In 1972 Audemars Piquet made headlines by releasing the first Royal Oak, a steel sports watch priced higher than the watches of its competitors made of precious metals. The designer of the watch Gerald Genta described the Royal Oak as the masterpiece of his career. With looks inspired by vintage diving helmets and a name from ships commissioned by the royal navy the Royal Oak was an instant classic. Over many years of production the Royal oak has undergone some changes with updated calibers, more complications, larger and smaller cases but the original design has always shined through.
This watch was commissioned by a man by the name of Braydon Barrett. Braydon is the owner and CEO of Look Like You Lift, the world's leading online strength coaching service. Braydon is a fascinating guy and I discuss his story a bit in the video but I encourage you to check out all of his social media channels for yourself. Braydon posted on a forum with an image of a Royal Oak Ref. 15510OR.OO.1320OR.04. stating he was interested in having an homage to it built. I reached out to say this would be a perfect build for the channel and I'd be happy to help. I’ve always loved the look of the case and bracelet of these watches and have worked with them before, mainly replicating the watches in the AP Openworked collection with full skeletonization. Braydon and I quickly began to discuss options. Originally we were looking to have a GMT function with this watch, but as the conversation went on we decided that wouldn’t be necessary. We discussed a few more minor things and the build was off and running. All in all Braydon was an absolute pleasure to work with, the build went well, and the watch came out stunning.
This build is powered by the Seiko NH35, though this time around it’s been modded a little bit more to include a black date wheel with white lumed numerals on the dial side as well as a rose gold decorative rotor on the backside. I’ve broken from tradition and used a black Royal Oak style dial with the grande tapisserie pattern with rose gold hour markers. Sitting atop the dial are the rose gold royal oak style hands which needed a good cleaning before they could adorn this watch. Though the main attraction for this build is the beautiful rose gold case with exhibition caseback and the accompanying iconic Royal Oak style bracelet with a twin trigger double deployment clasp. This watch was a joy to put together and the overall result is beautiful. I think well be seeing some similar builds coming up soon
