I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great kzbin.infoUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.

Hey Matt, So, after all these years are you happy with your dog holes being on the third board over? I see a lot of build videos that place the dog holes on the second board and they all state "you want them near the front edge". Was your placement a trade-off between dog hole placement and hounds tooth tenon functionality? Are the dog holes working fine that far from the front edge? Thoughts?

The end cap serves a purpose for installing the wagon vice, but why did you make it stretch across the full width of the bench? If you plan on adding the tool rest/ planing stop you have made it more difficult to remove or turn that. And leaving the tops fully separate would surely have been even better in coping with wood movements?
@MattEstlea
@MattEstlea 6 жыл бұрын
Fair point, I just preferred the look of a full length end cap!
@hazembata
@hazembata 4 жыл бұрын
Matt, does the tail vice require an endcap? Could you simply have extended the top to compensate for the lack of endcap and drilled into end grain?

I'm so extremely jealous of you matt, I myself am a novice but aspiring woodworker whose only tools are in an American public school were I share the tools I use with hundreds of kids. who 8 out of every 10 of which are either idiots, don't care about the work and therefore the tools, or are just taking the class for the easy art credit... So the progress on my projects is usually slow going and tend to have more hiccups due to my fellow classmates than due to me. But that's neither here nor there I enjoy your videos and you do beautiful work, I hope to one day be able to do the things you are now able to do.

Wait. Are you saying that a threaded insert is more proper than tapping threads into wood, or is bench crafted recommending a lag bolt? Fantastic bench. It’s fun to see the contrast of your seemingly laid back personality blended into the precision with which you obviously strive for (and achieve). Not to mention the accent - we colonists are suckers for a good accent.

Hey Matt, Just out of curiosity could you tell me the details of the drill guide you showed in this video and what you think of it? Been looking for a decent one for ages - can only find really cheap rubbish ones with too much play to do anything accurate. Cheers

Beautiful work, but, I wonder if you wanted to make this work bench and you did not have access to the tools available at the school would you have been able to make it with say just a drill, a circular saw and a bunch of hand tools like say screw drivers, chisels etc. I am sure a lot of viewers if they had access to the tools and say about an hour on how to use those tools would be able to make something if they have the plans to make it. I would like to see how a skilled wood worker as yourself shows how to do things with the tools the average joe may be lucky to have. Making things with Festools or fine Japanese chisels or having a drill press/table saw etc one would imagine should be easier. Not sure if this can be done in general.

it can be done. it will only take a ton of patience. And you can probably simplify some steps, like using simpler joinery and such. And don't forget, tons and tons of patience and time.

Ooooo that's a costly one! The Benchcrafted hardware can be purchased from here: www.classichandtools.com/acatalog/BenchCrafted.html If you happen to buy them, in the checkout there will be a box asking 'where you heard about us'. If you could put my name in there it would be great! Thank you and best of luck with yours!

Nice job, but 99% of KZbin home-made videos (you are not alone) make the mistake of the background music being too loud compared to the voice-over. Turn up the volume to hear the voice, have to turn it down when it's just music. And thanks for not recording the sound of the drills, etc., I shouldn't have to wear hearing protecting while watching a carpentry video.
