I have one of those racks. If you add a rear support the goes from the swinging arm under the rear of the rack, it wouldn't rock and be more stable.
@Mrandmrsadventure
@Mrandmrsadventure 3 жыл бұрын
Cool! Did you build one too? There is a steel spine that extends about 4 inches under the top swing arm 2 inch adapter. This is something we built near the end of the episode so that it would prevent the sag on the carrier while in locked position. So far it's been working great! If any issue at all, it's the extra play/twist within the adapter that leaves the bike leaning a bit heavy in towards the rear of the bike when loaded. When driving and the arm is locked, there are no instability issues.

Thank you Chad! I love the cameos from the people you love in your videos 🤗 Drew, since there’s more space between the bike and doors than you expected, how about attaching storage boxes to the back doors? Hey guys, great job! One proposal for next "carrier-service" - to prevent wobbling (see minutes 18.30, 18.37, 20.55), you could weld another 2" support arm close to the pivot point rectangular to the swing arm and connect its end with your aluminum "ladder". This will support the back tire of your motorcycle and will prevent the whole construction from wearing out soon. Good luck!

you should have placed the two long swing arms side by side and not on top of each other. It causes friction/drag the length of the arms when you swing back to position due to the load of the bike. Side by side would only need a horizontal support plate at the hitch end where the two arms meet to help with the swing armload. That's where you can also place the locking pin. having used rectangular than square tubing will provide better support and less flex/bending due to load. You guys did great doing the R&D and making it work.

added to your invention , 2 each m/c streaps from the outside of the m/c support to the ladder to help hold he m/c in place, the outside straps will take more support over the bumps on the road instead of the way ou have it set up. i built a harbor freight carrier bigger in length . stock dimension were 50"wide, x 21"long, now its 50"wide x 40" long. it carrys 2 250# boxes on the rear, with support eye bolts in the be. i strap the outside of the carrier, over the tailgate into the eye bolt, you can use eye bolts or klits mounted on top of the van or anchors and for support?
@Mrandmrsadventure

💯 ❤️ to U 2.... Suggestion for under Support... add a side jack (or under jack) at the end of swing arm, for sturdiness when arm with bike is extended!
@Mrandmrsadventure
@Mrandmrsadventure 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! 😘 We have thought about putting a tongue wheel on it for when it's extended. We realized as long at it holds properly and can be swung into locked position there is no reason to have more support. We never intend to move the vehicle while it's extended.

Might want to add a few more things to the wrack build, like a bearing on the swing bolt, and a second hitch on the bike wrack to the swing arm. And that should make it more stable. and if you want to get tricky, you could reposition the bike mount so that the bike is more centered to the van.

Hey Drew, pleased i found you guys tonight- a fellow kitesurfer entering vanlife. I've also been wanting to change from the big GS1200A to your bike (going 2-stroke is to big a jump!) - and not sure my sprinter 170 build weight is going to handle it (not planning to go dually) so wondering if you could help me by estimating how much the swing arm and bike added? And was this after your 8550lbs (3850kg)? Thanks a lot in advance!

I'll never forget when I (well I almost forgot until this video) was 15 and stole my dads CB750F and took it for a joyride! I clobbered something and it cracked the engine case, the metal engine guard was in the mail and hadn't arrived yet 😆

LOL. That's a good story. I bet it wasn't as funny when it was happening.

@@Mrandmrsadventure my sore ankle and my dad and I were cool, it was my straight laced Canadian mum that got her panties in a bunch 😯 Drew, I like that extra support on the passenger side of the swing arm 👏

I was thinking of doing the same on our van but I have a few questions. What’s the weight of your bike, carrier and swing arm? And what’s the tongue weight of your hitch? Have you done any mods to strengthen the hitch? I’m super excited to see your future videos to include trips on the bike. Too bad you didn’t have the bike when in the Bay Area. You could’ve took a trip to Metcalf and Hollister Hills. If you come back, maybe you can check them out.

We are really glad we did this! Our bike is 290lbs, but with a few extras and fuel my guess is it's closer to 340lbs now. Our Sprinter is a 2500 (dually) the hitch weigh is rated at 750lbs so there is no need to change the hitch design. Just wait till we get back to the mountains and coast 😊🏍💨

Question? Is that a semi rusting bar on the back of your van? I'm sure you treated it. I'm just jumping ahead.🙂
