Hello Walt, thank you for this video. I often use vertical antennas when I am /P but never had the idea with a 4:1 unun. I just ordered an ldg to try. 73 jerry F4HJO

I learned this from a banker: Ask people like her “Why does an HOA have specific rules?” Chances are they can’t tell you why. THIS is the answer: When a land developer gets money from a bank to build an entire development, they get a LOT of money. More money than the bank has to lend. We are talking tens of millions of dollars or more for a larger development. Remember that the developer must also build roads, water and sewer systems, install electrical power poles, comply with many regulations etc etc. Its not just building houses. SO, the bank has to borrow money themselves to lend it to the development co.. The bank has to come up with a sort of “collateral” as it were. And the bank does not want to PAY INTEREST on that money any longer than they have to. They want you to pay for 30 years, but they don’t. The bank knows the sooner that developer sells all those lots the sooner they will be able to pay off THEIR LOAN. So THE BANK writes many of those rules (boiler plate these days) in order to discourage things that may turn snooty buyers away. Over the years it has gotten silly. “You may not leave your garage door open more than 10 minutes” or “Your garbage cans must be kept out of sight from the roadway” Or “temporary parking is allowed in ones driveway for no more than 2 hours, and no over night parking is allowed in that driveway.” The stupid rules go on and on. Among those rules is the requirement to create a board, elect a president, a treasurer and other officers. So the people who typically want those positions are people who think they need to keep YOU in line. But people who love power should never have it… and that is the rub. The bottom line: Once the bank has been paid off, they no longer have any interest in what color your house is, or if your dog barks. They made their profit and the smile about it every day. Once I found this out, at our next meeting I brought this up, made a motion and voted on and passed dissolution of most of the rules. This actually took 2 meetings, but the end result was glorious. The HOA still exists because there are common areas to mow and electric bills to pay for lighting and a few taxes. But the Karens were stripped of their power. And they HATE IT. Some kept at it for a time anyway until someone got the bright idea to get a restraining order. Eventually they all moved away. We had a party… and parked in the street.

Well the first thing is the tower is not insulated above ground so you can't use it as a series of vertical however you can shunt feed it. This is done by taking a climbing up the tower anywhere from 10 to 20 ft and attaching your wire at that point. Then running that wire a quarter wave away from the tower at roughly a 45° angle. At that point where the wire now meets the Earth is your ground point. That would get the other half of your coax you are a fan meter goes in between the center of your coax a large variable capacitor in Ceres and then the wire leading up to the tower. My adjusting the capacitor you adjust a coupling and the slope radiator connected to the tower acts as an electrical shock feed and usually you try to do this at a certain distance that creates 904 degrees but since you can't calculate it you can pretty much guess about 20 feet

this may be a very simple question/ answer.. would using LMR coax help the lack of chokes due to it's properties? i would have to replace my coax if not, as it is cut/installed to exactly the length needed to get to the antenna. thank you for your videos. i am limited to 11m, just trying to do all i can for what i have.

I’ll be taking my license test shortly. However, I already have the radio and I’ve been listening as I’ve studied. And I can tell you, I have no interest in joining the local club. I hear them on the air and online. They’re often homophobic, racist or close minded and the like… not exactly a selling point. And what is sad is this: I’m not a radio expert yet. But listening to them, they are absolutely terrible with computers which I know a ton about. It SHOULD be a fun exchange of two generations helping each other learn cool stuff but it isn’t. It is what it is. It’s the way the world seems to be in this moment in history. Hopefully I’ll meet a few nice ones too. Who knows.

As a 50 year ham and retired two way radio tech, I agree 100% about the difference in power. I run my 891 on 10 watts CW and 20 on SSB. As a field tech, it's hard to explain to a customer that his brand new 100 watt UHF repeater car radio just isn't going to get double the range his old 40 watt car radio did, LIKE THE SALESMAN TOLD HIM HE WOULD...... There are 2 advantages the 891 does have, first with 100 watt capability, you have plenty of overhead to protect the finals. Second, the 891 has 6 meters, which is great for portable operating with an antenna that just is so much smaller. I used to have the SGC SG-2020 that I loved for portable use, but in spite of it's 20 watt rating, it's well known it doesn't do that on 10 meters. Mine only did 10 watts on 10 meters, which was disappointing. I sold the SG-2020 and replaced it with the 891, but I still regret selling the SG-2020..... It was just the most simply rugged transceiver ever.

You could use a drone to fly a tag line with a small fishing sinker attached to it up to the apex of this tower. Once it's where it needs to be, drop the sinker through the braces of the tower. You'll be able to use that tag line to hoist up a sloper or an inverted V. A sloper would be very easy with this tower. One wire as the radiating element and the tower itself as the counter poise. If you use an inverted V, just be sure not to pull the feedpoint up too close to the tower or it'll never tune right.

We have a tall octagonal chimney about 180 feet high formerly as part of a cotton mill which has a lightning rod on it. The council bought it for £1 and has a tulip top. I have mused with the idea of connecting that to my radio. A big signal on Top Band. Near a canal too. I'd prefer it to be a bit more remote than where it is with nearby houses. 210 feet, I just checked. G4GHB.

A bit of simple trigonometry would give you an idea of the height. A protractor, distance out from the base and I forget which, but sin, cosine or tan would give the height. G4GHB.

I just decided to get into this hobby. I started to learn coding and cybersecurity a few years back and quickly learned that there are hundreds of thousands of gatekeeping sad sacks out there that will share their misery with you. Sucks to be them. I'm not at all surprised that HAM radio has these folks. Even the military had a lot of them, even in combat theatre, and we friggin' had to trust each other with our very lives!!

Will that length work with the MFJ-998RT straight to wire nut and no 48:1?? That tuner can use a wire connected directly to it, so not sure if we then have to use 468/freq.
