Great video! My great uncle Jack Smith (3:44 left) and my Grandaddy RB Horton (8:30) are both in this film. Very cool. My grandfather RB was a foreman at Desco, my Great-grandfather Al Smith was chief mechanic and lived right across the street from Desco. Several of my uncles and great-uncles worked there as well as my dad at one point. Really great to watch.

In the 50's & 60's there was one of the largest Gulf Coast shrimp processors called Gulf King in Aransas Pass Texas. All of their boats were white trimmed in Orange and all were from Desco. A lot of my family members were shrimpers and spent many years on those Orange and white boats. One family member went to St. Augustine in the mid 60's to pick up a boat for Gulf King named the "Southern Joy". In the late 60's a hurricane named Celia came directly into Aransas Pass and literally sunk nearly all the boats in Conn Brown Harbor. I do not believe the shrimping industry ever recovered after that storm.

The Bold Venture was built for Henry Word Humphreys. Other vessels he owned were the "Miss Eva" named for his mother, Eva Mizell Henry Humphreys: "Miss Carrie" named for his mother-in-law, Carrie Hobein, "Little Man" named for best friend, Noble Hardee; "Wayde Klien" named for a grandson; "Naughty Lady", "Bold Venture", and the "Seafarer". Henry began shrimping in Morgan City, LA, and docked his boats at the JR Hardee Shrimp Company. In 1950, Henry moved his operations to Brownsville, TX at the Shrimp Basin and docked his boats at the JR Hardee Shrimp Company located next to Sea Garden Sales owned by Will Love Hardee. All of the individuals mentioned here had their roots in Fernandina Beach, FL. John Hardee's wife, Rosemary "Rose", was Henry's sister. All the Hardees and the Humphreys grew up in Fernandina Beach, FL.

Worked trawlers in south Carolina for about two years I'm pretty sure that one out of Shem Creek South Carolina was a desco we took it to Cape Canaveral from Shem Creek to rock shrimp 24 hour run a tropical depression started about 4 or 5 days later we fished 18 to 20 foot seas for maybe 6 hours in a 65 foot trawler she held out good I remember being a child at Folly Beach South Carolina and seeing 2 or 3 men building a boat next to the Folly river he called us over and showed us the keel ribs and logs set to roll the boat into the Folly River when she was finish he was a Greek man named Sirus he built double planked 60 foot or so trawlers he probably built half the trawlers around Charleston sc in the 1950 and 1960 Greek boats were some of the the first 65 foot trawler I worked on was built by Sirus
