This is a different piece of art. I shall have one of these fine pieces.

Nice! Really nice bow! The second Osage Orange self bow (flatbow, 64"), I "dished" it out along the belly. Used the curved part of a large boning knife. It was way overbuilt. It shot nice at my short draw length (around 25"), but it zipped 'em pretty fast when my buddy drew it out past 28" (secretly, I was like, ugh! Because, you should never let someone who has a longer draw length than you, shoot your self bow.). There was no danger of it breaking though. That bow came out very nice, excellent work!

Pefect start into a sunday morning: frost outside, cuppa coffee in my hand, dog on my feet and your video on the screen - thank you so much. What a beautiful bow, the handle is just incredible. As I said, it's pretty cold outside, but I guess I have to scratch my yew a bit (though the handle will be completely different: the bow has the hollow all the way through, and I shall tie down a corc cylinder for a comfortable grip and to reduce hand shock - that is, if the bow holds out that long). Your work is so moving and very motivating, again many thanks.

Interesting that you mentioned ring delamination, we cut a bunch of Osage in a grove in northern Oklahoma that yielded clear 7-8' plus staves. It split like a dream with medium sized growth rings. Everyone of them blew up about 10yrs in from the sapwood.
@SwiftwoodBows3 жыл бұрын
Dang, that sure is a shame. I've had the same problem with yew sometimes. cutting yew is hard work so it's really disappointing to end up with staves you cant use. That's the nature of working with natural materials though.

@@SwiftwoodBows We thought we had found the holy grail of wood lots. I didn't even get there till 2 buddies had gone in and taken all they cared for and I was still amazed at what I still had left to pick from. Al Herrin in his bow building book talked about something he called "wind shake" that described this phenomenon. It makes sense that it was weather related. He's a Cherokee (?) tribal bow builder from Oklahoma also.
@SwiftwoodBows3 жыл бұрын
yes, that's how I use the term windshake as well.

There’s a reason that our Nations that lived by the bow cultivated our bow wood carefully, as a generational duty no less. You grow trees and care for them so that your children’s children may hunt well!

@@lunkydog windshake causes delamination of the internal rings from over bending in a storm. Think if bending a green sapling in a circle. All the cracks you hear but dont see the damage. That's the best way I can describe it

Wow if I'm ever lucky enough to purchase one of your bows I think I'd choose this design, thanks for sharing your knowledge Weylin, I'm in the process of attempting a hollow limb design from a small diameter osage branch, hopefully I can pull it off, I have only a couple of successful bows under my belt so far,( ive messed up probably five or six more) so I'm still very much a beginner, but the more I hear abou HLD the more determined I am to build one successfully, from what i've learned they sound like one of best designs for self bows,

Was beginning to think I was the only'''''Left Handed'' bow builder out there... Great Vid,,& I love that design...''' I just have to make one now... Was wondering though,, did you cut a shelf into this bow ? Thanks again for the share on this Sir....Cheers from Mid Mo.
@SwiftwoodBows3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I didn't cut a shelf. I never have on any of my self bows. Its just a personal preference. I'd be extra leery of it on this design though

so you would have less weight from this shape at same draw weight right? do you think you could heat treat it without breaking? cause heat treatet a lots of bows in the last months and all were very light and shot 10% faster after all.

I've had to scrap quite a few staves halfway through the bow build. You never know what's going to happen, just control what you can.

why does the lower limb need to bend more mate?
@SwiftwoodBows3 жыл бұрын
Usually the lower limb should be bending slightly less than the top limb
@bjellison9053 жыл бұрын
Delamination of rings is usually caused by wind damage. It's called windshake
