What size LVL ridge beam and non treated dimensional lumber end beams did you use? Looks like 2x12? Thank you making these videos.

The LVL was a double 1 3/4” x 14”. The end beams were either 2x10 or 2x12. I don’t remember exactly.

Question: those 6x6 corner posts that hold up the roof. I see that on top of those 6x6 posts you placed those beams. I see that you used a pair of Simpson LPC post caps to secure the beams to the 6x6 post. However, for the OTHER beam that you also placed on top of the 6x6 corner post (i.e. 2 beams sharing one 6x6 post), I can't see how you connected that second beam to the beam. To say it another way, I'm referring to that beam that runs parallel to the house. It sits on 6x6 posts shared by other beams running perpendicular. I'd like to know how you secured the beam that runs parallel to the house, to the post.

I could be mistaken, but what I think you are referring to is the timber beam we installed in the next video (Part 4)? Full clarity, I don’t remember exactly how we attached everything, because it was several years ago. I do know everything passed inspection.

@@thebedfords Yes, I believe that's it, in the next video (part 4) I first see it appear in that video at 2:58. I'm currently trying to design my own patio roof structure and am having trouble finding full details on how to connect that beam to the post. If you happen to recall, that would be great. either way, thanks for replying
@thebedfords

@@thinkoutsidethecontainer because it was an exposed timber beam, I think we just screwed through the end of the 2x beam coming off the house, into the end of the timber beam. But we’ve done a more traditional 2x beam all the way around on others, and we just overlap them in a way that allowed us to have all 4 members of the beams land on the post, and used a bracket which we may have modified slightly (not sure) to properly fasten everything.

How are the roof posts attched after the fact? Were there footings made in part 1 or were they attched directly to the top? Can't wait to see the final project.
@thebedfords
@thebedfords 3 жыл бұрын
So the footings for the deck were indeed shown in part 1. From the ground up it was poured concrete footings, on top of which were sitting 6x6 posts holding up two girders made of double 2x12s. The two girders are what hold up the deck joists. So the 6x6 posts that hold up the roof assembly--some are attached with brackets to the deck framing, and the center post holding up the ridge beam for the roof, actually fit down inside the deck framing system and bolted to that. All connections either meet or exceed the required building code. I haven't actually filmed the final part yet, so when I do, I'm gonna try to actually show and talk about some of the questions that have been asked on these videos. Hope all that made sense!

Looks like your waterproofing solution between the joists (in the joist bays) precludes you blocking those joists properly. Won't that lead to joist bending or twisting over time?
@thebedfords
@thebedfords Жыл бұрын
It's probably less effective than fully blocking, but the joists are fastened to the girder running down the middle of the deck, not just sitting on it.

I love this video series. Porch looks great. Did you add any support in the wall below the pockets for the lower roof beams? Or did there happen to be studs there to rest them on?
@thebedfords

There were already enough studs in those locations to carry the load.

Can’t seem to find any videos on how the decking gets installed over these water proof systems Does it self seal after screwing into it???
@thebedfords
@thebedfords 2 жыл бұрын
Pretty much. Between the thick EPDM membrane, plus the tape over each joint on top of the joists, it should be darn near totally self-sealing. I've never done this system over finished interior space before, but I think it would be suitable for that. It's always just been a simple matter of the client trying to reduce the amount of water, debris, etc that would get on stuff they are storing under the deck.

What area do you live in the country? I'll be flat out honest with you. I've fallen in love with this design, I might do my best to replicate this within the realm of my budget... will be a project over years not months. I'm in Ohio, would I be able to use this type of framing and have it be good enough for "snow weight"?
@thebedfords
@thebedfords Жыл бұрын
We are in central Virginia. The “snow weight” you are referring to is called live load. You can Google live load vs dead load. Dead load is the weight that is always present on a structure, while live load is something that happened on and off (like snow). It’s something you can find out by talking to your local building inspector or an engineer. I wouldn’t be surprised if you guys have higher live load ratings required up there, which would simply mean you need bigger lumber lumber for the rafters, and they might need to be closer together.

@@Bankair121 if you are talking about the vertical timber out at the gable end, attaching to the 6x6, I think I cover that later in a different video. The horizontal timber lands on top of the 6x6, then we used one of these hidden brackets to attach the vertical timber to the other timber. You can see this at 8:17 in the part 5 video. You can see the three holes where the metal dowels go through the timber. www.fastenersplus.com/collections/cptz-concealed-post-bases?Dynamic+Ads+-+Connectors+-+Post+Caps+%26+Bases&hsa_acc=3477180114&hsa_cam=15230857591&hsa_grp=127489022777&hsa_ad=570921792178&hsa_src=g&hsa_tgt=dsa-1460184531542&hsa_kw=&hsa_mt=&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_ver=3&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwIOV6veq-AIViLzICh2x-wHIEAAYASAAEgKLGPD_BwE
