Building a Lost In Space Diorama

A regular model or miniature figure can really be enhanced by creating a diorama using it. The dioramas that I've built are inspired by scenes from the 1960s TV series Lost in Space. In this tutorial I'll take you through the steps that I use to create some of mine and perhaps you can apply them to build one of your own.

You are a true master at your craft, William. I'm 63 and remember watching the debut of Lost in Space. My parents couldn't get me away from the TV when it was on. I'm on my 2nd DVD set and to this day watch it beginning to end once a year. Thanks for sharing.

They are only near the dioramas in progress . I'd be afraid to take them to the place where they're displayed. As it is now, the kitten is determined to run off with some of my supplies, even when I hide them.

Absolutely sensational. You sir are a model making maestro. I cannot even imagine my childhood without this show. I only recently discovered why the show went from serious, to silly because the executives at CBS wanted Irwin Allen to tone it down as it was televised during early evening "family hour." Any fanatic will tell you season 1 is darker & more serious. Then later it became the "Will, Smith & the robot show, featuring "alien" of the week. Regardless I still have a place in my heart for this show. Most inspirational & impressive work thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing a few minutes out of what is obviously hundreds if not thousands of hours of a labor of love. I think what is most fascinating to me is you have recreated in 3-D what is likely a very close approximation of the actual set design drawings for many episodes which remain stubbornly out of reach for LiS historian wannabes.

Thanks, I'm lucky to have some blueprints to go by to make the sets accurate, otherwise I print out dozens of screen shots so I know what the scene looks like from different angles.

This video took me two hours to go through because I kept pausing to gawk in utter amazement! This is what true talent and love of these scenes looks like! There were a couple dioaramas that would be really cool the inside of the Gilt Proto's building from Target Earth, The control room at Alpha control - that would be a fun one. That is a series mystery, probably the most expensive set ever made and it only appeared for ten minutes in two episodes.

I can't believe I only just found your channel. Lost in space is my favourite space Sci fi show. Your work is amazing to say the least!! My favourite episodes are ghost in space and the derelict. That sounds like a fun project with your daughter. I'm actually working on a new HO train layout right now. All the techniques and materials that I used for my dioramas I learned about from my model train building.

Thanks, I like using Tamiya flat paints for the figures and Liquitex Basics Acrylic Paint for the scenery. The brushes are a variety of ones that I use, for the figures very small ones.
