Financial independence is something we all strive to accomplish, regardless of our age or background. Especially in a world that’s constantly changing and evolving, there’s no better feeling than the idea of financial security for your family and your future. Frances Cook, author, journalist, and podcaster, is here today to show you exactly how you can achieve that future. As a journalist, podcaster, and self-proclaimed financial mess, Frances has made it her mission in life to meet people where they are and educate the public on the importance of financial independence and how everyday people can achieve it in their own lives. Having worked for RadioLIVE, Newstalk ZB, and the New Zealand Herald, Frances is also an accomplished author and currently MC’s the popular podcast ‘Cooking the Books’. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Real wealth is not about money. Real wealth is: not having to go to meetings, not having to spend time with jerks, not being locked into status games, not feeling like you have to say ‘yes,’ not worrying about others claiming your time and energy. Real wealth is about freedom.

I just sold a property in Portland and I'm thinking to put the cash in stocks, I know everyone is saying it's ripe enough, but Is this a good time to buy stocks? How long until a full recovery? How are other people in the same market raking in over $200k gains with months, I'm really just confused at this point

I was losing my money trying to invest on my own but it was different withMARTHA ALONSO HARA. she has played a great role in improving my finances. Long before now, I relied solely on my work and salary. Right now, I have a way of making money without stress so I quit working for others. Great communication. I have opened my eyes to this fact during the lockdown with no options but to evaluate money growth. May be I didn't go all guns blazing, but I realise that money has the power to compound & needs to be respected. That a flashy car is only an opportunity for greedy car service companies to rip us off to repay royalty fees. That food tastes good at home & a job doesn't need to be travelled to... thank you for creating a wonderful perspective.

25x my annual spending... Well over 1 million dollars? Honey, my wages in the US with a masters degree in my job I will not MAKE 1 million before I retire after 25 years unless something drastically changes. I already live deprived, wear thrift store clothes, drive a 10 year old used car, have no cable or TV, eat out twice a year, and use a 4 year old cell phone. My debt is my 2 bed/1 bath house, utilities, healthcare, insurance, professional fees and insurance, property taxes, car tags, gas for the car, food, medication, pet care (not willing to give up my pets), and student debt. Anyone else in this boat with me? 🙋‍♂️ We cannot be expected to get ahead if daily living costs so much. My new plan is to trade the house for a small farm, grow my own food, and live off grid. Been practicing for years and was about to buy when the housing rush hit my town, and prices increased 20-40% on homes and land. 😤

I would recommend addressing any potential mental health difficulties to get you in a more positive space(I’m assuming from your comments that you’re not a very positive person). Once your mind is healthier and stronger you will have a different outlook. Good luck I’m sure you’ll figure things out and downsizing to a farm is a dream of my to be honest!

The thing about that is some jobs just can't be made interesting or meaningful, but are still necessary to the functioning of society. They also tend to be the kind of jobs that cause people to live hand to mouth. What about these people, like myself? It isn't that we are lazy or bad with money. But life happens in ways that don't fit the formula.

@@kimwarburton8490 actually, I've read that a McDonald's employee in France or anywhere in Finno-Scandia , like the Netherlands, that they start out at already a living wage and the job itself is considered a good job that people don't look down on. And I don't know how much the burgers cost, but McDonald's wouldn't be there if they weren't making more money than they were spending. It's only in the US that the wage and conditions are so lacking that people even look down on ppl in the profession, despite those people trying to be society-contributing full-time workers.
