Hello Everyone,
Today, we begin our journey into a new model railway adventure. A group has formed, called the Nearly Competent Modellers Association, and we're building a OO gauge modular layout, with the hopes of taking it to the Statfold Barn Model Railway event in April.
This video is sponsored by our friends over at Grainge and Hodder - check out their website here!

Check out the event details for the Statfold show!

A Video featuring :
Lawrie - Presenter, struggling with everything
Charles - Railway Builder, progressing well
Dave - Railway Builder, strangely competent

Amazing! Also, at 3:40 Elaine of "Elaine's Trains" needs to stock at least a few cars. Leaving the name "Elaine's Trains and Automobiles" on the table is madness.

Great project thanks Lawrie, Charles and David. In the 1970s, Malvern Railway Club built a modular coarse scale O gauge layout in a dumbbell shape with two reversing loop stations and a variable amount of double track mainline in between. One operator was needed at each end. Each operator had a panel diagram controlling points and signals and thence the power feed to each train. I guess our membership included someone with metal working skills because all our baseboards were carried on welded steel frames.

You're stealing our idea we haven't announced yet!! Harumph! We are building the Hyce branch to HO freemo standards! Let there be more model train shenanigans!

I, or better said my father has got a model railway. We have started to build it when I was about four years old. He has promised that it would be ready for christmas. Now I am 14 years old and we have 2 model railways: The one that should be finished since more than 10 years and a nearly 40 yrs old garden railway. The older railway which actually works is just one oval doubletracked loop with a big station for up to four trains, a railyard for another four trains (one train being 7 wagons/coaches like the ones which are used on ÖBB Railjets or DB ICEs + a loco like the ÖBB Taurus (1116/1216/...16) or the 1042/1142) and two loops to change tracks and direction (also sore of doubletracked). The rails were just bolted onto wooden plates that came off an old shed (these p,anks are over 100yrs old and currently rotting away, we will have to replace them). The other railway however does not run. There is always new problems hidden somewhere beneath the really complicated system of cables which I like to call a big colourful mess. A month ago we hooked up the oldest bit of track to electricity to try out if it worked and it really did... ...on that day. The next day we tried it out again to test out the signals and switches and something started burning beneath the control board. This issue has been fixed but I´m sure that there will be many more.

What an extremely interesting idea! Don't think i have ever heard of a railway that where you can simply swap the boards around. Fantastic! Can't wait to see it all together in it's various options!

Were using a load of these at our club in Daventry. They are serious quality and not too far away from me either. Id probably have gone with Gorilla glue though. Or extra strong Evo Stik

This will be interesting to see on the Statfold weekend. I should be there this year but not the general public but as a layout operator.

Plywood gets a bit thicker than its nominal thickness due to humidity, so tolerances have to be applied to all cutouts. Been there, done that.

If you ever want something more standard as a suggestion to newbies. The Standard TTraK is exploding over here in the US and Japan. Its becoming a popular option even for home layouts with how easy it is to build a module kit and how easily they can interface with others.

The 16mm association have a separate group, for modules. They display at a lot of shows, I'll be helping at the Llangollen Show (11th of May) and the Bala show (21st-22nd of September)

I love the idea and some friends and I talked about doing something similar Making it dc control though I have a hard time getting my head around. Most of my friends are dcc and even ignoring that side of it you are able to have a lot more possibilities, switching etc while still having simple wiring with dcc. For dc to have similar movement capabilities as dcc you need really complex wiring
@jdenm8
@jdenm8 11 ай бұрын
He clearly said it in the video. None of the people involved are into DCC. The wiring isn't that difficult provided you set up the districts properly.

This was great to see, and a lot of different approaches but to the same eventual effect. :) I'm really looking forward to see how these all turn out. sorry for the delayed comment, I watched this the other day whilst at my parents house, they are now avidly following the channel too. by any chance do you have the Instagram accounts of the others so that I could follow and support them too? I quite like Charles and his personality so would be good to see more of them. have you ever done a 'meet the team' type video that I can search for? :) I wish you all well with the project and cant wait to see more.

@@lmm ah fair enough, if they do let me know. :) fair enough, could make for a good video and shouldn't be too hard to id assume... lol, my mind is just going to a thunderbirds styled thing of the members rotating behind the LMM badge and showing their name, as a voice over says about who they are, their role in the organisation, background and special skills... that could be awesome. if only making videos were as easy as conceptualising.
