Also, get yourself a Rototiller if you were going to be doing a build series! It makes cutting the dirt a lot easier than trying to do it by hand. Then you just have to shape what you want out of the loose material and hammer it back down.

Might as well use the excavator at that point. Works great for loosening dirt.

Yes obviously, but then the footprint is left and it looks mechanically built. Where the Rototiller is much more precise although I’ve seen a lot of stuff hidden by good excavator operators. Which brings me to the next point is I don’t know how good you are at keeping that on the side of a hill but a Rototiller is obviously a lot easier to keep up right on the side of the hill and if you do roll it, it’s a lot easier to upright as well! But flat areas that you don’t mind a large tread width, go for that excavator any and every time! That is if you have one at your disposal, which you obviously are blessed in that way and get good at operating that thing, because trail building is going to explode even more than it has, with all the E bikes coming out! Rubber side down unless your wippin or flippin!

@trailjockeytj6160 Makes sense. I don't have much time in the excavator but my dad that is operating it in the video is well skilled in one. This is our excavator so we have access to it as we need it. The area we are working on is a mellow grade so not likely to tip if you know what your doing. We don't have a rototiller otherwise I would consider trying out the method you suggested. I also don't mind having a foot print as the rain will wash it away and grass will grow around it. This isn't going to be public so I don't need to worry much about maintenance. Sure, I will let friends and helpers ride it but it's not going to be a public bike park or anything. There will definitely be whippin but I'm not sure about flippin 😆

You do much better waiting for this rain that we’re having right now! Or at least go back and re-touch it up now that you have some moisture in the soil! Cutting tread in dry conditions just gives you duff!

The dirt still had some moister from the last rain so it wasn't too bad. I was working on it today and it's much nicer to work with!
