I made one of those engines in my collection and I think one of them is German

You should have called your loco, "The Old Spotted Hen" because it's driver often cackles like one :D

Nice video, my list would be 1. NNR 2. BVR 3. MNR 4. WWLR 5. WRR 6. Bressingham 7. County School (does that count?) Being a Norfolk boy I've spent many hours on these lines as a kid, as an adult and as a dad. Got a couple of photos that sum up what this places mean to me. The first is of my brother and I as kids with our grandad on the platform at Dereham. The second is of my two kids with their nanny and grandad (my parents) in a BVR carriage. Special places. Also as a Norfolk boy I can begrudgingly say that the MSLR looks good and I hope they can continue to expand.

Not much love loss leaving out MNR. Sadly it doesnt have half of what any of these great heritage railways have. Being the top 5 clearly means the bure vally will be in the top 6 next year 😂

I love how happy you are when the motor fires up rather sooner than you thought it would. No wrecks or broken engine parts. A little brake adjustment and it sounds like this loco is a runner.

Just found this gem ! I was a student at Leeds University in the early 1970s and became involved in the running of the goods trains on the Middleton Rly. I learnt to drive Sweet Pea and I know first hand how difficult it often was to get it started. You did it on a dry and mild day. Imagine doing that on a wet, cold November evening, with no shed to shelter you. In those days we worked out of Clayton's yard (down the branch on the west side of the motorway) and would take a single loaded 16 ton mineral wagon up the grade to the Middleton 'main line' then reverse, drop down through the tunnel and stop at the junction before the passenger platform, to change the points and go down the Balm Road branch to the BR exchange siding. I recall one damp night when the loaded wagon propelled us staight through the junction and I really thought we were going to take the ancient iron gates out at the buffer stops! I think we only stopped because of the rust on the rails.Happy days, thanks for posting such an entertaining video.

Just going to comment to add to the chorus that is essentially "you need to visit the mid Norfolk a bit" Great accessibility and brilliant regular days for all ages throughout the year with all forms of traction being seen.

I bought an n scale model that ran but didn’t drive and it appeared to have a plastic Christmas tree leaf stuck between the gears XD after that it ran perfectly but some of the push rods don’t have the pins holding them in place so one is just hanging on by one pin which means it still doesn’t drive XD

we are short of preserved railways in Suffolk, just the Middie and the Long Shop's Sirapite. :(

Imagine having 57(fight over this count nerds) standard gauge preserved railways almost none of which actually manage to sustain themselves without regular begging. What a ridiculous situation we have built.

This mashine ist like: "how not to build a steam engine". No safety valve, no means to regulate the burner, no speed limiter at the engine and no means to bring condensed water out of the cylinders. And the slider control is somehow very strange. The chimney belongs on top of a flame pipe boiler, if you have one. There need to be a shroud around the bottom side of the boiler to catch and guide the flames of the burner. Modern steam engines can have a COP of 45% like in the case of the ZEE-03 with superheating up to 900 °C. They hold the water in a closed system with recondensation. Allready the Noble cars from the 1920ies had (more or less) closed water systems (recondensation was functional only under partial load).

for me the TMC 9F advent's were far too many, one or at most two would have done! TMC have a very limited range of O gauge so OO adverts (which might provide income, for you were fast forwarded so failed in my interest)!! all of the railways I have visited and enjoyed in there own ways, but no mention, of the Bure Valley or the Mid Norfolk, Your commentary sounded rushed. I am sorry for the first time ever I have given a thumbs down for a vlog, I didn't enjoy watching it, but just hoped it improve which it didn't!
@lmm2 күн бұрын
Sorry it wasn't to your tastes. As mentioned, this was five of my favourite lines in East Anglia. Not every single line. TMC have a huge range of O, Over 1700 items. That's not limited at all.

Thank you lawrie. This is actually the most gloriously produced video youve done to date. And giving a thorough run down of each line, and their stock, really helps me fill in my knowledge, being down here in dorset of course. I do adore the midi stock. Especially that 040 that looks like it was built by triang and is ready for a giant hand coming down from the sky at any moment ! Cheers. And seasonal greetings.

Remember when Hornby didn’t make the rear bogie a solid molded piece of the frame and they removed the flange from that wheel so the engine could still make turns? 1970’s Hornby remembers

And I like that much more
@adriannash27053 күн бұрын
@ me too. I get trying to make it look good but they did it to the Hush-Hush and then every other tender engine with a rear bogie as far as I know and I gotta say it’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen intentionally done to a $300 model and that’s including leaving out axle bearings and using warped parts and hoping no one sees it

It's peculiar to me that this is the largest engine in the UK. I live in the US and just a few towns over is the Peer Marquette 1223 (sister to the 1225 engine that the Polar Express was inspired by) It's slightly taller and a little bit narrower than this engine but it's also an extra ~25ft (8m) longer. It was just interesting to me how much smaller the uk engines are compared to the giants in the US, especially since the 1223 is a rather modest size compared to the 1601 at the Henry Ford museum (which is the largest locomotive I've seen in person), or the behemoths that took on the Rockies (like the UP 4014 big boy)
