Spending some time building a shelter for bushcrafting in the woods, fired wooden posts, Rafter and Shakes to tile the roof.

Hello again everybody! As this is a silent video Ill leave some blurb for context. Before I start my log cabin build this autumn I thought id practice some techniques and get a ‘temporary’ shelter up near by for storage / taking breaks in and just for normal filming tasks. I decided to do a framed shelter in order to use some ‘reclaimed’ timber already in the woods and experiment with making shakes (tiles) for the roof.. due to time constraints I only went with 2 over lapping rather than the recommended 3, this shelter doesn’t need to be 100% water tight.. just keep out the majority. I fired the parts of the posts that went in the ground but the wood was already old and the shelter temporary so it was more for ‘demonstration purposes’ really. This is usually done to protect from rotting. The video was filmed over a week, it took me the best part of 3 days to make the shakes alone and I only had half of what I need, yes.. filming does make everything take twice as long haha, Thanks to my mate Chris for the loan of the shave horse and tutorial on making shakes. Ideally they should be overlapping by 3 and have expansion gaps. It would have been nice to complete this shelter but unrealistic with work and needing a weekly video upload but rest assured part 2 will be here in a couple of weeks which will be completing the roof and starting to close in some walls. Thank you for watching friends.. see you all soon!

"Let's Play Simon's Saws!" Looks a fine bit of kit. Always a pleasure to drop by your channel and to watch you whip something up in the great woodlands. I always appreciate a bit of woodcraft coming out in the woods. It makes a better base for survival and, for me, it always made for a cabin to make better memories. VIEWERS: check out the variety of froe work towards the end of this video. You probably won't have seen the like of it on any other channel!

You are stepping the game up with these projects Andy, first this small shelter to protect you and gear from the elements whilst working on your new project, the log cabin. I cannot wait for that. We see a lot in North America, Finland, Russia and so on but little old Blighty. Wow, this will be epic and the envy of lots. Before you start, maybe do a little video on the chosen cabin design and how you managed to secure a spot to build it, finance and so forth. Very interesting journey Andy. Awesome.

As much as I love making cord, or using roots for lashings and bindings I have always used an auger hand drill for drilling holes and pegging things together in the forest. Easy to do, very strong, very satisfying. I have a collection of antique auger drills which I love to use. Great to see someone else doing the same thing. Great videos. Thank you!

Hi Andy, brilliant video so far👍,I’ve been a carpenter for 35 years, not a chippy hahaha, great to see you using natural straight out the ground timber and some old methods,, this is just a TIP, but on you’re very first cross timber ,if you add a cocking strip on top of that by just easing up the bottom of ur first course of shingles , about 1”/ 1/2” the bottom of the second course will slowly but surely set better on the first course!! I’m not picking mate just giving a tip,, great video look forward to the next step,, Andy

Great proof of concept, but.... you need to sink those pegs in as as as you can, about 4-5 inches at least and instances where you can, do all the way through! And also, the shingles need to overlap at least 50-60% and the joints must not line up. That way you won’t have light shining through and it should be water tight! So you essentially need to work out your roof size, and double the amount of tiles you’d need to cover it with no overlap 😊👍🏻

I'll have to watch later as I'm not sitting still right now. But wanted to say, I've come to learn that all the wood you outdoors men use up (dead wood) is good forest management. It cleans up a bit and lessens the amount of debris that would burn in a wild fire. Be back later this afternoon to watch the whole thing over a glass of wine!

Hello, Kent - I'm diggin' your new film style. Compositions are tighter. Good sequence planning, setting up shots. Very, very nice. I also MUCH prefer - from almost all bushcrafters - if they'd go exclusively AMBIENT SOUND. Nice work, indeed. You're developing your story telling and film techniques rapidly. Good exposures. Very nice editing.
