Building a Letterbox (mailbox) - TheWoodfather

My first project of 2016 is a box jointed letter box for the front of my house.
I built it using my single blade box joint jig, from spotted gum decking offcuts.

Thank you! I love the look of the joints too, I made a picture frame recently in the same vein, lots of shaping with a file, but worth it.

Haha, it sure is Don, i keep meaning to rebuild it because so many have made nicer versions of it, but it just keeps working! I've got a really easy and cool addon for it to show off in a week or two as well.

8 years later, how's the timber holding up? I'm building one for my folks because the old timber one literally rotted off the post!

@@kaisergrendel really really well! About two years ago I noticed one of the joints on the arc was starting to separate, so I gave it a good knock to break it off, then cleaned up the joint and reglued. My real mistake here is that I used regular wood glue in the initial build, I didn't pay for the better waterproof PVA which I should have. If I'd done that, I wouldn't have had to reglue the arc. As for the timber, I think this was spotted gum? Super hard, dense, and resilient timber, it will last longer than I want it too! 😆

I see wet letters, but yeah, fine work.

Pleased to report that it's been out the front for five years now, through many storms, with no wet letters. Although I should have used waterproof glue, about a year ago after a knock, one of the arc joints failed along a glue joint, chalk that down to inexperience on my part. After resetting it though, no drama at all.

@@woodfather Thanks for the update. Yeah, here water seems to get everywhere from the tiniest of cracks or what have you. So after making my wood frame I am going to use house wrap, then siding to make sure it is dry inside. And man, love your shop tools, no wonder you call yourself the WoodFather, lol oh, and yeah, was wondering about your glue. I was thinking how brave you must be, lol
