house I sliced my finger and thumb open taking a knife out the packet. Made unpacking after moving super difficult and even more stressful than it already was! Hope you are feeling better and more yourself soon Christine!

Great video! You've overcome so much in the last year. Just keep swimming...! I am a sale, clearance food junkie! I get you completely. Buy cheap, the food tastes the same. I find awesome meat clearances at my local Albertsons on Tuesday afternoon. Have you tried that at all? Mine gets rid of their weeks special before the Wednesday official sales. Has saved me bundles. The comments you made about people being upset with how "little" you spent on that week's groceries would benefit greatly by watching your monthly breakdowns. One week next to nothing, the next week is a stock up. It balances out in the end. Thanks Christine!

I cut my knuckle almost off at work when I was a hairdresser while cutting someone’s hair. It was pretty rough and because of where it was it was hard to keep it from reopening constantly even with stitches. I sustained a lot of on the job hand injuries, but that was the worst.

I love it when you do these types of videos! I always look for the sales at Fred Meyers but sometimes I’m not sure what is a good deal/stock up price. Please do more of these! Or like a sales ad breakdown! Love your channel! 🤩🤩

My October '23 until May '24 was as good as yours. October - torn meniscus, December - Covid, April and May - pneumonia. In Australia we have taxes on food, a GST similar to Canada's VAT. We're not taxed on single ingredients, just prepared foods.
