Building a Square Off Grid Log Cabin| Lifting Heavy Logs | Squirrel Confit for Lunch

My Self Reliance

Күн бұрын

Lifting heavy hemlock timbers is difficult so I rig up a cable winch system to help raise them into place on the small square log cabin I'm building for a workshop.
Over the open fire, I cook grouse, pheasant and squirrel, slow cooked in a cast iron fire in duck fat.

When I was a kid in the Finger Lakes region of New York, back in the 1960's, our family dog ran free with all the other dogs in the neighborhood. There was a gang of kids and a gang of dogs. Each kid and dog played all day; swam laid in the sun, ate food off the ground and made sure they were home for dinner each evening, only to come out again after a good breakfast each morning. and start the day all over again. Our dogs ran in the fields, brought home rabbits to eat in the front yard. They swam in the lake and creek. They chased away missionaries and salesmen. They had a charmed life, as we ourselves did. Today I am sitting on my couch watching the neighbor go by with her german shepherd on a flashy plastic bejeweled leash, and a doggie raincoat. My own dog wont go out because it is raining and she is asleep on a pillow by the fire. All well and good but it gives me GREAT joy to see the truly charmed life that Cali has. l'm sure that if my own dog could watch your channel she would be waxing eloquent about her master, how she used to run free in the woods, sleep on the ground, climb the highest trees and go home only for dinner, half frozen and a muddy mess and now look at her, fat and sassy, sitting on the couch watching other people walk their dogs.

My childhood was just as you described. It was amazing. My mom actually wrote a series of children's books based the Adventures of Dora Belle Lee, our beloved "Irish Cart Hound". She was the ringleader of the local gang if dogs. My Dad determined the breed from a picture he saw in National Geographic of an Irishman and his dog sitting on a old horsedrawn cart but, she was actually a border collie mix we got from the local pound. Those were wonderful days.

But we seem to get caught in the rat race. So i began paying my bills off, got out of debt & never looked back. So glad i did that. Started saving money & gonna buy a place in country & not owe anyone. Its so freeing not to owe ppl. I wish you many blessings & Jehovah Gods blessing on you, fam & in your storehouse.

Sweet Cali looks to keep herself entertained. It's great to have a best friend to spend time with! I have learned how to use some more of my father's tools. He's 84 and doesn't use them much anymore. I know from watching you that I have to take care of them. I'm greatful for everything I learned growing up on the farm. I was youngest so I always got stuck cleaning the small game. As I got older they taught me to clean bigger game. I appreciate you showing me such great things! There is so much more to life people don't appreciate. Can't miss what they never had I guess! Be safe and blessings to you! ✌🙏💪

I also grew up on a farm - kids raised in cities and towns have no idea what they have missed, besides learning that hard work will not kill you, but gives you a sense of pride in producing your own food and that of your animals. I miss those halcyon days of boyhood, now at 77.

This all comes with massive love, respect and admiration James, I hope it's received as such. If I might offer some constructive criticism. The flexibility of those two trees you used for the hoist are making you expend a lot more energy than you need to. Every time you lift a log you're first having to take up the slack from their flexing. It might be worth using two much larger trees as anchor points. Also, a block and tackle would cut the weight of the log considerably. At the moment you're lifting the same weight, just pulling down instead of up. Alternatively, you could use your atv to lift the log instead.

I really love the use of solid timber to build a permanent shelter . Insulation value per inch of thickness is equal to fiberglass , the inner and outer wall surfaces are finished and paint isn't required . Perhaps a mopping of Danish Oil for long term stability would be nice . I , and I'm sure you too , laughed at the lifting set up and the waste of time that became . As small as these timbers are , you are quite man enough to muscle them into place by a little leverage and logic . Looking forward to completion , this is a great idea . Long term stats should be interesting .

Oh I remember them days when you (Dad) would play lifting logs and me I'd be bored , then I found an aggravating squirrel that was constantly annoying hell out of me till you went and shot it - no more squeaking and annoying me and for lunch we enjoyed a morsel together. Them were the days and all them leaves lying about made a cool bed for me to lie on - where are they all now I ask myself as today more drift down and clutter the landscape, making it difficult for me to remember where I left my toys. Cheers folks and cheers Dad for reminding me and them out there what life was all about. Stay safe !!

Elizabeth says, Great job, Shawn! It is my opinion that the 224 thumbs-down, are folks who wear a mask without asking why, and they don't think for themselves, but judge and make choices and decisions throughout their lives based on how they "feel", based upon their "emotions" at the time! They are folks who could never live your independent, sovereign, God-given, self-reliant lifestyle because they listen to their failures speak to them, and are convinced by the voice of inexperience. I can't prove this, but it is my assertion. Just my opinion.

Another fantastic video Shawn. Its cool to see you using different methods of log building. Speaks to the fact that youre not afraid to try new things. I like this one. It seems to be an easier way to build and appears ro be faster. I also like the chamfer detail you are putting on the edges. Is this to allow for chinking?

What about the distance between the cabin and the pond? Could you explain a little more regarding the layout of the homestead? Sooo many questions , thanks for the videos btw .

Hi Shawn, I'm no carpentry expert, but it would be a lot easier pounding those spikes by hand if you pre-drilled 6" deep holes first. It would save you from having to pound through so much solid wood.

Warming the nails and coating them with beeswax might help if he doesn't want to drill pilot holes.I was wondering if the wood was going to start cracking if he didn't drill pilot holes. I guess it will depend on how dry the wood is presently and if it shrinks or warps in the future.

@@gunners4129 it's not so much the effort or time, it's the wear and tear on the body. Pounding those nails, especially with the single arm hammer, takes its toll on the elbow and shoulder. Drilling pilot holes might take more time, but it's probably less abusive to the body.

I've noticed they've increased about tenfold in the last couple months or so. I think it's a YT thing, not the content creators. There was a survey popped up, and I gave them a 2, but there was no place to explain why. I had a 47 minute infomercial one I was forced to skip. Trying to push us to the subscription, I guess.

There is a way to get rid of them on any video if you're using a phone to watch. Let the video play a few seconds, then run the red line at the bottom all the way to the end. Then turn phone up the other way and see the circle with the arrow. Click again and no ads. Turn it back to full screen😊

@@deborahdanhauer8525 agreed. That and they don't really compensate the content creators fairly for quality content. Throw into that mix the fact that they often demonitise creators for tile subject or content that maybe interesting but not mainstream "but" still stick adds on it taking the money in a lot of instances. I like to let adds run to some extent to enable creators like Shawn to have income but KZbin is beginning to try my patience somewhat!

that workshop would suit me fine, you don't need a giant shop to turn out stuff, you need a place to keep your tools in order and a bench to work on. I started out with a 124 square foot shed built a motorcycle in it and I had 4 tool boxes, welding rigs, bench and no room, still made it work, now I moved the GP motorcycle into my 265 foot bedroom.
