Wish you’d do a 2/3 week survival challenge where you’d build a bit of a base camp with shelter, fire, do a bit of fishing, maybe some mud crab hunting as well, like a 2 hour video of pure goodness! Would be sick!

Campfires are strictly prohibited during droughts where I live. We'd still go camping, but without a campfire it could be a total shit show. We dug a body-sized trench about 1-2 feet deep. Instead of the A-frame, we put sticks flat over the hole and then covered those sticks with dirt. We left one side open so you could climb in. Then to make it water proof we put a tarp over the mound, and then covered that with debris so the tarp wouldn't move. It ended up similar to this, but aside from being claustrophobic it was MUCH more comfortable than sleeping on the ground. We didn't even axe anything, just broke sticks 1-2 inches in diameter over a rock, used part of a stick to dig the hole. Ahhh, memories!

In Japan, on Kyushu island, about 1h driving from Kagoshima, is a place by the beach where hot springs run close to the surface and heat up the sand. There is a spa there, where they burry guests like that. I had a glorious nap. Warmth under my back and the sand on top was like a heavy blanket. Impossible to stand for longer than 15-20 min though, because the sand get's so hot.

Next time try digging a long hole, throw a bed of rocks in there and build a long fire on top of the rocks. When it's time for bed, bury the stones in half a foot of sand and put a tarp over it. It should be a proper warm night's sleep.

I've done something similar when my idiot friend brought me out to Big Sur and we got caught in the rain. Found an overhang and made a fire, which took hours to get to a decent size since everything was wet. Went and got some big river rocks from the top of the bank - you don't want the soaked ones since they can explode. Heated them up by the fire, buried them in a line under another overhang. Slept there just in my regular clothes. It was miserable, but the hot rocks helped a lot. If we'd had time to build a shelter, that would have been nicer, but we arrived well after dark and stupidly had no flashlight, and I only had a folding pocket knife. That was the last time I listened to anyone about the weather or went into the woods without a big ass fixed blade or a hatchet.

Did something like this as a kid, hitch hiking up highway one in northern California. Got stuck out in heavy rain somewhere north of San Francisco and sheltered in a shallow cave, in a road cut. I managed to pack in dirt and gravel around me until there was just enough room at the entrance for breathing air, and stayed relatively warm all night. I wasn't exactly comfortable, but I didn't get hypothermic either. I learned to always carry cold/wet weather gear, regardless of the season, after that!

I laughed when you said "here she comes, mother nature is going to open her legs and piss on us" I heard a Buddhist the other day explain that rain is a high wave instead of a wave that rolls in from the ocean and crashes over itsellf onto the beach, this wave rolls right into the country before it crashes down on top of us. The clouds are big waves.

I've gotten stuck out in the pouring rain a couple of times at my shelter. I have been crammed with my backpack and tools under just a military poncho before. I did have a fire both times and it was pretty warm because I have been picking up pieces of coal that I find on my way to my fort. I still have a lot left to do to make my fort waterproof so I just throw my military poncho in my bag just in case, plus I've been putting trash bags in there so that I can make a larger dry area. I have been building my fort all winter now and there's still a lot left to do but I am kind of old so I have to take a lot of breaks. Something I have found is that it's much easier to cut big branches with a folding saw rather than an axe but I always carry both since it's obviously easier to split logs with an axe. It adds weight to carry both but I think it's worthwhile. I also carry a small set of whittling knives but part of the reason I carry those is so that I can do something easier during those times that I just have to take a rest from major building.

Hey brother. Never blow hot hair into your hands to warm them up. The moisture will turn cold and it's counter productive. Tuck your hands either into your armpits or in the crevices of your legs next to your twig & berries LOL. It's the warmest part of your body externally. Hope the info helps, I learned it from my dad when I was 11 (he was a EMT for 20yrs).
