I know this was a lot of work, but it was really fun to watch!! Aren't you glad you bought that excavator??!! Great job, Adam!! You know, when I watched you walking right beside your little boy with your arm down & your hand out & between him & that rock, I thought about God's arm down & His hand out, protecting us from "that rock"!! God bless you and your family. Love these videos!! ✨️👍❤️

Suggestion: spread a mix of wild flower seeds above and in the rock wall. Where they grow they will suppress a lot of the weeds you don't want.

Adam… I have a long overdue project that is very similar to that. The west side of my house has a slope that has eroded away. I’ve been gathering stones for years to fix it. Initially I was going to build a stacked rock wall… but have settled on a rock veneered slope like yours. My wife has been the hold up because she says, “I just can’t picture it.” Thanks to you… I can show her what it will look like! Thanks bud… I’ll show her your vid right now!

I think I would turn the bottom row of rocks so that a continuous flat face is presented to make a line. Then a lawn tractor can run beside it a whole lot quicker and easier than dodging around all the jut outs. Really liking this garage build.

Having a machine would make my life SO much easier!!! It took me 15 years to collect enough stones and boulders to have enough to do all I wanted to do...a few here, few there...from softball size up to as big as I could lift. Somewhere in the range of 15-20 tons...all done with my aching back!

That rock retaining wall will blend in over time and give you years of satisfaction. Back in the 1970s my brother and I built a rough retaining wall out of rocks unearthed while digging the cellar hole at the family lake cottage. Fifty years on, it looks like it is a natural part of the site.

I really like the look of native rocks over having something else being brought in. That wall is looking great. To keep weeds at bay, look for a product called "ground zero" or "ground clear" and it works for an entire season.

To minimise extra Erosion, find yourself a (LARGE) Flat peice of Shale or Stone to place under the Evacuation Pipe so drainwater will slow down "softer". And possibly place a Wire Mesh Screen (with a Hose Clamp) to prevent Cridders, but still cleanable for Leaf Debris...
@jonathanheath8142 жыл бұрын
Cool project Adam. You saved a huge amount of money, slope issues, and labour by not excavating into the slope and building a vertical retaining wall. What you did also looks good and meant you could do it. Respect!
@brucebello20492 жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, great start, if you don’t mind could I suggest you consider using a wildflower mix in the wall, it would get you ahead of the weeds and look fantastic between the stones. Over here in the UK our farmers were paid to plant wildlife supporting mix’s and the county side has never looked better. Take care

It's gonna look good man. I did exactly the same thing along a spot of my driveway that had to be built up to go through a low spot. The only thing I hate is the rocks seem to attract timber rattlesnakes. I bet I could go down there now and see one. I keep it sprayed with roundup to kill any weeds that come up. Other than the rattlesnakes everything is spot on for me

Adam, you are being modest about operating the excavator. You are really good on all your machinery. You are very skilled in backing your trailer. Backing a short tongued trailer is not easy.
@nickmastroianni55572 жыл бұрын
You might want to shovel in some soil to fill in the gaps between the rocks and use a leafblower to clean it up afterwards. . That should slow erosion and help keep out the critters. Then, plant some ground cover or wildflowers or grass to hold the soil in place and prevent weed growth. Another possibility might be to fill in with #2 stone.

I found your from Dig, Drive, DYI. You have a great channel. Quick question which part of PA are you in? I just bought 15 acres in Berks county. Talk about stone and hills. Keep up the great work and thank you for providing such a wholesome and natural channel to watch.

I really enjoy your videos!! The rock wall is looking great!! Thanks for sharing!! Have you considered the freeze/thaw issues with the PVC? The reason I am asking is because I had some of my downspouts routed via underground PVC and it didn't work out very well for me. The PVC filled with ice, therefore, plugging the drain and the water had nowhere to go but out the connection between the downspout and the PVC. It also broke my PVC elbow at the bottom of the downspout. The lines that I ran using perforated corrugated PE and bedded in sand never plugs with ice. It always drains no matter the freeze/thaw cycles here in eastern Iowa. God bless y'all!

Good you used sand around the pipe. I think I would have put a couple inches of sand in the bottom of the trench before laying the pipe as a consistent bottom cushion too. Grass and weeds in it is no matter. I usually get my sand from the side of the road where it builds up from the winter road sanding… why buy it if the town is going to leave a bunch that ends up along my property anyway!? With regard to the geotextile, you may be fine, or you may wish you had it behind those boulders later. I’d value the filtration/separation function of the geotextile for preventing erosion of the underlying soil over weed blocking. Water and gravity are powerful forces with respect to soil erosion and deposition. There is a boulder slope/wall like that at my sister’s house and it has issues with soil washing through that you wouldn’t expect.

The stone wall is coming out cool Adam! - Any way to add some steps down the stone wall near the Garage, to run down to the pond, or run to the Porch? Seems like it would be handy to add into the wall design. And could be a good test for your excavator skills! could be railroad ties, of flat topped rocks, or wood from the property cut on the mill!!!
@victorsummers22832 жыл бұрын
You might consider planting things (natives) in between the rocks, like flowering bushes?

I’ve been a mechanic on heavy equipment for years, familiar with operating dozers and digger. I bought my Deere 35G excavator last year, and there’s just no substitute for seat time. Rent one for two days, and you’ll be a semi-competent operator by the time you’re ready to return it. From then on you’ll be able to rent a machine and REALLY get some work done.

Rather than putting down Geomat, plant deep rooted native plant seed under the borders. Work with a local native plant nursery for species that will work well in you location. Those plants will keep the weeds down, they will keep coming back year after year, and the deep roots will help absorb stormwater runoff.
