I do my necks with 50/50 Orange Oil/Beeswax. Never sticky and is extremely protective since the oil soaks in very deeply. The beewax fills the pores in the wood.

Satin finish on the neck has got to be my favorite. A lot of people have told me it feels cheap or looks bad but it is so much smoother and faster than the very glossy, sticky finishes. I think it is either a matter of preference or it could be a matter of whether you want a very playable guitar or you want to look cool.

Hey Darrell Braun bro. I do that fretwork every day. Good choice of fret file. The Hosco is a great file and it's one of my main files. The other I use is a Nicholson triangle with 3 safe corners. With those two you can do anything from vintage all the way up to Super Jumbos. If you really want the body to get dark, but still show the grain through, you can wipe on black India ink. Just make sure it's either alcohol or shellac based. My favorite is Speedball. It has a shellac base and cleans up easy with alcohol. I still recommend wearing gloves though. You don't want to burn through all the alcohol just trying to get your hands clean again. ;). Bob in Germany.

Looks great so far! If your buddy Brad hasn't already suggested it (I'd be surprised if he hasn't), an easy way to avoid "…stain all over my fingers" is to use nonporous gloves, either rubber, or some brands of surgical / medical. I've used them frequently in finishing gunstocks as well as when applying patina to stained glass projects. To get the body and neck REALLY smooth before staining, I'd suggest #400 steel wool. No electronics or magnets yet, so vacuum up any residue afterward, and you should be good to go.

I dunno. I was expecting a wipe-on stain finish because that’s what people can do by themselves. I know it’s very difficult to try to do a spray finish on your own without the right equipment. But in this case, for jJazzmaster, I would’ve been perfectly OK with you handing the body over to a painter to get a professional finish in a nice crazy color. Even white.

It seems like the stain went on pretty consistently over the laminated body, but if you want to take an extra precaution, a slip coat of mineral spirits can help to ensure an even stain. It takes almost no time at all (just a quick wipe with the spirits and then you can immediately apply the stain), and it helped a lot with some basswood that was giving me some pretty bad splotching without it.

Love the way this guitar is turning out. I've done several guitars (Pacifica, Peavey T-25 and Tele) with a similar finish style. I've actually just bought an American Professional Strat with a chipped body and my plan is to buy a Warmoth chambered Walnut body and do a finish that looks a lot like this. Stoked to see how this turns out and would love to know how the giveaway is going to work because a Jazzmaster was going to be my next project anyway...

I’m liking the direction that you’re going with this but wondering why you didn’t stain the headstock. You could have taped off the sides and back to just stain the front. Just another of my weird thoughts. Keep up the good work, can’t wait to see where you go from here.

Hi! Funny you should mention that! I was seriously considering it, but the stain would have definitely bled over the edges - even with tape. I might still consider trying it If it looks like it needs it after its all put together. Sanding the finish off the headstock will only take a minute or two :)
