Those videos of the wood drying and seasoning are going to be boring. DIY one off builders are well advised to use old wood, architectural salvage or old solid wood furniture from the salvation army is good. That way it's really well seasoned. Old pianos and organs can also be good, church pews and lecterns too, they give that real holy tone....seriously, any old wood besides white pine or oak is worth trying.

Just a little tip for future builds. When making new holes for screws through a finish, run the drill bit in reverse. This causes an easy and slow cut because the bit will act more like a reamer and the blades will be pushing away and this will keep the blades from grabbing the finish and pulling up causing chipping. Once into the wood set drill for normal cutting/drilling direction. Works also for opening holes for tuners and/or tuner bushings with the exception of not setting drill to cut at any time. Just using bit as a reamer. Harbor freight sells a tapered reamer for about $4 and does a decent job. Congrats and nice build !

I swear, that is the best guitar I have ever come across. Looks fabulous, sounds world class, and I imagine that it plays like a dream. As a kid, back in 69/70 I had no money, so I made a "guitar". Sounded like it had wooden strings... The best it ever sounded was crackling on a bonfire... Please keep the good work coming. Can't wait for the "tones", so that's where I'm headed right now...

For the love of god, please let this come into existence. Literally every one of his builds is a masterpiece, with almost perfect specs. And they just tend to look beautiful naturally. I've fallen in love with each one of his builds, especially his signature guitar (not built by him) but still such a piece of art that one is and perfectly spec'd out too!

I’ve been blown away by this channel. I don’t even play guitar very much! Darrell has an enthusiasm for his craft & a style of presentation that I’ve gravitated towards since I started to check out guitars on KZbin. His style is represented in the choices he makes in presenting what he does to his audience. It even is reflected in the instrumental choices he makes for the videos. Braun is not the best guitar player I’ve ever seen on KZbin, but he certainly the one with the best taste in the instrumentals that are at the core of his videos. He never lets you forget that building a guitar is done in service of its eventual player, but that building a guitar is an art form onto itself. I’ve found that watching. Darrell Build a guitar is one of the most relaxing things I’ve found on KZbin. That probably speaks more to my weirdness than his presentation, but it’s a useful function for these videos to serve. I’m a bass player, and I’d like to see Darrell tackle a build of a cross-brand bass. Hopefully that will eventually come to pass. I’m pretty much hooked. I hope that we are able to watch Darrel do his thing for years to come. I hope that KZbin realizes that he’s a treasure.

My first "tele style" guitar had 3 Strat single coil pups and a 5 way sw. Everybody loved it. It was sold 3 days after it was completed. I built 2 more after that, and they both sold fast. The coolest one was made on a one pc Cedar body. Best tone I ever heard.

I liked the tele knobs a lot. The zebrawood is a great choice, but the grain doesn’t really match the body wood. I imagine that finding something like that is either very expensive or not available. Same thing with the pickups. I should explain that I’m somewhat confused compulsive about matching things. I make no apologies!:). The tele knobs would have set off the other chrome touches on the finished product.

Ha! I love the love for the material. It really hurts to hurt the body of your beloved guitar. You can check as much as you like before drilling - you are never sure you‘re doing the right thing. And when it‘s done, of course you‘re happy, but you always forget at full speed - until the next hurting is necessary... 😄

Another note , I have a Flying V made by amp builder Mike Morin. The body is hand built with a Warmouth neck. Bird's eye maple and ebony fingerboard. It has a Floyd Rose so a locking nut is installed. The neck is over 30 years old and is as straight as day one. Frets are still in good shape. Great stuff.

Great build, but my best advice would be to keep your switch and pickup configuration the standard, but install a Gilmour mod which is a small switch that independently activates the neck pickup so you can run the neck and bridge or all 3 if you want. It’s a cheap mod and I do it on my strat copies and any that I can hotrod for my friends

rohadt Anyad Was going to say that exact same thing! Sounds good as it is, but with the Gilmour mod you keep ALL the 'standard' options PLUS you can get neck n bridge or even all 3 at the same time. I always do it to Strat style git boxes and the push/pull pot makes it totally invisible and reversible.
@rohadtanyad8908
@rohadtanyad8908 6 жыл бұрын
akc5150 akc, a push pull pot to me is horrible. especially with strat style knobs, pulling up is a chore. a push push knob is much better. you just tap it. i don't know why everyone installs push pull, it makes no sense to me.
@akc5150
@akc5150 6 жыл бұрын
rohadt Anyad I agree..... to a certain extent. With a push/pull at least you have an instant visual cue as to where you are set... With push/push it's easier to get it wrong from time to time......Unless there are push/push pots that pop up?

That's a tough poll. I'm torn between the Chrome tele and the zebrawood. the strat knobs just look out of place for that build. The chome is good for color balance across the look of the guitar but the Zebrawood has this uniformity to the appearance that makes it pop. it's a beautiful guitar though. and that "tele" mode has a nice sound to it.

Turned out pretty cool, Darrel! I think the best part of this match-up may be the combination of body contours - it keeps the Strat nice belly and shoulder contours, but the flat leg base so it doesn't tend to slide off like a Strat. That's very convenient and something quite overlooked, but it makes a difference when playing sit down when using Superstrats with that kind of contouring.

Wanted to thank you for your Strat/Tele build you did in KZbin. Not only is it one of the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen, you showing the equipment to build us such an encouragement. Soldering is not my strong suit, so learning of wiring set ups that are solderless makes the world of difference to folks like me. I assume the writing diagram of what plugs where is user friendly by looks of it. If love to see a video of how you do complete setups someday. Thank you again. I simply LOVE your guitar & your videos as well. From a super fan in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Never give up! Especially not when your fingers hurt and hurt more (but learn the right technique right from the start!). Just keep going because the first year is the toughest. The time following will only bring you satisfaction you've never known. To my humble opinion a guitar is one of the few instruments that can make your heart speak every language possible. The only thing a guitar wants from you to be loyal is that you practice over and over again. If you know how loyal a dog can be, you know what I mean.

I'm back. And the dog is always the bonus. I finally got the strength to get another dog. He's in my latest videos on my journey into learning leads. He sits on the back of couch like a cat. Black Pomeranian. He's soooooooooo hyper and loud. Loves to bark. Annie rip the toy poodle was sweet and quiet. Mellow. She was 10 though when she passed March last year. Anyway I hope she is here with us somehow. That's the only way I cope. Joda was a gift from family friend. I wasn't really sure but hes here and I'm trying to give him best life. Haha. Anyway thanks again man. I am stuck on what to get next. Guitar the Sterling JP150 or a nice gigboard headrush ...Choices. Lol. Maybe build one??? Thanks man.

I was inspired by the strat build you did before this guitar and made my own this year using the obsidian wire strat blender kit and a warmoth neck and body. I ran into the same problems you did in this video with fitting the electronics in the body as well as the pick guard not lining up with the neck (although I knew that would happen because I chose to get the body routed for a Tele style neck.) These were super easy fixes though and it was so rewarding plugging it in and playing after putting all of my carefully chosen pieces together. It’s also so worth it to choose the exact look with the wood and finish and hardware parts of your instrument that makes you want to pick it up every time you see it.

Also, I love the normal black Fender strat knobs. It just looks clean that way.

One thing I learned from Ben at Crimson Guitars is the neck pocket should be rather tight when fitting mating the neck. This prevents any movement of the neck and prevents throwing off intonation. Seems the neck went in a bit loose on this axe (didn't hear creaking). You can add a bit of thin veneer to help tighten it up. Still a gorgeous guitar!

I love it, the tele body to me is much nicer than the strat body. I don’t like the upper horn on strats, so the tele strat hybrid give the best strat option in my opinion. Look fantastic. Love the channel, you cover it all, great playing, great builds, great reviews.
