Great video and beautiful design. I’m interested in hearing how well the dovetails stand up over time to wear and racking. I couldn’t help thinking this design could be adapted to a couch side table where the bottom supports could slide under the couch bringing the table closer to the user. Keep up the nice work.

New sub. Its your gig, so do what you like, but I'll make a suggestion. I like the timelapse aspect and the music and what you are making. I think some explanation of key elements fit into the timelapse would be as entertaining and would help make it instructional as well. Perhaps broaden your viewer base by doing so, as there is nothing to learn really from this. Even as an experienced woodworker it would be interesting to hear why you did certain things.
@shaunboydmadethis

I humbly disagree. AS a new woodworker, i'd like to hear the voice of the artist as they explain.
@Diamondback338
@Diamondback338 6 жыл бұрын
I personally disagree. As a professional woodworker if I was to do a video I would not be focused on explaining my work. It isn’t my interest to teach anyone, but to show the process and end result. There is a lot of information to be gleaned to those who have their eyes and minds open to what they are observing. It is not the job of the creator to give away all aspects of hard earned knowledge. I guess what I am saying is, when doing this professionally you must also be aware of everyone else out there trying to knock off your hard work and investment in IP. Some people will absolutely take an idea and run with it. You’re not doing yourself, the originator, any favors by explaining in depth how it is done. Unless, your model is more like the wood whisperer where you don’t actually make a living from woodwork, but earn a living from selling articles, magazines, instructional videos, and advertisement space. I like these videos more as production videos that illustrate the hand made/bespoke process and end product. As a new wood worker, I understand your position of wanting explanations. I was there once too. So I gleaned as much as I could about techniques from every source I could, apprenticed in custom cabinetry shops for 7 years and also worked on my own projects to push myself to learn how to build and design. And read, read, read + contemplate and test via project builds. Establishing personal relationships with other woodworking professionals is also key. Should the guys who put themselves through the rigors of earning their knowledge be expected to hand over their experience to everyone and anyone because they made a KZbin video documenting a build? I say no.

Hello Shaun I just discovered your channel. Great work! I see you have a 2030 joiner-planer I see you have a dust extraction system installed. Is it your fabrication or did you buy it? Do you have any photos/video/etc. of its fabrication? I have the same joiner-planer w/o the extraction system. Thanks
@shaunboydmadethis
@shaunboydmadethis 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jose, thanks for your comment. The dust collection is all plumbed to my main dust collector. I have videos of making and plumbing that system. As for the dust collection specific to the planer and jointer, it is pretty simple. The dust hood on the planer came with the machine when I got it, I just installed the proper adapter to attach it to the 4" hose. For the jointer I just clamp a 4" hose below below and it does a decent job getting most of the chips. I want to eventually build a proper enclosure under the jointer to really seal it up. Hope that helps.
@MyJosePrado
@MyJosePrado 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I'll check w Makita to see if they still distribute the dust hood for the planer. I got mine used and so it did not include the hood.

Thanks, really appreciate it! The shop space is somewhere around 700 square feet, not including the back room and the bathroom. I wanted to have the table saw and the assembly table be the center point, and everything else organized around that. It has taken a bit of rearranging, but I think I have it organized really well now.

This this this! It probably took forever to edit (did it?), but the transitions and pacing made for an eminently watchable video. Gorgeous work and a great eye for both still and moving pictures. ;)

Really appreciate the kind words! Editing takes some time, but I enjoy it. The hard part for this one was filming it all to flow together. It was a fun challenge, though.
@WimPrest
@WimPrest 6 жыл бұрын
Two questions: 1) what do you design your stuff ahead of time in? (assuming you do) 2) Did you map out all of the transitions in this ahead of time as well?
@shaunboydmadethis
@shaunboydmadethis 6 жыл бұрын
Most of the time just pencil and paper, then do a full-size version on a piece of MDF, and make templates from that. I have dabbled with Sketch-up, but should probably start learning to use it more. With the video, I tried to think a few shots ahead as I was filming, but couldn't really plan too much. Too many things can change along the way, so I tried to just figure it out on the fly.
