One thing I would add, that would really help keep it nice and warm in a shelter like that, would be to find some rocks to kind of frame out half of your firepit. That way the rocks would be in between you and the fire, and as they heated it would keep the heat throughout the night.

I'd like to now why you didn't start a fire FIRST. I'm a former wilderness / big game guide. I always get a fire going and collect ample wood. It keeps me warm as I build the shelter and should I injure myself I have a fire that can save my life. It's hard to collect wood with a twisted ankle or an ax injury to the body. Loved the video, but safety first. Get the fire going. In the wilderness "It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it"

@Drrayoldman thank you for that piece of survival advice. So is it fire first then food then shelter or fire, shelter then food?
@Drrayoldman
@Drrayoldman 2 ай бұрын
@@storm3698 one can survive days or even weeks without food. Fire first, a shelter can be made near while keeping warm to fight off the cold. Pauses to warm the hands does wonders.

@@mg13-r3syou're comparing apples to oranges.. a bush survivalist spot hopper vs combat stealth enemy puppy kicker.. hes not trained like you are.. you can't survive without fire, you'll die.. its him.. no chopper ready to extract.. no medic.. we're not training for missions.. we are just trying to survive.. you decide in the moment, can I stay warm for long enough to get shelter, or do I start my fire? Need water, must start fire to melt snow.. I really hope he doesn't have to dodge bullets while havin some warm tea.. but that's cool the army teaches you to go camping and expect hostiles in the area that you have to deprive your natural survival instincts.. apples to oranges.. you're shttn on OP who's not wrong.. but not perfect like you are.. you're kid goes in boy scouts and you go camping with them, you're liable to scare the sht out of them, cuz they're gonna thing someone's hunting them while they're sleeping with a small fire for chrst sakes

Camping in minus 5 degrees Celsius was an unforgettable experience-the coldest I’ve ever camped in, it rarely gets mutch colder where i live. But despite layering up in my warmest gear, the chill crept in, especially during the night, making me appreciate the simple luxury of a hot drink by the fire. It was challenging and didnt got mutch sleep that night, but the quiet beauty of the frost-covered landscape made it all worthwhile.

My all-time favorite emergency shelter on KZbin for two reasons. #1. Its ingenious two saw-horse construction technique allowed for plenty of space, while offering very good protection against the snow. #2. It looked like something a "normal" person could construct with a minimum of tools and no chain saws. I don't like those Taj Mahal-like dugout "emergency" shelters with perfectly cut 12 inch logs, rock and mortar fireplaces, etc. Nice job and thanks for posting.

I carried a 10ft x 212 ft sheet of 4 mil plastic into a hunt with me; snow made no difference as it was blocked from being a wetting agent; also, it blocked the wind from 4 directions when used correctly with found wooden supports and a hatchet. Weight less than 1 pound with 100 ft of small cordage for adding cock tie points for tensioning the plastic shelter into place. Fire starter in a bag and 1 pound approximate of small sticks to aid in getting scavenged wood to burn in a stacked and angled old trapper fire style.

I would be freezing no matter what. Doubtful I'd be able to build something as sophisticated as this especially being hypothermic. This is really nice, roomy and sturdy. I would have to stay within my abilities and build a small lean-to somehow without cutting anything. Maybe after warming up and resting i could spend the next day upgrading to this sort of construction. Nice job!!

Two comments/tips, 1. When you make the roof rather than cutting the thinner top off to length, cut part of the way through and then fold down. This then forms your end wall that you can lay evergreen branches against, as you did with the side. 2. when doing the side with evergreen branches a) do this BEFORE covering the roof with evergreen branches, and use last branch junction [bottom branch of a growing tree] to form a hook. This is then hung over your outer most roof pole. When you then put the evergreen branch roof on this stops the side from being blown/disturbed by the wind.The top won't be blown away as a) you have a lot of weighted branches on top of each other with gravity acting on them, and b) when it snows this will add more weight and form an air/water tight roof.

Tipi style is better. The melting snow mostly runs down the logs instead of dripping on your head. Plus you can have the fire in the center and allow good air current through so that the smoke vents through the middle and you can be closer to the fire. It also retains heat well.

14 degrees Fahrenheit. The moisture can get into your lungs and ears and cause a very bad illness. Its best to keep cotton towels inside as dry. They absorb the moisture you breathe especially if you sleep on your back. Some more tips, always build a fire first and gather large logs and make it a huge fire. Always make a 3 sided wall for the fire so that the fire deflects, then build your shelter. Put more logs or branches for your shelter and always bring a tarp. Days of old they used animals skins and waxed them. You can wax canvas as a tarp. Tarp over all the pine branches.
