I have one of those and the ATU is amazing. It could tune a wet noodle. It is even better than the tuner on my FTdx101mp.

Would a 1/4 wave vertical dipole for 10m be useful? I've made 1/2 wave vertical dipoles for 70cm and 2m that work well.

Could this radio be modified to work on 8 meters?
@Steve-GM0HUUКүн бұрын
❓️Given the lack of 8m capable rigs, a very good question. Assume you would have to modify the code controlling the PLL frequency. However, as it's designed for 10m, it may have a low pass filter on the PA and RX input with a cutoff just above 10m. So, my guess would be, yes, if you could "tweek" the software and perhaps you might have to raise the low pass filter's cutoff frequency?? I did find a manual which indicates that the receiver is a dual superhet with 10.695MHz/455KHz IFs. So, at least the RX intermediate frequencies shouldn't scupper modifying for 8m. Like many hams with a few rigs that cover 10m, I have no requirement to buy one of these. However, if an 8m version was available, that would interest me.

Here in the central Alabama area the hams are some of the worst. Now I'm not referring to all of them! The ones that talk about us 11 meter people like we're the scum of the earth yet they'll show up at a meet and greet just to stay to themselves and act superior to the non-ham crowd. I could easily put their call signs on here but I'll refrain because they need no extra attention. The gatekeepers all have one thing in common; narcissism! They are one of the main reasons I'll probably never get a license. They screamed for years that it was a dying hobby then the FCC changed the rules to the no code test and then those were labeled cheaters. To the uploader of this video; you are one of the real ham guys that want to only better the hobby and I can really appreciate that. I wish death upon no one because that's just wrong and would make me an awful person but... Sadly it's going to take a generation of some of these old farts passing on to get rid of the gatekeeper stigma. They've made it an awful hobby to cause someone like me to want to enter into. I'm nearly 60 and I've seen this ridiculous attitude since the mid 80's when I got real heavy into the 11 meter world. It's a pathetic double standard.

Hey Walt, big fan. Thanks for the video. I love building antennas like this to use at the beach. QQ: why did you go 64:1 on this? I usually see 4:1 on lengths this short, or otherwise no transformer if dipole. Always learning, and thanks again! Mike KC1VPI
@Steve-GM0HUUКүн бұрын
The antenna was a half wave dipole fed at the bottom end (End Fed Half Wave or EFHW). The impedance at the end of a resonant dipole shall be very high. Maybe 3000-5000 Ohms. So, to reduce this down to nearer 50 Ohms to provide a good match for the rig, you typically use a 64:1 or 49:1 UNUN transformer (e.g. 3000/64= 47 Ohms). Hope this helps.

Great radio! I'm still enjoying the QT80 though. I am going to think about getting one for my Rav4 because of it's size. It would be great to have a 10 and 12-meter rig in the car that I could take on my travels. I was just in Southern CA for 5 days and missed getting on the bands. This might be the solution. However, I'm starting to run out of space and reasons for buying radios but I can't help it. Thanks to you, I've found my niche in export radios and portable antennas. Thanks for all the great videos and Happy New Year to you and the family. I hope your wife is doing well...73...Hugh...KN6KNB

I looked for months for a radio in that range because I already have radios 6 meter and up and after watching many videos and researching I bought a QT-60, it does 10, 11 & 12 meter with a clip of one wire, it has tons of storage Channels and is 60W out of the box and with a USB cable can control it and program it, I believe right from their site the bundle was $250? now having had it 6 months I love it!

Interesting little rig Walt, I keep looking at them but still unsure. Having 10 and 12 at that price is so tempting for mobile static work. Pity there is no VOX to help with digi modes although that won’t interest the majority anyway. 73 Franco

Hi. Yes, just bought one from Moonraker too. I have bought from them several times before. It arrived very quickly by DHL shipping, about $45.00 extra. It does not have PL or an offset for 10 Meter Repeaters, such as my amateur radio equipment have, but they are much more expensive by comparison with that low price for the Titan unit. 😊

I am very limited in my HOA. I wonder if I can use my gutter downspout / zip it the antenna to it and run the coax (via UnUn/Choke) into the basement window where the shack is and get decent reception
@WHNorthcote2 күн бұрын
Moonraker always has a good range of radios either for CB or Amateur radio users. I mostly buy from them when it comes to coaxial and such, Reason for it was I saw them selling at a rally and they were ex military. SO from that point on recognising my Veterans badge they gave me a discount so they have my loyalty with them. As for the radio... Looks nice. 30W on 10 and you are getting over the water shows how good they can be. Even their 2/70cms radio they made was a good all rounder FM with a small form. Sadly no longer sold but was a great radio though similar in size to the Anytone 4M radio. SO yeah, nice radio.
