Building a Spring Box in Florissant, Colorado: Innovative Water Solution-Dry Well, Collection Well

This week we tackled a unique challenge in Florissant, Colorado, by building a spring box to capture groundwater instead of drilling a traditional well.
When the high water table caused the drill rig pad to collapse, preventing the well company from having a stable area from which to drill a traditional well, we had to pivot to an alternative solution. With special approval from the state, and oversight by Black Mpuntain Drilling, we installed a spring box using 3’ tall, 6 1/2’ inside diameter concrete rings, each with multiple 2-inch holes for water collection.
In this video, you’ll watch our team stack these rings 12 feet deep, wrap them in landscape fabric and geo mat, and then fill them with layers of rock for natural filtration. The well company installed a perforated steel casing down the center, and will install a pump to ensure a reliable water supply for the house.
Next step will be to backfill with a layer of clay, sealing the system from surface water/contamination and then covering with 5-6 additional feet of native soil, burying the entire structure 12 feet underground.
