Building Acoustic Panel Movie Posters for our Home Theater! | Step by Step

Great video. Just a couple of tips for your viewers from the current "curator" of this process for the past 5 or so years on AVS... Basic Combed Cotton does work well and is a low cost option, however if someone has a few more dollars to spend, Performance Knit offers deeper colors and even better acoustical transparency to let the insulation do its work. Speaking of insulation, using a rigid style acoustical insulation like OC703 or some similar product means no need for all of the "webbing" to prevent the softer insulation from bulging out the front. Rigid insulation also offers a better broadband (wider frequency range) performance for the panels. By using rigid insulation you can also put the insulation close to the printed fabric and leave an air gap between it and the wall.. This effectively improves the performance of the panel, particularly in lower frequencies, and the air is free. Lastly, you are spot on that a lot of movie posters are around 24x36 in size, but more importantly that they are in a 1:1.5 ratio. If using 24" wide insulation, and a frame made with 1x__ lumber (1x4 for example which is 0.75inches thick), I recommend making the image 25.5" wide and to keep the 1:1.5 ratio, 38.25" tall. That way you can more easily fit the 24" wide insulation inside the width of the frame without having to trim it. This again is really important when using the higher performance rigid insulation. Nobody should take these comments as ripping this video apart. I worked closely with Kyle from Life of Bliss on his video using the AVS method, and we agreed that for simplicity sake, some details or specifics were left out. I just want to point to some options to take these even to the next level of awesomeness. Again. Great video!

Curtains are one of the WORST ideas in soundproofing right up there with cheap foam squares stuck to walls. Curtains have been proven time and time again to be poor "soundproofing technology." Maybe you get "25dB tested" reduction at a specific frequency range, but that would be fairly limited in range, even with the thickest and heaviest curtains on your list. I mean even logic states that you can't replicate a fully decoupled room, with 2 layers of heavy mass drywall, and an isolating fluidic material like Green Glue by just hanging a curtain. If you could, then everyone would do that because it would be cheaper and easier. Sure, you might impact some clap/slap echo in a room, but that is internal acoustics more than soundproofing, and still a bad idea compared to broadband absorption panels or other acoustical treatments.

Ok this sounds like a great solution/improvement on this tutorial so we don't need to mess around with string and staples by going with the rigid panels. Just one question though would you use the 4" thick type or the 2" thick?

@@Roshean47 4" rigid insulation (or any acoustical insulation) will allow these broadband absorber panels to handle more lower frequencies, but they do stick out from the wall quite a bit and don't always fit the decor and the 4" material can be expensive. Another option is to build frames out if 1x4 lumber which is 3.5" deep. Put the rigid insulation near the outside "poster" printed fabric, and then you have a 1.5" air gap between the insulation and the wall. This "free" air gap will boost performance of the 2" insulation. In fact a piece of 2" OC703 insulation with a 2" air gap behind it performs similarly to a 4" piece of OC703 but is using free air. Yes, the 4" is still better, but the cost difference makes it hardly worth the 4" price.

It’s funny when I did mine I hadn’t seen Kyles video or been on the Avsforum. I got the idea for movie mania because I was using it to pull custom thumbnails on my Plex server and saw how awesome they were so I went that way! For the panels that are bigger (31 by 60), how are you able to get them printed on material that is a standard yard of 36"? Wouldn't you need 4 to 5 inches on each side to wrap the material around the frame?

Great video. I have been meaning to do this myself for a while, but just haven't gotten around to finishing the theater.... to busy using it as is, lol. Anyway I love the idea with the move reel strip, and I think it would be perfect for an area I need to cover/hide. Thanks for watching! I would cut the sides to 36" and the top/bottom pieces to 23". This will give you an outer dimension of 24" x 36". And of course, the 23" pieces go between the 36" pieces.

Thanks for watching! You should just be able to hit CTRL + Z to undo whatever action got your photo uncentered. If that doesn't work, you might have to start the process in Paint.NET again.

What if you are going to hang your panels horizontally and need a horizontal image but the resolution isn't as high as the one you downloaded in this video?

Depending on the size, if you're going to be building posters similar to the ones we built, you're going to want to stay as close to the suggested resolution as possible, or it'll start looking grainy/blurry. Thanks for watching!

@@CynsCorner The big posters we hung on the sloped ceiling are 36" x 60", and the ones we put on the back wall are 40" x 25". The same resolution was used on all of the posters, but you can tell that the posters put on the 36" x 60" posters aren't quite as clear as the smaller ones, but they still look great.

Thanks for watching & sorry for the slow response! We used 150dpi because we're upscaling the photo anyway, so in reality the true DPI of the image is a lot smaller than the 150dpi minimum. And to us there was no point in making the file bigger than it had to be.

I followed you advice with size and everything. I am adding a black border as mentioned in your video. I have it set to flood mode: contiguous (default), Fill: Solid (default), Tolerance: 50% (default) and everything else as the default matching the video. However, when I pour the bucket on the white border it actually affects (fills) part of the image as well. What am I missing? (avengers-infinity-war). Paint.Net v4.3.10
