Today I am cleaning up where the burn pile was. The ash is full if nails and bolts. So I am going to build a magnetic pickup tool out of industrial strength magnets.

I have a suggestion to improve your magnet tool, if you get a strip of heavy gauge plastic (about the thickness of a milk jug plastic), and attach it the length of the magnets, you just pull the strip away and the metal comes with it!

A lot of the warehouses and truck and trailer yards have magnets like yours hanging from the front of their maintenance vehicles to keep the sharp metal junk cleaned up. For trucking companies tires and fuel are their two largest expenses. When you get time hang that thing under the front of a tractor on the homestead.

Evan, I'm at a loss for words after watching your magnet video. I have had multiple experiences with store bought and rental magnets after roofing jobs on my house and again on the garage. They always sucked. That magnet you built is worth a fortune if you want to sell it. It's unbelievable how effective it is. Your video ranks up there with the best of the best of all the videos I've watched and believe me, I've watched a lot of them being mostly confined to home because of my age and bad knees. Tons of kudos to you.

Evan, I like your invention and made a similar one for use around my farm when I bought it 18 years ago. My pasture and yard were loaded with nails, bolts and other ferrous junk and I fought flat tires for a few weeks before devising my magnetic pickup tool. It was bigger than yours at 4’ wide but a little heavy for manual use. One simple refinement I made that allowed very easy separation of my collected ferrous junk was to mount an 3/16” non ferrous aluminum plate on the bottom of the magnets with swivel brackets I made that mounted the aluminum plate at each end. This allows me to swivel the aluminum pickup plate away from the magnets easily and the ferrous junk just falls off. The aluminum plate doesn’t stop the magnetic flux from picking up the junk and it doesn’t stick to the magnets either. With your skills I’m sure you can modify your tool the same way. One more suggestion - don’t pound or rap on your magnets. It will weaken the domain structure and the magnetic strength. That can be repaired with an electromagnet but best to not need doing that. Good luck and keep your excellent vids coming. I try to never miss them.

What a great build you came up with Evan, really going to be quite useful around there. Make sure you really fasten the magnets securely to a super strong outfit before using it underwater if the need arises. Lots of magnets are lost on flimsy retriever ropes. You have an excellent magnet for what you are doing so far. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.

Last summer I borrowed a friends store bought pick up magnet, similar to your homemade. I quickly learned to wrap the magnet with a thick plastic or burlap, to make it easier to release the metal it picked up. A side note, I live in northern Minnesota on what is commonly referred to as the Iron Range. Besides metal pieces, the magnet picked up just as many rocks.... I was pretty intrigued to see if and how many rocks you may have picked up.

JudithB Great project!!!! I work on my driveway all the time and dropping a screw or nail is a pain until I find it!!! LOL I sure dont want to drive my truck through when there are any loose screws around! I would run your metal sweeper around all the barns and where there were old buildings when you have time this summer. I finished putting my wood burning bbq together, and dropped screws here n there that I had to have. I have an extended pen type magnet and used it to find and pick up the screws. It sure made things easier!!!

A friend explained how to make an electromagnet out of the transformer coil of a microwave. I found one at an appliance store and wired up the diagram with a switch through the top of a plastic bucket. The coil, wiring etc fit in the bucket. When I switched it on, it was close to as strong as yours. So I carried it onto my ash pile and made overlapping bucket prints with the switch on. You could hear the metal hit the bucket. Then I lifted it over my barrel and shut the switch off to let the upside-down pile fall off. It worked fine most of the day, until the guy running it left it on too long and burnt out my wiring. Another friend said to get a permanent magnet like yours and mount it to something that could be pulled up from the inside bottom of the bucket. Then pulling it away would be like switching it off. As strong as yours are, you might need a little spacer below them to weaken it enough to pull it up.

Looks like it worked great. I had a customer who bought a small store-bought one for a project we had and insisted we use it. We rolled our eyes at first but then grew to love it the first time we used it. Hers had a mechanism where you pulled on the handle and the magnets pulled up and away and the metal all dropped off. Maybe if you have some pieces of plastic lying around you could try to rig up something that covers the magnets that you pull off and all the metal falls away.
