That is an awesome little subwoofer. I liked the comparison clips with and without it; they really showed that a good subwoofer can add to the music even if you don't want to rattle the walls. Some people think subwoofers are just for specific types of bass heavy music or people that like to listen really loud; this one fills in the music so well.

Very fond of this speaker design and execution. I have built a dozen or so speakers with the 5.25" version of this driver and I have never been able to get the ported versions to work as well as the PR designs. I've tried round ports, slotted ports, and flared round ports. I get port noise, or early distortion, or just less output. I suspect there is a very good sweet spot for the ported designs, but they are hard to find and by the time you discovery you have an issue, it's pretty much too late to do anything about it except start over. You may have to play around a bit with weighting the PRs, but that's pretty easy to do and the results are consistently good! Thanks for sharing this fine piece of work!

Had same issues with ported designs for the W5, all my builds were a failure unable to get a correct port resonance frequency implied by WinISD. Finally I bought a Dayton Audio DAT V3 to measure the drivers and guess what - all advertised specs where all over the place in my samples. If you get a spec for a Fs of 45 HZ and in reality you measure 59-65 HZ for the production samples you have a problem, and no there was not any improvement after burning in.
@SoundBlab

Yeah, these do require some long ports for a small enclosure, but it can be done without port noise. This one does not actually produce much port noise at all. Excited to see what the PR version will do. Stay tuned!

I have two W6-1721 I snagged for 50$ each in Spain with only a nail scratch on the surround. The motor is impressive since it's an underhung midbass driver. It's not even considered a woofer, but with the 29 liter enclosure in a bookshelf format and 75mm port, which is not recommended for their performance, they still manage to impress me with the low notes. Tang Band produces incredible speakers. If anyone wants to build a banging bookshelf speaker, you could even place the W6-1139SIF as the woofer and a full-range speaker like a BMR for the upper frequencies.
@Randommmmm204
@Randommmmm204 3 жыл бұрын
Only experience I've had with Tang Band is the Logitech Z2300 subwoofer, basically a rebranded Tang Band 8 inch (can't remember the exact model). In it's original box with it's original amp, it was very loud at about 45Hz, but that's everything it had going for it. Box was too small to go any lower and the amp was horrible. I made a custom box, used a Dayton plate amp and it actually performed very well, especially considering I paid like $50 for it. It could go as low as 28Hz with quite a bit of authority, and the quality itself was much better. I used it for a party though and I blew it up, which is actually impressive because that sub is tough. I've seen people plug them straight into wall outlets and they'd last for like a minute or 2. I don't know why people hate on that sub so much, the driver is actually really good. It's the amp and box design that suck. Not the box quality though because it was actually built really tough. They used good glue, nice quality wood and bracing which is unusual in such a cheap sub.

I noticed when you built your "Dynamites" You had mentioned that you didn't use brad nails because you intended to round the corners, however on this build you did. Did it cause any issues when you rounded the corners? Any damage to the bit? I love the rounded corners and would like to do the same thing.
@SoundBlab
@SoundBlab 2 жыл бұрын
I did not have trouble with the bit getting damaged, however you will need to punch the nails back into the wood a bit afterwards and use a good quality wood filler to fill the holes. Over time the wood filler can also push out as the wood moves. This creates small but visible bumps on the surface of the paint. Best is to not use nails at all if you can.
@fredgeitner713
@fredgeitner713 2 жыл бұрын

nice, but looking at the price list, you probably spent $300 on that, you can buy a Magnat sub with that, that i think is nicer. I looked into building some bookshelf speakers, but buying some ready made ones (Magnat Monitor Supreme 102) was gonna cost about the same, so i did. I am building my own amp though.

The wood panel with holes inside is a brace to help reduce cabinet resonance or vibration. You need the holes to so that air can move inside the entire volume of the cabinet.
@birumutiara2169
@birumutiara2169 3 жыл бұрын
@@SoundBlab to "reduce resonance" are you sure not the opposite, to enhance resonance? like brace inside acoustic guitar. i thought brace is to enhance resonance so it can sound louder.. wow all this time i was so wrong thank you vr much sir now you have me as a new subscriber
@SoundBlab
@SoundBlab 3 жыл бұрын
The brace is glued to the inside of the side, top and bottom panels to refuce their vibration and avoid the panels from causing to much resonance. Speaker enclosures perform best when we can have a very ‘dead’ cabinet and only the speaker drivers are doing the work since cabinet vibrations can influence the sound negatively. A guitar is different because it relies on the cabinet to help produce the sound. The braces inside the guitar is there to tune that sound.

Nice Build! I have 2 w6 1139 SG at home and maybe I build one of your 2 designs (Passive Membrane or BR) for each driver Today I use each w6 with a 8 Inch PR in small box, but it needs a better rebuild.. At 14:32 it looks like your AUX Port isn't sealed at the end and maybe cause some problems with airflow generated noises. While listening to the sound demo at the end, I would like to know if you use the full range signal for your stereo speakers when the subwoofer was off or did you use a highpass/speaker protection crossover for them? I appreciate your work and looking forward to the next part.
