Oh ya, the expensive thing was a Weber BBQ. Every three years I’d have to replace my crap Walmart BBQ and my family would buy me another one for Fathers Day until I finally broke the cycle and put down the big bucks on a Weber. Five years later it still looks like I just brought it home and it’s an infinitely better cooking experience. Really expensive thing wins the total cost of ownership argument this time!

@Douglas Blake "the only real difference"? Without knowing the details of his system, that's pretty bloody unlikely. Not defending rabid audiophiles, but your position just sounds like the converse of theirs. The reality is home theatre cost/benefit isn't linear and his system, while probably better, doesn't necessarily justify the cost.

My grandfather had a say: “I’m too poor to buy cheap things” . This somewhat also covers this. But even for those more expensive alternatives (probably more future proof and more suited for your hopes) it’s a must to do your research! I learned this on my own skin, or better said on my own wallet :) Edit: My latest example of this was buying a pair of KEF LSX instead of separates… after 2 months of using them I’m congratulating my self for doing it although at the start I wasn’t so sure it was the best option.

Alexandru, really good comment from your grandfather! I learnt it late but since I bought Naim Unity Atom amp and Dynaudio Evoke 30 I´m pleased with the sound and userfriendly amp. Better to spend a good amount of money right away instead of contiously replace the low cost units. I don´t know if you have Dynaudio brand in the states but I really liked the smaller floorstander Evoke 30.

@@johanakerblad339 We have Dynaudio here in Romania but I haven't had/listened to them. I've had for a long time now a pair on MonitorAudio GS20's for the living room and a pair of B&W CM1 (S1) (moved them to the country side and replaced them with LSX's) . The speakers I don't regret but the amps somewhat I do :) but well I was a "beginner" at the time of purchase and also the internet wasn't so full of good info at that time to get documented better, and also good resellers were kind of sparse.

@@KristiWright Yeah, for example use a Denon RCD-M39 to drive the B&W CM1 :) such a bad decision, but at least I stuck with it some time to avoid further expenses. He set out to search the garage sales and found some old 2 way 8 inch Cerwin Vegas, early 2000 Sony receiver, Sony CD player, Oak stand. Not comparing to anything in this video, I just got a kick out of watching him get excited, and just how quickly he was able put together something that sounds pretty fkn good. The way you wrapped this up reminded me of an article I read about why churches would buy 3 sound systems. The first one they do as cheap as possible. The second one is patches and upgrades to the first system to try to make it better. Then they finally buy what they actually need and should've bought to begin with.

I generally agree with everything you said. The ONLY contrarian perspective to what you have said is the person who is on the upgrade path and wants to upgrade component by component, and have the flexibility to do so. Buying an all-in-one powered bookshelf speaker requires that if you want to upgrade, you need to basically upgrade speaker, amp, DAC, etc. all at once. In full transparency, I have a powered bookshelf system as well as a component system, and feel both are great in their specific use case. Love your content!!

Great vid. As a home HiFi builder, you’re bang on. All in will always be cheaper than separates when they are on the same level. The simple cost of having multiple power supplies will make the use of separates costlier.

I’m only a couple of years down my audio journey as a music-obsessed person of many years and honestly, I find many of the audiophile community to be borderline toxic. I spent my time in forums getting told what to do, what to spend, how far apart to have my speakers, how much toe in to have, to recarpet the floor in my listening room, to put up acoustic treatment, to take down my artwork…. To spite them all: I bought Klipsch The Fives because it ticked every box for me and eliminated so much clutter and I’ve never been happier listening to music again :) Great video.

When I was a budding audiophile some quarter century ago I spend a lot of money upgrading all the time after advice from dealers and fellow audiophiles alike without ever coming close to being really satisfied with the sound. Then I moved homes and suddenly most gear sounded fine to great. That taught me a very valuable lesson in the hifi hobby. Ears and room first, taste next and then dead last the minutia of different gear, fine-tuning one could say. That approach has since saved me a lot of money, kept music the focus, made me enjoy my purchases much more and I never had to experience being a recovering audiophile 😁

Last year I replaced the heart of my set by going digital: replaced my loudspeakers with active loudspeakers with an integrated DAC and dsp, replaced my amplifier with a so called systemhub with a lot of digital inputs, two analog inputs and a build-in streamer. Also sold my expensive audiophile cables and this year I also done this for my headphone setup: sold my dac/amp and headphone and bought an expensive wireless headphone back for the same price as I sold my dac/amp and headphone. These changes gave me a lot of peace, because I became a prosumer instead of an audiophile. BTW, still using an oldschool sacd-player and turntable because of the amount of music I have besides the streaming services.

You guys really nailed it right in the head on this one. Any time I’ve tried to do these types of comparisons the math never works out, especially when you factor into in the necessary accessories to make everything work together. Kristy’s comments particularly hit home when dealing with other people’s recommendations. Compromised solutions are exactly that. Even if you can get the price down the difference in price will likely be negligible and the components make not work well together as well as the original solution.

You make a lot of great points in this episode. I think what upsets me more in forums or discussion groups is where commenters tell someone that is very proud of their purchase that it just plain sucks. There’s a huge amount of rudeness to folks seeking open advice as well. As far as math, I happen to like vintage equipment because I’m well..vintage. I think people that buy it love the aesthetic as much as the sound.

I just recently saw this on a review where someone names himself "Cheap" reviewing a PS Audio Sprout 100. I currently own one and saw the same example of the reviewer trying to have viewers consider going to a bunch of separate components than buying the Sprout. I have everything already installed in the Sprout and it sounds great. I don't need all the wires and worry about getting good sound and value when I already have the engineering from PS Audio doing it for me. Set a budget, do your research, and most importantly, buy what YOU want, not what someone else wants. The trap i think a lot of people fall into is thinking that advice from an experienced individual (while helpful) should have more weight than your own personal tastes, but, amazing concept here, they aren't going to be in YOUR room listening to YOUR music.... YOU are. So buy what works for you and your budget. And if you have the budget for that $5k system, then by all means, go for it. Just don't be surprised when someone points out that their $10k system sounds better because blah blah blah blah blah....

This makes a lot of sense especially for new audio enthusiasts who live in smaller spaces and apartments. My experience - Picked the Klipsch R-41PM instead of the Fives/Kanto YU 6/AudioEngine 5. Added a sub R-120 (on sale) to compensate for bass, added a DAC and Equaliser to achieve better dialogue for movies. Bought the SVS sound isolation riser, generic bass traps + foams to treat room acoustics. These added up to almost double the price of the Fives.

i agree a friend of mine in 2000 spent on a sony complete system with 4ohms speakers and a very clean sound it had a 6 cd player, minidisc, radio ,and on top a hidden cassette player all complete 600€, like 12 years after he asked me to see the new stereos on a big surface where you can buy anything to your daily life ,and he bought the expensier system there at the time from LG,when at his home he asked me for help to install the system and i helped him and when staying a bit on his house he told me do you want the sony ,only the radio and the minidisc works ,i said yes. The diference is that the things i bought in the 70´s still works and those compact systems fail a lot after 10 years of use

That sound you hear whooshing over your head is my 5.1.4 audiophile snob self chucking my 200W subwoofer at you. 🤪 How dare you imply that nobody likes a mess of speaker cables snaking all over their living room? If you want great sound, you are obligated to risk getting tripped up by them and breaking your own neck in the fall! Audiophile or death! But seriously, this. We just had this discussion on Andrew's Sony A9 review. Wireless is the future. Interestingly, positive reviews of the A9 are now starting to appear en masse on the Internet. Sony has really scored a home run with this product and it's underlying technology.

Great content and so true. I've bought used and sometimes there's a reason they are letting it go or agree it can be a hassle. The home trial return policy isn't very good, lol. In the 1st reference they only advantage of buy separate parts is you could upgrade one piece when you have the extra money or better understanding of what you like were if you buy the all in one you have to replace everything. All the rest of the video is true.

In one of your videos you mentioned that the best system is the system you use and I’m really identifying with that today. I’ve been fortunate enough to finally build out my dream Goldenear system (Triton 2+ based 5.1) and while I’m waiting for that to come in, I’ve been adding other components such as a Cambridge DacMagic 100, getting ready for Hi-Fi paradise. Today I decided that I really wanted to listen to some Yo-Yo Ma, so I hooked up the DAC to my old Vizio sound bar and played some 24bit/96, and boy was I blow away. The Vizio sounded way better than it ever has. The mids are crisp and responsive. The speaker fills the room like never before and I’ve really enjoyed listening for the last two hours. Who would have known that a simple $200 purchase could produce gold. Thanks for all your content and helping me find contentment in just the music.

The only product I wasn't able to see in person & bought was the Kanto Tuk's however I did have a virtual tangible with Mr. Robinson's review and they are fantastic. If you have the patience best to save & buy big rather to not.

My system consists of an Adcom GFA-555-ll, a Marantz Preamp-tuner processor, linked to an Onkyo Integra EQ. I bought the Onkyo EQ new many years ago. The Adcom amp and Marantz processor I bought used. All are considered vintage. They sound impeccable. The speakers are quite new. BIC Eviction series 15. An old Sony Minidisc player, a Sony cassette player, and an Onkyo CD player and a Pioneer Elite DVD player round out the setup. Forgot two more. A JBL 300 watt subwoofer and a Pioneer RT 909 reel to reel complete it.

I started out my audio journey years ago, with an all in one Pioneer system, i.e. turntable, receiver, casette and 8-track. And I have had several systems over the years. Stepping up with each system upgrade. In the last year, I decided to upgrade for a better, high-end for me, system. After a lot of research and listening to several of your reviews I ended up purchasing a new system. I bought a new Yamaha V6A receiver after watching your review of it, several times. I bought a set of Polk Signature speakers, and a couple of Klipsch Subs to round it out, for a fabulous 7.2 surround system. And to separate my vinyl listening, I had an older Harman-Kardon AVR-55 receiver that I paired with a pair of Klipsch 620F speakers and an older used Yamaha PL-250 turntable and Ortofon Head and stylus. This is not the high-end equipment, but still, all of this is more than what I could have spent on an All-in-one system, and by no means am I an Audiophile, but this is what I was inclined to buy to nourish my audio and video appetite I look at it like this. It isn't what you spend, it's only if you enjoy it. And when anybody complements or says, you coulda, shoulda, or whatever, I always remember your words... "The only person who has to like the sound of your system is you!" And you can replace "sound" with Components or Setup. But whatever it is, it is yours. LOL Great Job Andrew! Keep up the Great work.

Andrew absolutely nailed it! I sold a 15 yr old Bose Lifestyle 35 series 2 5.1 channel home theater and bought Klipsch the fives. I am absolutely happy that it offer far better connectivity options and just one wire between the two speakers. And it cost a third of what I paid for the home theater 15 yes ago. I still kept the same old budget, but ended up with a Bose Smart Soundbar 300 + base module 500 for the bedroom for another third. Now am still left with another third of my budget for something extra - still not decided 😀😀 Loved Kristi’s comment about people hesitating to move from their old fixed ideas and try something new.

When we talked about cost I broke it down showing it would be more money 💰 I have used the used market because i liked something I have experience with. NOT to save money. You run the risk of inherenting problem and it may not have the lastest features that have become standard. My advice biy what you want because the compromise will cost more in the end! It may take some time but spend the money 💰 . . . Auwsome and much needed you two ! ! !

Great video as usual, love how you think about the bigger picture. Couple of thoughts to add - You might not want every feature in a one box solution (or an additional feature not included) - You can upgrade in stages with individual components (or it's easier to replace one broken component) - It's quite hard to do a like for like sound/quality comparision without purchasing both options

Buying used can save money, but shipping is always a killer unless the item is local. This is particularly true for hifi stuff because it is typically large and heavy. I've seen lots of "good deals" on eBay, but when you add in the shipping, it becomes at best marginal in terms of saving any money.

Indeed. I had been looking at some Wharfedale Linton speakers on Audiogon, but jeez, the shipping costs ate up most of the "savings". Why buy used if you are only saving less than 20%? You might as well buy brand new and have a manufacturer's warranty for that little price difference.

I found him a similar powered speaker from Klipsch on closeout that he could add a starter TT to but would also allow for Bluetooth digital in and an RCA in. I may also have had a sub out as well. Not something I would buy but for a starter, it checked all the boxes.

Unlike many, I didn’t want to spend all my time trying to match a bunch of components, swap them out relentlessly, research endlessly, spend a ton of money and go through re-selling in order to chase the perfect sound. I just bought a forward thinking system that garnered high praise from those I trust. For myself, I think our most valuable resource is TIME. I love the Buchardt A500. You are so totally correct. I own the YU2 because it is way cheaper to do that than to get something else for my "simple" desktop setup. As far as my home theater budget, I am good at the math part but the truth is if I have a budget of what I want to do, a safe bet is to simply double that because by the end of it all that is the final result. I'm at least $20,000+ into the home theater hobby. (And mostly done, I could always add another subwoofer.)

love the change of pace for this video! my first entry into hi-fi were the Kanto YU4's because they just provided so much functionality for the price, and I was on a strict budget at the time and didn't want to fuss with amps and pre amps and everything. I would not have gotten better for less. I've upgraded speakers since, but I still use the Kantos as my computer speakers, which I think is where the YU4's shine. I have no plans on getting rid of these speakers. there is just way too much gatekeeping in the audiophile community that really tries to get people to spend way more than they need to on set ups they deem worthy of being audiophile, when there are so many all-in-one type options now with active speakers, soundbars, or surround systems like those sony's that will be fantastic for the majority of people, especially when considering the cost.

A very important video. It's really important for newcomers to know that a decent "all in one" solution can be really satisfying. You don't need half a dozen standalone devices to get the most out of your speakers, and they certainly don't have to be rare retro pieces worth thousands of dollars. A lot of audiophiles are buying air, because it makes them FEEL like their system is better and more complete, a lot like fashionistas will buy clothes or scents that are expensive but really not much different from budget options. I mean when you're buying $1000 cables and special designer feet meant to decrease resonance for your speaker or subwoofer.. you could be using the money for so much else. I think it's ultimately more important to think about what you want to be able to DO with your system - wifi, Bluetooth, HDMI eARC, cables/cable free, sub/no sub? Is your space big or small, closed or open? Do you have neighbors that can be annoyed by heavy bass resonance? Think good and long on that, do research, compare components and prices, find sales.

I got an Anthem STR Preamp a year ago, and love it. Sometimes I get enamored of the idea of a particular DAC or phono stage and think I can sall my Anthem for an even better separates system, but it's just not possible. I'd have to spend several thousand more for a separates system that exceeds the STR's quality, and even then it wouldn't do everything the STR does.

I'm from South Africa, absolutely enjoy and appreciate the reviews and content you produce. I currently don't have a system at all but want to build one that's modern and will satisfy what I like, coming from being a car audio nut (Sq and ESQL). The Sony HT A9 with the SW5 subwoofer really looks like it would be ideal. Yet down in SA we don't have nearly the variety or even access to the options you guys do in the USA. And we're molested in terms of cost, even more so if looking to import which means buying blind. Second hand market is just about non existent and/or priced like new anyway. Wish Sony was better represented/supported as I would invest in that A9 with SW5 system, my fiance would approve as its so versatile as well. Keeping fingers and toes crossed that it may become an option/available here. Great show guys

My rabbit hole was different tho, I did not sell my sonos system and go on to buying more expensive things to save money, I did it to upgrade to something bigger and better, and ended up very happy, but the cost was 3 times more, and it's technically not atmos either, even tho that was not my need anyway. What has struck me the most over the last decade or so with the used market is the different price dynamics between the the upper and lower ends of the spectrum. My first receiver was my dad's old Technics SA-200, so I've probably kept better tabs on that particular line than any other. An SA-200 in good but unrestored shape used to be $25-50 (10-15 years ago), and is now $75-100. The upper end of that line (SA-1000) shocked me 15 years ago when a 25 year old receiver was going for ~$750, but now they're closing in on $5k.

I finally was able to get the Denon X2700H. Still messing around with Heos, sigh. As far as I can tell, nothing wrong with any of my open box speakers. And a really nice sound upgrade. So, from a reputable retailer, buying open box shouldn't be an issue.

Your talk about the used market made me realize just how good the used market is here in the Netherlands. It's a tiny country, meaning it's common practice to pick up in person and extensively check things out, "pick-up only" is the default, shipping something like speakers is super rare. I've bought a bunch of used gear for both myself and friends without any issues, but never had it shipped and always through a trusted second-hand site. Totally agreed about the other points though, I've recommended active speakers before because it's simpler and cheaper than getting all the gear separate.

Great video about the human condition - regrettably it infects multiple hobbies (photo gear, skis, cycling… you name it). One other crucial aspect that most new people to the hobby don’t understand until they’re much deeper into buying gear is the importance of component pairing. Buying “all in one” solutions in many cases takes care of that work for you - so in the rare case people do find a cheaper alternative, the likelihood it will sound as good /better is slim to none. PS. Your Decware Zen Triode UFO 2 video and your words of how it paired so well with the Klipsch Forte prompted me to take the leap into low watt SET world - and I achieved the sweet tube/ Forte horn sound I was looking for. Also had the chance to talk with Steve Deckert who is a fine gentleman and a HiFi grandmaster. Thank you and Kristi for doing what you do so well.

I have three points to make: 1) before you can do comparisons you need to be exact as to your real (not imagined) requirements. The mistake I’ve made is buying the expensive solution to get features I didn’t use or appreciate. I tend to over buy so I need to make more of an effort to look at cheaper alternatives. 2) when a product does too many things it is more vulnerable to obsolescence. My old Technics turntable from 1979 still works well with my 2021 components. My 2019 TV with Arc but not eArc is a problem. I had to replace a great AVR when things moved from component connectors to HDMI. My external DAC keeps humming. It’s why we buy components instead of a giant piece of furniture that includes everything. Think about what things are quickly evolving and what isn’t. 3)the problem with buy used equipment is that solid state components only perform within spec for about 5 years. After that they begin to degrade. Components like conventional speakers depend less on soldered components on circuit boards but amplifiers made in the last 40 or 50 years are mostly that. Testing the product to insure it is still within spec is no guarantee. My body was great and then in my late 40’s it began a sudden and noticeable decline. Solid state electronics are like that which is one reason people pine for tubes.

100% agree with your point on obsolescence with all-in-ones. I just made a very similar point in the comments before I read yours. Also, I totally feel and share your pain around eARC - my 2018 TV also lacks it. Couldn't get Atmos from my TV's apps to my AVR, an unplesant surprise. It's why I had to drop $200 on an Nvidia Shield (albeit that device has proven way more versatile, and useful beyond lossless audio than I ever imagined - retro gaming, the Android TV ecosystem, the ability to mostly control the basic features of my whole setup with the ergonomic, simple -and BACKLIT! - remote. All remotes should be backlit. Period. Anyway, I digress, good comment, thanks.

Around 4-ish years ago (when I careened into my 60's) and I realized that I was spending 6 full days in the office, I decided that life is too short to put things off and I decided to build the (99% vintage) system I wish I could have afforded when I was in high school/college in the mid 1970's. Not counting the speakers (Evo 4.2's which basically doubled my financial outlay) and having some of the various equipment's power recapped, I've probably spent somewhere around the $1,500 mark. I love my setup and other than a bit of tweaking here and there (I just added a Geshelli DAC which is wonderful btw) I'm quite happy....AND I've learned enough during this journey that I've been able to do some small repairs as needed and also set up my great-nieces and nephews with their own stereo systems.

So enjoyable Andrew. Audiophiles, love that word. That's why electronics are the best. You will never, ever, get 2 people (not related) to agree on an ultimate hi-fi, home theater set up. Why? Cause every so called audiophile thinks they know more than others . Which they don't. Look, if their hearing was that much better than the rest of us humans. Why the hell are ya writing for a magazine? Music, along with life is ... all subjective!! The absolute best system you could ever buy? Get your favorite band to play live at your house every Saturday night for the next 10 years!!! That is audio at its best, period!!

I appreciate your review and the focus on "efficiency." I define this as highest sound quality, most flexibility, and reasonable cost.

My only saving grace is 95% of my gear is all deals I got at pawn shops lol. Got a paradigm ps-1000 sub for $90 (nothing wrong with it all besides a few scratches) and definitive tech bp-6b for around $130 if I remember. Had a bad ass vintage JVC receiver my dad gave me but it bit the dust after 20+ years.
