Im a woman that makes fish hooks and needles out of Baer and deer bones, and I make prehistoric weapons!!! I do it only using the exact same tools that would have been used in the mid Paleolithic. I have mad respect for what you're doing making something by hand from scratch, and doing it as a woman who's not expected or looked at to be doing these things which is absolutely ridiculous!!! But I completely understand the hours and hours and weeks of hard work that it takes to make a work of art!!! You go girl!

Just happened to come across this video, old school skills and workmanship from a bygone age, no matter how you dress, your comfortable and free to do what you obviously love and enjoy and created by the sweat of your brow. There's something about working with wood that to feel very comfortable with, as I am guessing you do. Keep doing what you're doing 👌 I am loving it. Les.

I salute you for your dedication to using original methods and tools. I heat my house with wood and I can only imagine the amount of work it must have taken to cut down a tree, drag it out of the forest, cut it up, split it and stack it, all by hand. No chainsaws, no log splitters. They were tough buggers!

I happened across your site and I applaud your focus to traditional skills instead of modern tools. Time and working conditions are to be considered, but learning how to read the grain and flow of the timber puts you ahead of most people even when using powered tools after this. Kudus to you. I’ve never seen any of your videos. But KZbin algorithm pointed me to the 3rd episode. At first I thought, well, she’s building a “mini” long ship (miniature model), but I didn’t want to start at the end. So I watched from the very first episode. On part 3 of this video, when I heard you were building it to row across the lake, that was when I realized it wasn’t as “mini” as I thought it was going to be. Your amazing craftsmanship is superb! Not to mention using ancient techniques!! Bravos to you!!! Can’t wait to see the final result!! Wishing you the best of Viking luck, and may your “mini” longship be ‘lake’worthy!

Great work as usual, and yes working in hot weather saps you quickly, here in Australia high 30's are common. But we have to remember that the Norse were from cooler climates and their building techniques would reflect that, swinging an axe all day would have been easy, but swinging an axe in warmer climates would have them also sitting down from heat stroke too.

@@jamesellsworth9673 Yes! I was helping to make a cannon carriage, and not only was the Oak extremely difficult to cut, but joints I made which were a good fit, held together with wood glue and strong Bolts, warped after a few months, and required repeated gluings and tightening of the Bolts over a few months. They settled down eventually, but cracks started to open up in other parts of the carriage, too. It's almost like the Oak was determined to destroy itself. I should've used an Axe on it.....And chopped it into firewood.....

I also came across this video by accident. Good job especially using the small axe. A hewing axe is a good idea for the straight sections and to make life easier for yourself cut V notches with 45 degree cuts nearly to the cut line and then use the hand axe, hewing axe etc to take the large parts of wood off following the run of the grain. Then you can tidy it up with the hand axe or a carpenters axe.

Actually, one of the most impressive things here is that you've moved a LOT of very ornery wood without gashing the living crap out of yourself. I've done this kind of work and I know how easy it is to make rather permanent mistakes (no, not on myself). It takes a focused mind to get to the other side of an effort like this and remain intact. Good on you!
