A heirloom piece mimicking a heirloom piece. What a gorgeous hunter. Almost too nice to use for hunting, but I totally would. And of course we want to see the leather work.

A tip for leather stacked handles for knives, hatchets, goloks, etc. is to moisten the leather and pound it lightly or run it between rollers to compress the fibers, let it dry thoroughly then shape the handle and finally saturate with neatsfoot oil. I built dozens of such handles for the tools described above for myself and for others, with many still holding up after decades of hard use out in the field.

I thought I was subbed , my bad . I ve been watching these vids from my tv and wanted to come tell you how interesting all of the vids are and thanks . I m pretty content to work for myself as well and comfortable in a garage all day creating something cool or beautiful or on a job site . Speaking of not getting some days off a tornadoe came through last night and I got the call to check it out and it was a mess for a 150 ft touchdown hit one building and skipped the two I maintain . What luck . They’re good people so I imagine something of a higher power was involved . We love our older trucks too . I just gave a 2000 to a friend I had for years and we did a flatbed like yours to a duelly thst was all rusted , lol. It was so gone the plastic liner was the bed . You would have got a kick out of it but the motor is excellent . The things we like to do , haha . I love the knives too . Weather is changing here in ohio . Always this time Krueger and always a few days of rain this time of year

Beautiful outcome!! The tool is so simple it’s elegant. I really enjoy watching your work. I’ve done a number of re-handle projects and a few re-profile things and really enjoy the leatherwork!! I’ve forged one blade myself: did everything wrong, but it was pre-KZbin and really widespread internet days. Did the best I could with a wood stove and some tongs I found at a yard sale. Finally finished the knife and heat treated it in the oven; it’s good enough for a wall hanger 😜. My favorite part of your videos is the accent. I grew up in Montana, and wandered Alberta and BC a good bit. I really enjoyed The Great White North eh!! ♥️🇨🇦👍. My grandfather and great grandfather wandered Nova Scotia too. It’s in my blood.

Beautiful work! Now he won’t know which knife to use because the one you made is way nicer! Haha. Im from north Ontario here, but I’m visiting in Newfoundland near St. John’s, took a drive up to Bonavista a couple days ago, but I wish I could have done a drive through of Middle Arm! Newfoundland is a beautiful province with a rich history and some of the most genuine people I’ve ever met, and you’re one of them! Keep up the amazing work Kyle, and I always love to see a new video posted!

I have had several knives and hammers with stacked leather handles, they look great, feel good in the hand, and have no real longevity, nobody I know has ever made them properly waterproof ! if they get soaked, they swell and then shrink and eventually all the washers get loose, I have tightened them up. but never found that very satisfactory. In fact I must be the last guy to have an Estwing leather handled hammer working, it’s a bit odd and takes work to keep it going, I think leather is for indoor tools !

Absolutely beautiful piece, amigo, once again, your craftsmanship has created a masterpiece 👍👍👍👍 For some reason, I've never been a fan of how leather handles look, but I couldn't even say why, I guess simply personal preference, and, they're simply 'not for me' 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂🤷‍♂🤷‍♂ That being said, I still think that this is an absolutely beautiful piece, a true work of art 👍👍👍👍 I especially admire your solution for keeping the handle tight, with the adjustable nut to clamp everything in place and under pressure: Absolutely ingenious solution to the 'future-problem', of when the leather ages and thins 👍👍👍👍 Kudos indeed 👍👍👍👍

For cutting the leather you should try a carbon cutter blade.

I'm not sure about your forge set up, but O-1 tool steel really needs a good 15 minute soak at about 1490°F for the best heat treatment. If your forge has a controller on it that can hold a fairly tight temp window, you're good to go. I hear all the time people recommend O-1 for a beginner's steel and it simply just isn't true if you don't have the means of holding a precise temp. But, again like I said, there are ways to get a forge to hold a fairly tight temperature for soaking. 80CrV2, 8670, 1084 are all fairly forgiving steels to heat treat in a forge.

Looks very nice, personally I would have added spacers to liven up the handle a bit and add some contrast, nothing wrong with what you did just a little to simplistic IMO. The ole red white and blue would have added a lot, and gave it that classic look, I love using g10 spacers because they are a lot more stable and easier to work with than vulcanized fiber, very clean work though keep it up!

He was trying to replicate the grandfather's knife. If granddad's knife doesn't have red white and blue spacers in the handle, why in God's name would he just randomly insert them in there because he felt they might improve the look?
