In this latest episode #32 of The Farm Hand's Companion Show, Pa Mac demonstrates how to build a "tiny" barn for the small farm or homestead. (It's finally time to get out of the weather while milking his milk cow.) If you need a small shed or barn for your livestock, here's where it starts...and you can do it all by yourself-using materials that may be found right on your own property!
Be sure and subscribe to the Farm Hand's Companion channel to keep up with the progress as Pa Mac takes an undeveloped piece of property and turns it into a small subsistence farm. Watch for new episodes as often as Pa Mac can crank 'em out and still run a small farm. (As long as he's alive and kicking, he's most assuredly farming and filming!)
Also visit www.farmhandscompanion.com to find articles, posts, photographs, and encouragement for today's self-sufficient farm or homestead. (And be sure to check out the General Store for books (like Pa Mac's "Building an Old-fashioned Pole Barn") or DVD's by Pa Mac at www.farmhandscompanion.com/gen...)

I can not express my gratitude in text to the degree that I would like. This video inspired me to build a tiny barn using your design. I don't have access to a timber lot, so I had to make do with the farm store and lumber yard. I did add a four foot "porch" roof to the long front due to the summer Florida rains and I enclosed the feed trough area so Julie doesn't get her head wet. The siding is 6" wide fence pickets. It looks great! But more importantly it gives me a dry place to milk the cow. Thank you so much!

I just want to say that every time I watch one of your videos I’m left feeling like this project is achievable. Even without voiceover everything is clear and simple to understand. Maybe that’s actually because there is no voice over since I’m a visual learner. Your barn videos are the ones that had me pulling logs around yesterday. 🤗

Great job on the tiny barn! When I was a kid, we had coffee cans of old rusty nails, hinges and harness parts laying around my dad's workshop. He grew up in the depression and didn't throw away anything. My first job when he was building something was to straighten the nails that we pulled from old houses on our property.

As for the cedar poles, green or cured is fine, either way. It's always best to let the lumber cure awhile after millin' so their aren't big cracks between boards after they shrink a bit.

For the poles and sills.. does it matter what type of tree it is? You mentioned cedar but my property in North Western Ontario is flooded with birch, will using birch instead of cedar make a difference ?
@farmhandscompanion
@farmhandscompanion Ай бұрын
Hey Tanner, for the poles that are in contact with the ground, you need a tree type that is resistant to rot. I think birch would rot too quickly as poles, but might be a good option for the horizontal sills.
