Building A Wall & Installing A PVC Door - NEW WORKSHOP EPISODE 5

In this video I build an insulated stud wall in front of my roller garage door and install a secondhand PVC door. This wall will do three things: 1) it will limit the amount of sound coming in to the workshop from the nearby busy road and improve things thermally too 2) it will add an extra level of security to the workshop and 3) it will create a space at the front for timber storage accessible via the roller door. I used CLS timber to create a frame for the wall with studs and noggins and used plasterboard and MDF to clad the wall, plus a splash of white paint.

Isn't the aluminium profile that you cut off part of the lower doors isolation? Sure its in the way when rolling stuff in but there's a big gap now... Nevertheless: nice wall. I wonder how .any times you said “wall“ though... ;)

Your videos are great Keith. If that's what a teleprompter does for you, more KZbinrs should use them. It gives you authority and confidence, as well as a relaxed style which is easy on the ear. Oh, and the new garage is shaping up nicely. Coincidence that you and Jay Bates are both doing the same thing at the moment. Revealing the difference between the US and UK methods!

Sorry Dude that wall isn't going to last you the winter. Sorry I dont want to sound like a troll I not but you have made some bad choices there with you materials. Painted plasterboard isn't going to last, at any tiny week point its going to absorb moisture which will sprend and infect your stud work, the damp will move fast because you choose to build yor studs to the size of you insulation and not the plaster board 300mm centres any less and the wall is paper mache. Do yourself a favour take down the plasterboard and get some exterior grade plywood yes it more pricey but will last. Also while mdf is a good sound proofer its crap if not treated. Prime it an get at least 2 coats of paint on there if you want it to last👍😊🍻

Great to see it coming together. Your thoughts about the door width make sense:). When I insulated my (much smaller) workshop I didn't notice a much of a difference in sound transmission (after I insulated the walls and ceiling) until I put insulated shutters on the windows, insulated 'plugs' in the air-vents , and draft-stripping around the door. Then it suddenly became 'quiet' . . . . .

That came out well Keith. I was thinking about future equipment when I saw the size of your new door, not the furniture you will be building/refinishing. All that would mean is you might have to disassemble a new tool down to it's basic parts if needed. No big deal really. Have you thought about filling in that inspection trench and pouring cement? Keep up the good work Keith!
@ianmackney3089
@ianmackney3089 4 жыл бұрын
Pro tip, always leave the plasterboards about 25mm from the floor, as plastboards are gypsum based and porous and will suck up moisture and make the walls and timeber studs damp. Yes I see you've put it on DPC but you should elevate the plasterboard regardless.

Thank you for the video. Nothing make-shift at all about the plumb bob. Over an appreciable distance it is more accurate than a spirit level and a straight edge. Just as a tube with water in can transfer a horizontal level over large distances better than a horizontal spirit level. How did you brace the plasterboard sliver filler pieces between the bigger sheets that butted up to the wall and door frame? It looked like there was no vertical wood to screw into? Thank you again.

Kieth, good work on the studs mate. I'm so reliant on lasers these days but I liked the way you worked with what you had to get a result. People are making some valid points in the comments bud about the plaster board. At very least, I would suggest taking 20mm or so off the bottom of the boards to lift it off contact with the floor. Moisture issues with the board other than that will largely depend on how good a seal your garage door provides. It looks a nice one. Does it have a rubber seal/lipping on the bottom? You'll probably be alright if it does. If not, you'll want to keep an eye on the plaster boards. If it looks after a winter or two that damp is setting in, just remove it. Particularly as you're using it for wood storage. Totally agree with you on the door size. Plus, liking the plant pot!

Cheers. Yeah it does have a rubber seal at the bottom. I'll leave it as it is but keep an eye on it, I could always run an oscillating tool down the bottom of the plasterboard if necessary to get a bit more clearance but I think it's sitting on the dpc anyway

Know what you mean about the door. I'm swithering about the 900 wide door I have or getting a 1500 French Door. What, I think, will sway me towards the wider one is the thought of wanting a bit of kit further on down the line and struggling to get it through the bloody door. Knowing the occasional hassle of manoeuvring furniture, etc, into houses makes me want to avoid any such hassles again. I'm NOT going to build another workshop - might as well future-proof this one as far as possible...!

When I was finishing my basement I decided to go with a concrete floor stain but per the stain manufacturer I first had to check the dampness level to ensure it would successfully adhere and stay down. The manufacturer had you test by taping down a square of plastic to the floor for at least 48 hours. You then pull up the plastic and if you have a moisture problem you'll see the dampness in the gray outline where the plastic was on the floor (or in extreme cases the plastic will be wet) Here in my region of America housing slabs are usually 4 inches thick (100mm), unsure how things are over there but it's a simple test that might give you some peace of mind. I used a garbage bag and some gaffers tape to make removal easy when I did my test.

Drywall (plasterboard) should be cut to end on center of studs to prevent any flexing or cracks in joints later on and you should leave a gap at the base so it will not absorb moisture from the cement. You also forgot to skim coat.

Nice job. I was just asking myself when you started with the level on the wall, "Where is his plumb?" hahah Anyways, my take on the door: why a glass door when a crucial reason for installing (after storage space) is sound proofing? If it doesn't work, rip out the glass and install plaster sheets with insulation between. I sound proofed my own house using 2 layers of 12 mm plaster on a 2x2 frame that was mounted to the existing ceiling with metal springs. Works great.

Im not working in construction but drywall facing outdoor, woof framing with 2x3 facing an outdoor wall with roxul and not vapor barrier, spacing over 16’’ center, install door before doing the entire wall.. no headers over the door, and mdf that will swell from humidity... When you're using a speed or rafter square to guide your circular saw cuts, put the point towards you and grasp from the far edge. This does two things in that you'll have a longer straight edge to guide the start of the cut as well as a better grip to push back against the blade as you make the cut.

I really like the early access content. It was cool seeing you do something I typically do at work like build a wall and install a door. You did a fantastic job! Using a reclaimed door was a nice touch 👍
