I'd really like to express my appreciation for this series, my friend. I'm in college rn and I'm not kidding when I say that I find solace in construction and heavy machinery, among other mechanical things. That is to say, having a full, no BS, unbounded, from-the-ground-up construction project turned into a free watchable series is a huge stress reliever for me. I really hope you do actually financially recover from this because you're doing one hell of a job with the content. Thanks so much for being awesome bro!!

That’s the main reason why I didn’t get a house with neighbors around me. I bought my house 18 years ago and it’s in the middle of the woods in Pennsylvania. No neighbors, no stores, no hospitals. Just peace and quiet enjoying the wilderness. 🇺🇸

I'm actually glad you recorded the neighbor and played it for us. I think he was upset but still handled it well. He mentions the big trucks should not be using the entrance they had been and if they had been using the correct entrance it wouldn't have happened. He does not have to let you fix the problem. He probably doesn't know who you are or maybe he does and would rather have a professional do it. And to those who say he's a "get off my lawn " guy try living in Westchester County NY. I stepped one foot on someones lawn and they sent their dog after me.

That guy on the mini digger is a pro, especially when you see him slide out the levels so accurately.....you are lucky to have that skill level dealing with those slopes. My brother is a digger guy as we like to call him!! It turned out great, it looks amazing, imagine in other seasons what it will look like when there are shrubs and greenery. As for planting....my opinion when I first saw it is that on that first tier (and this depends on what season you will use it the most but I am presuming winter) red twig dogwoods, those vibrant red stems clashing against the white snow it would be amazing. They are so tall after there leaves drop and they leave these amazing red stems that unless ye get 3/4 feet of snow on that level they will always peak through. Love watching the builds....I am in Ireland and we don't celebrate it but Happy Thanksgiving!

I built a 50 foot retaining wall 4 foot tall last summer. I did 80% of the block myself and leveled 75% of the first row myself... so worth it once done, but yes it flies once you get that first row. Hard work! Maybe I missed it, but is the upper wall just sitting on dirt? Also first course needs to be fully, or at least mostly, buried under grade
@steveknights9825Ай бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. What is supporting the bottom of the upper wall from just sliding forward? Maybe the geo mesh? Or just a fingers crossed situation?
@amburn424 күн бұрын
Same thing I was thinking. I thought there was some recommended calculation of buried courses per height of wall, but I might be mistaken; something like for every 8" of wall height, 1" should be buried? That, and the second wall should be laterally offset from the first wall by 2x the first wall's height? Aka - if the first wall is 4ft tall, then there should be 8ft of "flat" ground behind it, before your first course of the second wall. But i'm not geo-engineer and what I'm saying could be flat out wrong, or simply a Mid-Atlantic thing based upon the prevailing types of soil in the region?
@gregharris1966Ай бұрын
So the bottom of the bottom wall has to be below grade but the bottom of the second wall can be 2 feet above grade ? Also no membrane to keep dirt/sand from being washed into gravel. Take a few years but eventually rock drain will become ineffective and wall will be compromised. At what point do you need to have a concrete footer and rebar in retaining walls in this area. 12 feet tall seems too much for compacted gravel.
@amburn424 күн бұрын
I'm neither a geo-engineer or experienced hardscaper, but I was thinking the same thing. However, the team was following plans provided by an engineer, so I'm assuming they accounted for these things? Also, hopefully part of the engineers plans was a soil sample, which determined the soil might be sandy enough to let water through it, so no membrane between drainage rock backfill and soil backfill is necessary? But the on-grade footing for the second half of the wall seems very incorrect to me, based on current knowledge.

@TazControl923 күн бұрын
You're never gna get perfectly manufactured blocks. For masonry projects I always go with a wet substrate like mortar to compensate for those slight disparities between the building units. The concept of the pins to create that offset is great, but if you want to trick the eye and hide those seams/joints, mortar's the way to go. I've never worked with this product, so I'm not sure if you could combine the methods? But hey, more rigidity in a retaining wall couldn't hurt right?
@stoveguy2133Ай бұрын
Always put a 48’ house on a 50’ lot.
@pamelajones6243Ай бұрын
So I watch alot of Perkins Builder Brother videos and, can you not use morter? I'm just asking, idk
@amburn424 күн бұрын
Depending on who you ask, mortar isn't recommended, because you're creating a solid wall, preventing the water from seeping around the blocks in the event of clogs or over saturation, thereby increasing the hydrostatic pressure behind the wall. Yes, the water "should" drain through the gravel drainage backfill, down into the perforated pipe and then downhill of the wall, but that doesn't always work. Primarily, overtime, small grit, dirt, and roots start to clog up drainage pathways behind the wall, and if the wall is mortared, that backup water now has no place to seep out of to relieve the hydrostatic pressure on the wall. Basically, in some opinions, it's "safer" on the wall's structural integrity to allow water to "seep" around each block, in addition to draining down to the perforated pipe as intended. But all of this might depend on the blocks you're using, the composition of the soil, height of the wall, and your climate.
