Oh my goodness! Thanks so much for the notification on new video upload. You've done a fantastic job once again. You guys are obviously loving it. I wish I could pick your brain about a few things, but I would rather email. And you had asked about our pond and a video of it. Maybe I can figure out how to upload it to my channel one day soon. I'd like you to see it and get your opinion on some things. Yours works like a fine-tuned machine, and that is what we want. Your water looks absolutely flawless. Job well done, and congratulations!!!!! Your family is adorable! Will there be a number 4? And I love your landscaping. Everything works great together. Oh, what is the small tree or bush hanging over one corner of your pond? I want one! 😋

KK Daniels thanks. Yes there will be part 4 towards the end of the summer when I finally complete the pond. I don’t remember the plant overhanging by the edge of the pond. I bought it at Walmart towards the end of last year on discounted price because it was tilted growing in one side. It is supposed to grow straight so no one wanted it. Well, it’s perfect for my pond because of it’s imperfections. Just an example that every lid belongs to a specific container. 😊

Love your pond. Would it be ok if my pond will just be 2 feet deep? I live in Kentucky. Thank you.
@kimuseni5 жыл бұрын
You have to dig below winter frost line in your area. I’m in Chicago, so my frost line is 3-1/2” to 4” deep. Anything not as deep in Chicago will freeze over the winter. Also, in the summer if you have high temperature like me, a shallow pond will means that the water will get really warm which the koi doesn’t like, plus predators can easily get your koi at shallow pond outside. If you are digging 2 feet, why not add another 1 foot. I do know of someone who has a 2 feet deep pond, then added another foot above ground for total of 3 feet of water. But he has to heat it and cover it good in the winter so that it does not freeze over.
@ntqn20015 жыл бұрын
@@kimuseni Thank you so much for your quick response. Frost line is around 16 inches in Kentucky from what I researched. I am just scared to make it so deep out of fear that something or someone could fall into it :). I am so glad I found your channel. I have learned a lot. A grateful subscriber.
@kimuseni5 жыл бұрын
Phoenix gaming and entertainment then 2’ should be fine for your area. And it will be easier to clean. The only challenge you have to face are the predators. Keep me updated. Always love to hear other koi keepers and their pond. We are all here to learn together.

What about where there is RAINY &SUNNY SEASONS (in AFRICA/UGANDA)instead of SUMMER AND WINTER SEASONS how could that pond be constructed, thax as you reply and for the wonderful job that you are doing
@mikeblanton68545 жыл бұрын
You guys did a great job on this...looks beautiful!! Your daughter will have her own show on the DYI network when she gets older..lol .I have 1 question, why do you cover it in the winter? I had a small pond in Valparaiso not too far from where you are and I never covered it. As long as it is deep enough, the fish will be fine. Just keep an aerator going and make sure there is a hole in the ice for the gases to escape. You can use a deicer if you want. You don't need a big hole. I never used one.Mine was about 36" deep. My fish were fine and they were even breeding. After watching your video I want to put in another one here at my new house. Again Great job!!!
@kimuseni5 жыл бұрын
Mike Blanton thank you! This was the first winter of the pond. And we are first time ponder so we are not sure how the pond will handle the Chicago winter. The cover helped with keeping the heat in a bit. The surface never froze during the winter. We do have a small aerator (aquarium pump) running and do have a 315 watts deicer plugged in. But again the surface never froze. We are now on its second winter, and we are doing an experiment and running the pump through the winter. So far it’s doing good but have to keep an eye on it all the time. Next week will be a real test since we are expecting almost a week of below zero temperature. Where are you located now? Spring is around the corner, so you have plenty of time to plan now so you can start digging in Spring 😊

@hoangcoin77305 жыл бұрын
What plumbing part did you use for the over flow from the 1st barrel going into the 2nd barrel. The part is black in your video. Also is there a reason you use 1 1/2 inch pvc pipe for intake from the pump and use 2 inch pipe outtake back to the pond? Can I use both intake n outtake with same size of pipe? Thanks.

What is the purpose of the lava rocks??? Your pond is absolutely GORGEOUS! And, PLEASE speak up when you're talking!!!! You speak very quietly and it's even worse when you're by the waterfall.
@kimuseni6 жыл бұрын
princed47130 the lava rocks provide a medium for the beneficial bacteria to live in. Works a lot better than those very expensive bio-balls or media.

Beautiful fishes and a nice setup you have there. Doesn't the pond gets flooded when it rains?
@kimuseni6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It’s a simple and basic setup. The liner is only up to the poured concrete height. So when it rains it drains on the gaps between that and the stacked stones on top. And the excess water drains from one corner which also pours on the vegetable garden next to it.

Wow!! That's a beautiful pond. You did amazing work. I have a question because we are building a pond also. What type of pump do you use? I could not hear you that well . Thanks
@kimuseni6 жыл бұрын
Amy Collins we are using a Pondmaster Danner 3000GPH magnetic drive submersible pump. We think it’s the best for the bucks. It’s around $125 on eBay or amazon. And it uses very little electricity. It’s always good to double the pump vs. your pond gallon volume. So for example if you have about 1500 gallon pond. It’s best to use a 3000 gph pump.
@kimuseni6 жыл бұрын
And good luck with the pond build. If you get winters like we do. It’s best to go past your frost line. I’m in Chicago, so out pond is 4 feet deep so we never have to worry about frozen pond even at the coldest nights.

@kimuseni6 жыл бұрын
Hamza Adrees I have a 3000 gph pump circulating the pond 2x every hour. The pond slopes down 6” from one end where the pump is. So waste travels down to the pump.
@hamza3616 жыл бұрын
kimuseni that’s fair, but koi waste is solid and builds up over time. I’m surprised your pump is picking it all up since you water seems very clear. How many gallons? 1500?

@hoangcoin77305 жыл бұрын
Just to be clear, you have water coming in to barrel 1 from a 1 1/2 pvc pipe and coming out of the overflow bulkhead with the same size 1 1/2 ?
@kimuseni5 жыл бұрын
1-1/2” from pond to 1st barrel. 2” from 1st barrel to 2nd barrel. 2” from 2nd barrel back to the pond. But ideally best if you can increase the 2” bulkhead slightly larger. I just did not have a larger bulkhead. I guess I could put two to make sure it doesn’t overflow, but the ones I have is working so I just left it alone.
@kimuseni5 жыл бұрын
Good luck with the build and keep asking me for any questions you may have. I also have 3 videos of how I built this pond and very informative. We are working on the 4th and final video this year. Would love to see your pond build.
@hoangcoin77305 жыл бұрын
kimuseni Thank you for replying and answering my question. You’re using a bulkhead on a CURVE surface of your barrel, does it leak like people saying on KZbin? They recommend using a UNISEAL instead.
@kimuseni5 жыл бұрын
hoang nguyen the curve surface is very minimal and I don’t get any leaks. I am not familiar with uniseal. I will have to read more about it. Can you tell me more about this and educate me?
@kimuseni5 жыл бұрын
hoang nguyen I just googled uniseal and I would not use that at all. I think that will have more chances of leaking. Also they are not sturdy. We have hot and dry summer and very cold below zero winter. Those gaskets will never hold up.

@kimuseni4 жыл бұрын
Combination of several things. First, I have lots of pond plants including a big filter that sucks up much of the nutrients. Second, I have shade using tall plants and higher rocks on the east side facing the sunrise. Third, I clean the filters. I have a video dedicated on how I keep algae control and away from the pond.
