I’d love to see a photo slide show video of all the connection points and details. This is one of the best deck videos on KZbin, but I still have questions.😅

My apologies, I am only just now seeing this comment for some reason. I don't think we have good pictures showing every single connection point. I do know that we had very thorough inspectors that approved everything before anything got covered up by finish materials. If I recall correctly, we actually had an inspector come out for a partial framing inspection, because of the variety of finishes (PVC, decking, T&G ceiling, etc).

Nice work but why put the EPDM rubber under the deck if you are putting a roof overhead?
@thebedfords2 жыл бұрын
I asked the same question of our project manager when we were getting started on the project haha. The primary reason is that it doesn’t cost that much extra (in the scope of everything else going on) to add the waterproofing. I don’t know if ever showed up in one of the videos, but with the roof being 8-9 feet off the decking, there is of course a decent amount of rain that will blow into the deck. It also gives the client the option to power wash or just simply hose off the deck and furniture (think pollen season) and not worry about everything underneath getting wet. The horizontal skirting should do a pretty good job of keeping the ‘sideways rain’ from getting very far at all underneath the deck as well.

Great series!! Did you put extra blocking under the fireplace or how did you know if the deck would support the weight of the fireplace with the brick and stone, also what product is the fireplace itself? I’m looking into adding a wood burning fireplace very similar to this on my 2nd story deck build and don’t know if I need blocking from the ground. Thank you so much!!

Yes, we doubled each joist under the fireplace. Knowing how much extra support to add is something that the engineer or plan reviewer did calculations on before approving our plans. The fireplace is a WRE4500 Series from Superior Fireplaces.

What’s the guidance on a fireplace over composite decking and epdm membrane. You’d hate to have that dripping down after having the fireplace on all night.

Valid point, but considering it’s just a gas fireplace, I don’t think there was any issue with it.

How did you seal the interface between the roof and the siding?
@thebedfords3 жыл бұрын
So whenever we are building a new roof (addition, porch, deck, etc) we cut the siding back approximately 2” above where the shingles will be for several reasons. First, it allows our roofers better access to get their step flashing in place behind the courses of siding. Second, it keeps the siding edge up off the surface of the roof so it’s less likely to not only catch debris, but absorb water. Especially in this case, because it’s Masonite siding.

Why didn't y'all use manufactured trusses for the roof?
@thebedfords2 жыл бұрын
I believe it’s simply because the client wanted the vaulted ceiling. Which of course could be achieved with trusses, but not at the same pitch as we could do with timer framing.

@@thebedfords I gotcha. Looks great. I'm working on a similar porch at my house but with a 3 hip bay window roof in the way and a flat roof right beside it. Looking for inspiration.

I understand the water collection under the deck, but why do all that under a covered roof?
@thebedfords Жыл бұрын
The roof would keep part of the deck dry, but depending how hard the wind is blowing during rain, it might not be much. Then consider if you are rinsing or power washing the deck, you be dumping a lot of water under it.
