Lots of rain has slowed our progress, but we're making the best of it! In this episode we start building the braced frame that will eventually support our screened-in balcony. We completed 1 of the 3 posts that will support the end of the balcony. We picked out an ugly log from our pile to use as posts and because the balcony is only 5 feet high, we can use the same log for all 3 posts.
Our tiny log cabin is slowing taking form and we are enjoying every step of the way.
Thank you for following along!

C'est si gentil!! Nous avons bien hâte de relaxer aussi, mais ça ne sera pas long avant qu'on s'ennuie et qu'on se cherche un nouveau projet :)

Good to see you finally got a proper hand saw, although, it could have been somewhat larger for bigger logs. I don't know why you put up with a carpenter saw for so long. Keep up the good attitude and work. You are both doing great.

Both of you need to take a looser grip on the handle of your saws ( no white knuckles ). I taught wood working for many years and most students grip the saws too tight resulting in the saws jambing in the cut. Also you won’ t tire so easily.

It would be good to put something between the concrete pier and the wooden post. For example, an asphalt shingle, some sill seal, a piece of thick plastic. Something that won't allow water to seep up through the concrete and rot the wood. One rule of thumb when building is to never let concrete and wood touch each other unless you're really sure it's OK.

Couldn’t you also scorch that portion of the wood with a torch for waterproofing?

@@theautodidacticman_ Charring the wood will delay rot, but it's best to have a physical barrier. Even something cheap (i.e., a shingle or piece of sheet metal) will totally prevent water from wicking up into the wood.

Charring wood for rot resistance is overrated. It doesn't work that well, especially compared to modern techniques. Wood should never sit directly on concrete anywhere exposed to the elements - it will rot there.

I am finally caught up do your most recent video and it’s out in a very short amount of time. I have enjoyed them all. But I am especially enjoying your cabin build. Nice job.

So cool! Nice work! Will you be treating the wood at all after stripping the bark?

Hand tools are fine just need the appropriate size hand tools.A Narex 11/2 inch chivel would really help yall. They are really nice and not that expensive. Also a good Japanese pull saw. I'm building a cabin and using mostly hand tools for joints.Yall are doing great with what yall have though.
