Masterful! When I was a kid my dad and I built a ten foot pram from plans we found in boys life. Later I refurbished a 50 yr old Lightning. Thank you so much for posting this!

Great job! I built a Whilly Tern about 10 years ago in Perth, many happy hours tinkering down the shed, a nice slow build (about 18 months) and launched on the Swan River. Sold it now but what a worthwhile project. Mine was called Skyeblue!

You can tell the beautifully balanced lines of the Oughtred design anywhere, and what exquisite workmanship. Obviously an old Mirror sailor to be using Walker sails. Great stuff. Has the documentary film been released yet?
@thewedgeteam9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Graeme, and yes - those signature Oughtred lines are indeed the hallmark of a true artist. You are correct, Mirror Prime Time shares the shed with Ghille Callum and is back sailing again this season with our 8 year old as crew. Film post production has recommenced after a hiatus. I am often reminded that many Oughtred inspired projects take time. This one has been no exception...:-))

6mm gaboon plywood (Joubert from France) for the hull planks. Solid timbers are Huon Pine, Meranti and Australian Red Cedar. The mast support is teak.

superb how long did it take?
@thewedgeteam10 жыл бұрын
There was about 800 hours all up, however the combination of filming the steps and being a first time lapstrake builder probably doubled the time...so I would say 400 hours for a reasonably handy amateur builder.

Does this boat come with and without the sail? Where did you obtain the plans or, are you the individual that came up with the idea?
@thewedgeteam6 жыл бұрын
Iain Oughtred is the designer, a delightfully gifted artisan based in Scotland. The boat is home built with the sails made by Steve Walker, a Tasmanian sailmaker who crafts a lot of traditional boat sails and a great many racing sails for Mirror class dinghies.
@PhilMoon10010 жыл бұрын
Where can I get the plans? Will the plans come with a material and hardware list? Awesome job! I'd like to try that.
@thewedgeteam10 жыл бұрын
Plans are available through WoodenBoat in the US, StrayDog in Australia and directly from Iain or Jordan Boats in the UK. Plans come with a materials list. Two larger versions of the design are available - the Gannet and Fulmar. She sails beautifully.
@MrPmikota10 жыл бұрын
thewedgeteam Do the plans provide all the tools you would need?
@thewedgeteam9 жыл бұрын
Paul Mikota Tool requirements are reasonably basic, tape measure, screwdriver, scraper, chisel, straight edge or spirit level, square, marking gauge, jigsaw, block plane, smoothing plane, power drill, random orbital sander, spokeshave and clamps.....lots of clamps. Optional tools include a router, table saw or bandsaw & thickness planer. And pencils, lots of pencils.

@PineappleOranges9 жыл бұрын
Pinak Art Paul Mikota I recently sent an inquiry to the Boatbuilding Academy abut their construction of the Iain Oughtred's Gannet. The Gannet is a slightly larger version of the Shearwater. Below is a listing of their costs: Timber: £1475 Materials/fittings: £1760 Sails: £690 Trailer (+ EU spec lights): £685 ------------------------------------------------- Total: £4610 They strip planked instead of clinker planking. Additionally, they sheathed the interior and exterior with fiberglass, so this may raise costs if it isn't per the plans.
@thewedgeteam9 жыл бұрын
Paul Mikota Making it as part of a film added time and cost, as did the use of rare timbers such as Huon Pine and aircraft grade Sitka Spruce. In normal circumstances we would expect a Shearwater built to similar specification could be completed for around AUD7,000 (USD6,500) excluding trailer and labour.
