Building a roundabout in Snohomish in five days

This summer, contractor Granite Construction completed built a roundabout at the busy SR 9/Bickford Avenue intersection in Snohomish in just five days! This process normally takes months as most of the time traffic is not completely blocked/detoured away from the work, meaning crews have to work around that.
To accomplish this, we closed SR 9 in Snohomish and crews worked around-the-clock to not only build the roundabout but shift how traffic uses the busy intersection of SR 9 and Bickford Avenue. The project will help traffic flow in a fast-growing area while also decreasing chances for serious collisions.
During the closure crews demolished the old road, added new guardrail and signs, and re-configured the intersection with the roundabout in the middle. Now traffic can continue in any direction without needing to stop for extended periods of times to wait for breaks in traffic.
A big thank you to the city of Snohomish and its residents for their patience during this project!

i’m so happy they did build this so quickly. i almost died in the intersection. i travelled north on rt9 and in traffic decided to turn left into bickford ave. there was an suv in front of me also turning left. they did turn, but in front of an oncoming car which instead of t-boning them, maneuvered around onto my middle lane. i saw that drivers face full of terror. they did miss my car by inches. lucky! i never took that left again until this roundabout was build.

How is it that this roundabout was finished in 5 days, where the one on HWY 305 near Poulsbo has taken almost 2 years and still isn’t done?

Poulsbo is in the middle of nowhere. Sorry about you living there. :(

Poulsbo is great, no need to feel sorry for me. But, I don’t actually live there, but on a nearby island. I visit a lot though and drive through the incomplete roundabout every week or so.

Contracts, if you're engaged on a time + material basis, by an entity with near limitless funds, you kill time till a better paid opportunity comes along.

In my area they are taking 5 months to close the road for a simple culvert replacement!!

Impressive. I saw a driver throw a gum wrapper out her car window. It happened about 1.5 to 2.0 min into the video. The car was dark in color.

Love roundabouts as they lower severity of accidents and the need for a huge amount of land to be wasted to traffic (though this one seems a fail in lowering speeds and this severity of accidents, or land wasted)... You still need to incorporate bioswales/curb cuts/curb bores to mitigate both stormwater runoff and reduce heat island effect as well as add beauty, reduce rainwater pollution, etc. The red cemented wedges are ugly and feels inhospitable to walkability/bikability. Another waste of taxpayer money, again...

Modeling showed this reduces accidents and future maintenance cost (along with operating cost) There are traffic calming devices so speeds are forcibly lowered to safe levels before someone can enter the traffic pattern

@@cybertrk Your remark is contrary to what your roundabout footage is showing. They were going faster than before it was a roundabout. When you make the roundabout smaller and speeds must reduce. Would hate to be a pedestrian/bicyclist trying to navigate that. Seen much better plans for the size out of Europe. (Btw I already acknowledged that roundabouts lowering accident severity, and btw local police would argue about it lowering the number of accidents.)

Where I live, they won't build anymore rotaries, they say it's too expensive. Lol. Washington is a clown show
@b_uppy
@b_uppy 2 жыл бұрын
@@rickspalding3047 It's likely a lie. They can make them a smaller diameter so the drivers go slower and they can use existing lanes of travel in many instances. If you've got dedicated turn lanes in each direction, you can have a roundabout. Are there dedicated turn lanes? ..
@rickspalding3047
@rickspalding3047 2 жыл бұрын
@@b_uppy no dedicated turn lanes, and they are small, the speed limit is 15 mph, I typically go 30mph and many others do as well. Coming from the east coast, I've noticed a massive drop in driving skills on the west coast, people will actually stop at these rotaries with no cars around. I think it's a combo of lack of sun, and original Washingtonians thinking it's a country road while there is congestion everywhere, truly a bizarre state to live in, edit I should say there are two lanes to each rotary though. Ones in Connecticut were much larger
