Cap’n… it’s interesting that you should happen onto the subject of cattle trails. Direction, slope straightness… all topics about which I have some knowledge. Since I was a kid… I’ve walked them. Here are a few thoughts and questions their mere mention evokes: - They are seldom perfectly straight. Even in the middle of a dead flat featureless pasture. If they are made by the cows themselves…. They won’t often be perfectly straight. It seems to me they lack the critical geometric engineering eye for a perfectly straight line. Absent also, is their knowledge that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line…. - Given the choice of a path directly up a steep hill or one that wraps up that hillside… a cow will more likely graze her way around the hill on their way up. Going down, she’ll take the direct route. (All bets are off on which path calves, steers or bulls in love will take.) - If you take the cattle out of a pasture long enough for it to grow over and the paths to disappear from view. The next herd will reestablish the very same paths as before. (Unless you move around way points or place obstacles.) - When two cows meet on the same path, one of them will leave the path. Figuring out which one it will be, is tricky for us… most of the time the cow grazing the path gets the right of way. If neither is grazing and they meet head on, you can see in its eyes the instant that one decides they have to leave the path and walk around. It will avert its eyes and their head turns, guiding them around the other. They have a pecking order that they understand… but, we’re not privy to. - Cows ambling down a path would rather adjust their speed than go around the one which slows down in front of them. Staying on the path is a strong component of the herding instinct. - As far as gaps in the column are concerned… each cow has their own idea of social distancing… even during Covid restrictions, cows walked as close or far apart as they wanted! - If you put an obstacle in the middle of a path a new trail will be established around it. Remove the obstacle and the new trail is immediately abandoned. - Paths rarely T-off. Because cows are longer than they are wide, most cattle trail intersections are forks. - A herd is normally led down a path by a cow. Calves, steers and bulls aren’t leaders of travel. I assume it’s because they lack the discipline to lead efficiently… momma cows are the real power wielders in the herd. And lastly… - There is nothing quite like the feel of mud and manure squishing up between your barefoot toes on a warm summer trip down a cattle trail! Cap’n, that’s way over yonder enough of my rambling along cattle trails… please forgive me for that detour. But, me thinks the farmers will be able to figure out where they want the cattle to go… but, I’ll bet good money that the cows will pick their own path to get there! -

@@CaptainKleeman 🤔Would that be pronounced 'Cowledge'?
@Crewsy2 жыл бұрын
People aren’t that different from cattle Mr. Sassafras. If you live in an area that gets snow like I do and you look at the pathways created through the field at the school they seldom have a straight section more than 10’ long and even then it’s not truly straight. When going to pick up my kids when they were much younger I would intentionally try to create a straight line across the field to see if it would establish a line that would be used at least till the next snowfall. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t. Humans. Go figure. 😂🤣

Nope! We still use them. He had some on that trailer, but with his bigger dozers and new haul truck, it takes more binders, so they all stay in the lowboy pretty much
