Another thing to consider would be to change the door knobs to lever handles. They are easier for people who are elderly and frail or people with disabilities to open, especially from a wheelchair.

from the Netherlands thanks for the video . I myself had placed a railing all the way down so that the steering wheels of the wheelchair can slide along it and that the wheelchair can slide along the railing and not be able to steer off the ramp between the posts

As a long time wheelchair user your ramp came out really good. Something everyone should think about. Everyone gets older and your body is not as young as it once was so how ever you need to make your home to make easier to get around think about the future!

Looks perfect. We always grind all the sharp edges with a 4'' grinder with an 80 grit soft wheel, makes everything look a little better and safer with rounded corners. The only time we gap the 5/4 deck boards is when they're outside to let rain, snow, pine needles, etc. fall through easier. Thumbs up.

You need edge protection to keep the wheels from accidentally falling off the ramp. It’s done either with surface of the ramp being 12 inches beyond the rail or a bottom guard to prevent a sphere of 4 inches going through up to 4 inches from the ramp surface. It’s required by ADA and A117.1 for safety reasons.

Great point! That is what I was mentioning at the end. I think I will run a 2x4 along the bottom edge to finish it off

Basically the curb or rail along the ramp floor will prevent the chair falling off the edge and should the chair suddenly turn to the right.

@@SSLFamilyDad I was thinking that more 5/4 at the footrest height of a wheelchair would be useful to protect the drywall on the one side, and to prevent crashes against the 4x4 posts on the other side.

Also if you're trying to make it compliant there has to be another handrail that extends past the original rail that one would not pass inspection for ADA

Nice work. I'm going to add a short ramp on my in-laws porch entryway, this will be my first project since suffering a series of strokes 2 years ago. Lot of right side brain damage, last 30 years I built my own security company worked for myself, now I often can't handle standing at the stove to cook, lol. I'll have my 25 year old son help me

Bless you.... You make it look effortless, but it's real work. Needs a speed bump for the top to keep a wheelchair from going back down on its own. In this county an inner rail is needed to run along and below your flat top, which is not really a grip, like a handrail is. Shop around, a contiguous long rail can be expensive. Freebie tree trim, stripped of bark and sanded....beautiful form. Vevor has nice handrails, fairly priced and attractive. They have rubber door thresholds too. When I meet a fine craftsperson as yourself...please take on a young apprentice. Find an eager beaver through a church group or something, an inner city kid who can turn this into a job. A life skill. Anyone could go door to door selling this home improvement. Specialized work, but everybody wants it. Increased home value? Yep. Eight hours can be six and you'd be doing a good job, twice.

Can you get an ambulance stretcher onto the bottom of that ramp? Most folks don’t even consider it. Handicap accessible isn’t the same as stretcher accessible.
@FireDude13

Great point. As a retired firefighter/EMT I can tell how challenging that can be. A new 4 story retirement apartment complex went in our town a few years before I retired... somehow when approving the blueprints, our fire marshal missed the elevator being too small for a stretcher to fit into. We could squeeze it in if we raised the head end (part of the frame could drop down as well), but no way it would fit if we had a backboard on the cot. We could barely make the turns in the stairwells with the cot flat. We jokingly advised the apartment manager to put the healthiest people on the top floor... lol.

Use the decking for the handrail on the wall, as well. Unless someone is going to freak out that it doesn't look like a handrail is 'supposed to look'... Just cut small chunks of 2x material and screw those to the studs. Then cut the decking piece in half lengthwise, and screw that to the 2x blocks.

Nice wood butchering! Gave me some good ideas on a plan for the one I'm bout to build, actually for my father-in-law. I'll probably pop a straight line on the floor and lay out the posts on their side and pop the slope line on them, cut them on the table. so I won't have to run that circular saw in position. Thanks for the post!

Great video. I made 2 ramps at our home here in FL. I built the ramps on the fly without researching the requirements. We had to take the ramps up because of a flaw. Both ends of the ramp was not flat. We found out any bumps put my wife at a risk of falling. I am about to build replacement ramps and your video gave me insight into how to better build a ramp. The only question I have is: How did you finish the bottom transition where the wood meets the concrete floor?

Aloha, Todd. Great project. Can I ask you for some further details/tips for securing brackets to cement? I am building a lock-up in my garage for tools & equipment. Floor is smooth cement. Would be grateful for a tools, materials and fixings list from you please. What is that drill & drill bit you’re using? (Can I use my Dewalt corded drill if I buy the right bit, or does it not have enough power?). What kind of bolts are best to secure the bracket to the cement? Would be grateful for any advice … I only want to drill holes in my garage floor once 😉

Plywood might actually cost more if you got 3/4” hardwood ply which I would recommend if you were going to be using it as decking. The deck boards are much stronger and will not require as much support members either

i used plywood for the rp part need some that would cost less i use many legs not how i wanted to do it but money was the problem low budget how i wanted to do it was ro use 6x6 beams but 3 on the play wood and for the side and the legs wanted to use if thy make it that thick a 2 inch thick play wood for the side that be the legs and the skirt to keep the wheel chair from going off the sides so i be stand the 2 inch thick plywood side ways cut out the step part to fit to the step then cut it hight then the rap to have side to keep the wheel chair from falling out of the side the reson i wanted to use 6x6 to make the rap extra strong as for the rap part 1 inch thick be ok but i could not do it that way so i still need to pain it and put side panels to keep th chiar from rooling off the sides and maybe add some hand rails

Do not use this as a guide on design for an Accessible Ramp. But the intent is appreciated. Sources Accessible guidance include FHA (bit dated circa mid 1980s) ADA standard for accessible design 2010 A117.1-09 or 17 (depending upon state adoption of building/residential codes). Information for these is online. KZbin doesn’t always like links being included else I would.
