A patch panel is so that you can connect sold core cable too, and then use stranded wires to connect to your switch. That way the movement and plugging and unplugging doesn't break or damage the solid core as its more delicate; not JUST to connect to your switch! And will you just pick a way of saying ethernet cable don't use both (its a bit like saying ether, as in thor the dark world)

Ethernet cables that are ran to outlets from the patch are solid copper core, they have a maximum radius on bends and should not be flexed repeatedly to prevent the cores breaking. Patch cables are made with stranded copper cores so they flex. That IMHO is a good reason for using a patch panel. If you only have a few cables to run just use a 4 port box on each end, use the punch down tool to get good connections and if possible use quality patch cables.

Whoop whoop!!! Well done for saying Ethernet properly!! Also well done for listening to other people’s comment and not putting your rack in the loft. It was a good call. The loft is always the warmest room as it is and you don’t want all your expensive equipment up there overheating. Also great setup I don’t think it is overkill at all! For all those people who say it is they are just hating! I have 3 netgear Poe access points covering 3 stories and the garden and works great, never lose speed or signal. 14 Poe Annke cameras (maybe overkill) watching every angle of the house as we had a live in nanny and wanted to make sure there was nothing to worry about. Defo thought it was overkill when we was wiring all of this in, but now couldn’t live without it. So much safer especially if you have kids. Keep up the good work and I look forward to the next video. Also you should look into sonoff a little more they are brilliant! Has so much more potential then just a smart extension lead. Flash it and turn any normal light switch into a smart light switch with Alexa/google compatibility! That’s my next project lift some floorboards and find some cables!!

Alex - I would love to be able to work with you on your next home networking project. I see great ideas and a lot of potential coming from you and your enthusiasm for what you do is incredible. That said, please take my constructive criticism below with a grain of salt as not everyone's perfect and everyone makes mistakes. Coming from an ex-residential installer for an ISP and someone who is currently working in IT Support's point of view, some of the things I've witnessed in this video weren't the greatest and some of them were honestly great. For example, the termination in to the back of the patch panel wasn't the best. Each leg of the ethernet cable should be nicely flush with the edge of the IDC and a proper RJ45 punch down tool should have been used. I couldn't quite tell if the pairs had been left twisted up until the IDC so I won't comment on that. Failing to terminate properly can result in slow network speeds and potential outages as well as noise on the line. Although this may not cause too much bother in a residential environment such as Alex's house, it could potentially cause major issues within a business environment, especially with business critical systems. I do love the fact that you showed your word document that contained your cable map - a lot of people miss this out of their project planning and it can cause issues along the way unless you can remember exactly where each cable goes. Aside from the IT things, I will give Alex props on drilling from the inside towards the outside wall. If Alex were drilling outside towards the inside wall and was using a hammer drill this could potentially cause a blowout in the brickwork on the inside when the drill bit eventually penetrates. Having a blowout on the outside is always preferable as this can then be covered with the external accessories and/or a water proof covering along with a nifty bit of silicone. If the blowout were on the inside however, it would be a lot harder to cover especially as the inside of homes/businesses are usually decorated. That being said - Alex, keep doing what you're doing and keep working at improving your skills. I see a lot of comments from people that are straight up bashing you for how you do things and it's neither constructive nor helpful in the slightest.

@@wiziek Samsung Galaxy S10/Note10, iPhone 11/11 Pro, the latest Intel WiFi cards (in laptops like the Razer Blade 15 Advanced), and the latest Killer WiFi cards (in laptops like the Dell XPS 13) are examples of some of the devices that support 11ax you can get today. As for APs with 11ax support, nearly every major brand has one now, like Cisco with the Catalyst 9100 series, Ruckus with the R750, Aruba with the 500 series, and Meraki with the MR45/55. There are plenty of consumer 11ax options available from the likes of Netgear and D-Link as well.

@@eliasong2047 Uhm plenty of consumer options? You just listed most expensive smartphones, no choices for typical consumer, same with networking gear, enterprise brand or very expensive router from consumer brands. Do you even used something you listed?
@eliasong2047
@eliasong2047 5 жыл бұрын
wiziek Those expensive smartphones also happen to be quite popular. And it won’t take that long before 11ax support trickles down to cheaper options. It’s just like 11ac back in 2013/14. If you were installing WiFi APs today, you’re probably not expecting to replace them next year or the year after when 11ax adoption is more widespread. So why not do it now? For the record, I don’t have a single 11ax AP in my house, but if I were in the market to purchase APs today, I wouldn’t see why I wouldn’t consider buying something that will last longer. And the options I listed are options I would consider if that were the case, as I already use Cisco 11ac wave 2 APs (2802i’s) at home. In Alex’s case, I don’t think his goal is to showcase the most value oriented network setup, but rather something that’s far beyond an average home network setup, so going for enterprise class or high end consumer grade 11ax APs isn’t just suitable, it’s almost expected in late 2019.
@wiziek
@wiziek 5 жыл бұрын
@@eliasong2047 Popular? It won't take long just like AC trickled fast(it didn't, there are still products using N/2,4 ghz only, or home routers with fast ethernet/100mbs ports). Most people don't buy expensive phones, they are buying middle price or cheap ones. Anyway 11ax standard wasn't finalised until like few days ago so there aren't any final standard products yet. This is just like buying 5G phone right now, just wasting money. Get realistic instead of jumping on bandwagon that doesn't give any realistic benefits at this moment. And Alex is just showing how he is spending money, he doesn't really have any networking knowledge or expertise :).

Hey mate,I’ve been watching a few of your videos about unify products but read that SKY Q is a ball ache to set up. What ISP provider do you use? And do you have a video on how to set these up via the router? I’d love your input on this. Carl
