Over the course of a year I built a 5.2 meter Panga Boat from the plans published by the F.A.O. Fisheries Technical Papers. It is a stable boat that cruises at 8 knots with a 9.9 hp motor. It is a non planing or semi planing hull design.

Great gift from FAO. The smalest model , in plywood version , is a lot solid and strong. Good job! Fish On!

I was surprised to see how much rocker this boat has, especially in the stern. I have seen these plans before on line but never seen one of these boats constructed. It planes off easy enough, but she does not have a fast bottom design. More a semi displacement design. Maybe a best economical speed range of 7 to 13 knots. I was also a little surprised at the amount the stern narrowed in beam compared to mid ship. It’s almost a canoe shape with a flattened stern to hang a motor on. You can see this boat was designed to be able to Carry a good size load for its size and have the ability to work in a coastal environment where the water is not table top smooth with smaller outboards in the 10 to 25 hp range. Good form for it’s intended function, but not a boat I would be happy with. I want a boat with a little more speed performance capability and a bit faster looking shape. Nice work on the build. You demonstrated the ease construction with affordable materials which were important for the intended market for this boat.

The panga design is a 4 to 1 length to width design and the original one was designed in the early 70's. The original panga was a plywood and designed for a 75 hp. They sip fuel and can handle swells and chop with ease. They also get up on plane very easily. This particular panga didn't have enough power. Should have had at least a 30. A Tiburon Panga designed by Jeff Spira which is 21 ft. can handle a 150 hp.

@ I am familiar with many of the Jeff Spira boat designs and am impressed with a number of them. Jut since his death, his plans and designs have disappeared off of the internet. I am also a fan of his series of videos on building and designing boats. I liked his no nonsense “lumberyard” designs. Good solid performing boats with practical easier to build configurations.

A nice honest seaworthy boat. It rides bow high with one person in the stern. It needs either more power to plane and get the bow down, or shallow planing wedges added to the bottom at the stern.

No , with that much power , it will try point the bow straight up to the sky. A waste of money for the 50 horse motor and fuel. Its not a planing hull with a ( flat ) aft run. Wrong hull shape.

@pakde8002
@pakde8002 4 жыл бұрын
@@miltonj4821 it would definitely work. You can use cabosil, aerosil or as some old timers say the best is just the clean fine sawdust from your sander if you're using a bag to collect the dust. I laughed when you said you'd just do it again if you had to. You'd be better off to set it in fire and start from scratch LoL. Once that epoxy gets in the grain of the plywood the two surfaces basically become a single composite. Sure it's possible but like you mentioned it's best to get everything perfect before you start out. Anyway your fiberglass would solve any issues of a few spots that didn't get glued properly. And the proof is in the pudding as they say. It all came together and looks great. I've watched your video several times in reference to my own panga plans that got delayed with the pandemic. Great job!

I found the plans online. These plans were published by the United Nations FAO and are easy enough to find. Although it is very efficient at lows speeds it is not so at higher speeds because of the rocker on the hull. It is a great first build, and if I were to build another boat I would probably build a variation on this design.

Nice job. Good looking boat. Just wondering, though - your jig is on "soft" ground. Do you think that may have played a part in that flat spot and the difference in material removal at the keel/stem join? Having built a couple boats, and assisted in several, I would suspect that. The hull will plane just fine with a 30hp.
@harryme472

I give up ... ITS NOT A PLANING HULL ....the run aft is..... NOT FLAT !!!!!! It will not plane at all. The boat is slightly beyond its semi - displacement speed already in the video . That is why its pointing its bow so high. It`s a LOW POWER HULL . Here is the link to the full plans : Take note of the curved hull lines aft . Also take note of the power requirements stated .

I used a meranti plywood for the skin. I believe it was called hydro-teck. I used a local Douglas Fir tree that was sawed up and dried indoors for a decade or so. There are many types of wood that are good for building with, and you can use something that is local to you.
