Walt thank you for showing real results using a non resonant antenna! Mine is a 71' stealth sloper, 9:1 unun, 50' coax, fed at the 15' high end, no counterpoise, common mode choke 3' from the transceiver. SWR 1.5 : 1 or less on all HF bands, 160 - 10. No tuner needed 30 - 10. From California with 100 watts & also QRP SSB I've worked Europe, Africa, Mediterranean, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Indinesia. I get 5/9 signal reports on daily 80 & 4O SSB nets using ATU in my XPA125B. Jon - K3MAH

Thank you. I was looking for a multiband stealth antenna and ended up having a go with the end fed random wire. 84 ft with a 25 ft counterpoise mounted on the top of my 6 ft high privacy fence. 9 to1 unun with a 1 to 1 choke and I am in business from 80 to 10 meters. Performing very well and suits my needs. I am originally from the Tidewater area by the way so I enjoy your videos from Portsmouth, Norfolk, and VB. 73

I used a 35.5’ random wire in an inverted L with a 17’ elevated counterpoise for a recent POTA activation. It was attached to BNC binding posts directly to my Xiegu X6100 (ie no unun). It worked really well when the propagation wasn’t great. It’s a great first antenna project because it’s so simple, cheap too. Thanks for sharing your experience.

When I was 17, I put up a 90 feet long wire and tuned it with an MFJ-901 tuner. Now I know it should have been an 84 feet long wire with a 1:9 Unun and then the tuner! I could have used that on 11 Meter where I was doing A2 code practice with my buddies to entice them to get their tickets also. Several of them had 3-6 ele yagis and were bragging about how they could take long groundwave distances horizontally polarized, but I could hear them too, LOL. Cheers, Davey (now 62) - KU9L

Cool story. I was into SWLing before I was a ham. I had a 60 foot wire in the attic with a single wire feed into the shack I originally had connected to a Heathkit SW717. When I got my Novice, I connected that antenna to a homebrew tuner and it loaded on 80-10 meters. Worked the UK on 20 watts with it and worked the world with 100watts. Not sure if that was a good length, but it loaded and it worked. Back then I hadn't heard of an UnUn and with the wire coming into the shack, had some RF issues but did I have fun with it, yes I did!

Hello Walt. I love your instructive, helpful videos. I'm going to build this setup. Thank you for this idea. How do you do this? 73s and thank you.
@COASTALWAVESWIRES
@COASTALWAVESWIRES 2 ай бұрын
Thanks! I just fold it over and twist then secure it with electrical tape. Remember that the measurement of the wire is at the fold over, so the extra wire you wrap after the insulator doesn’t count in the measurement of the length of the antenna. Good luck and have fun. 73, Walt

Hi Walt, still in ROK and rooftopping. The Rybo 7.6 is working a treat, thanks and a few randoms are working well.😁 I'm going to try linear loading a random length back down a 10m pole, where the unun is just above rampart height of 1.2m on most of the high rise buildings that I've been nesting on, and I throw across the rooftops 18 radials. It is easier with the Ryobo vertical strapped to railing or piping, but a linear loaded vertical might just be quicker to deploy than a long randon wire.🗼 At the current QTH I can operate from an apartment 2 floors down from the rooftop which is 30 storeys.🏢 94 meters at rooftop height. So it's getting down to ZERO 🥶 now, and there's no more working the DX and suntanning. Do you think linear loading a randon vertically is better than slopping? And what is the general opinion from the Coastal Waves watchers? Cheers from Alien in Asia👾 👀FOO IS HERE 🥶 PS: I thougth I'd using 10.82m and 1m extra for good luck.
@COASTALWAVESWIRES
@COASTALWAVESWIRES 9 ай бұрын
I do think linear loading is better, especially for DX. I think your takeoff angle will be better. I actually wrapped a long random wire around a shorter pole when I was in Poland and made some great contacts. Not exactly linear loading but similar. Helically coiled is what I would call it. Your height should really be a plus for sure. 73, Walt

Thanks for the vid, Walt. I use a 29.5 ft random wire, no counterpoise, but 25 or 50 feet of coax before hitting a 1:1 choke. It works great from 40 to 6 meters. I might try the 6.5 ft counterpoise wire and move my choke up to the transformer. Something I've been wondering about, maybe you know. Does a longer wire pick up distant stations better than a shorter wire? I'm dying to get HI in the log, but I can't hear them during the day.
@COASTALWAVESWIRES
@COASTALWAVESWIRES Жыл бұрын
I've always heard the longer the better but length also plays a big part in the radiation pattern and characteristics. That's why I made the 35.5 wire, it's very close to a half wavelength for 20 meters and those contacts I made to the USA kind of prove my theory on that. There's only one real way to find out, experiment and give it a try with the longest possible length you can.

Thank you for these awesome videos. You have had me bitten by the end fed random wire bug and I have been experimenting. My experience has left me very confused though. I find that the placement of the counterpoise really makes a difference. For instance I have a 14ish meter radial with a 5 meters counterpoise, I should be getting 40-10 but when the counterpoise lay on the ground I lose 40 elevating the counterpoise helps but what I see in your videos is that you the simply strew your counterpoise across the ground and all works well. What could explain the difference of results? Am I missing some basics here? Are there some rules of thumb regarding the installation of the antenna? Thank you again and I'm sorry for bombarding you in the comments but you seem to be the random wire king.

Hi Walt. Does the total 35.5' include what you wrap back on itself at the insulator, or do you cut it a little longer to be able to loop it back on itself? Great question and I really need to make that more clearer in my video. You cut extra for the wrap. The 35.5 is from the start of the wire to the fold point at the insulator opening. Also don’t worry about being exactly perfect, I’ve found that with a random wire being within an inch or so with length is fine. All the best and 73, Walt

I have a 99' random wire with a 9:1 unun. The manufacturer swore i did not have use a counterpoise. My problem is that i am getting rf back thru my house. If I used the counterpoise would that eliminate the common mode current? I am gojng ro remeasure the wire and fold it back to 84' if it ever quits raining. I also have a mfj 915 choke at the radio.

That’s the main reason I use a 1:1 choke balun along with the 9:1 and a counterpoise. Adding the counterpoise may help but a choke will absolutely solve that problem.

It will help as a choke near the transceiver and keep common mode current out of the radio. You might get by without it if you have a long coax but it will certainly help.

Walt, just added 4 x 5 meter counterpoises to my 21m Rabdom wire - which greatly lowered the SWR (replacing a single wire). But. - While 80m is spot on, the dip is about 1Mhz too high for 40 & 20. Would increasing wire length a bit help - a bit confused as we are looking for non-resonanse

Hard decision, I like them both. I recently built an end fed that was a halfwave for 20 meters with a 49:1 as a vertical on my 10 meter DX Commander pole and it was great. With 20 watts I was 59 from the Eastern USA to Australia. Probably best performance from an antenna I’ve experienced.

@COASTALWAVESWIRES
@COASTALWAVESWIRES 7 ай бұрын
Honestly the counterpoise length is not critical. From experience and what I’ve seen on random wire antennas if you are putting counterpoise on the ground as a groundplane it doesn’t matter. I typically just make mine 5 meters long for that situation. With an elevated or single counterpoise I have used 17 feet (5.18 meters) as a length as well as 6.5 feet (2 meters) with great success.

@@quickievalue6833 no worries, with the 33 you might find it hard to tune if you’re using a 9:1 unun. 33 feet is actually a half wave antenna for 20 meters and works awesome with a 49:1. Why would you want half of your antenna that close to the ground? How about putting BOTH ends of the antenna (including any counterpoise) as high as you can get them. I don't understand why folks do this. Another thing you may want to do is perform an actual A/B switch comparison between your EFRW to say a dipole cut for a particular band. Then, you are actually performing a much better test. Folks often put up some wire and make a couple contacts then claim that their antenna is fantastic. Fantastic compared to what? Won't know until you perform an actual A/B switch comparison with a "reference" antenna.
