By the time you have finished this project you can start with either NASA or Boeing. A pleasure to watch.
@blacknightcreations18 күн бұрын
I’d think about NASA, feel like Boeing on the way down

England supports your excellent work ethic. E30 looking phenomenal. It’s certainly coming all together. Only gripe is when you paint it black, all those awesome M3 body lines will disappear. Sadly. It’s happened here. 🇬🇧🇬🇧❤

I really enjoyed this episode / video. The problem solving is the part of a project that is fun!

I’ve been thinking about this for over a year now and I’m pretty sure this is the best solution, I’m so happy that in a week or two I’m going to have a fully functional tailgate!

Got my T-Shirt… thanks Office Lewis! Gotta say, I bought it to support the channel and awesome project. But it’s bloody good… Bonus! Also my new purchase (318is E30), smells nicer than it did on pickup… fresh sent o’ lifting rock crab!!! Thanks mate. Love your work!

I’ve been wearing the tshirts for 3 years so comfortable and durable! If only the supplier offered crab scented car air fresheners!

Nice work and love your thought process on working through the steps. Not everything can be bought off the shelf. Love this type of work there is always a solution!!

I figure anything can be done with enough thought put in.

She's coming along nicely. I admire the commitment to keeping everything looking OEM, I'd be tempted to take the easy way out and throw something together with stock dimensional steel. Already looks great, excited to see more as it progresses.

Since I started the build I’ve been picturing lowering the tailgate and eating a sandwich and drinking a beer, it’s been far more complicated than I thought but will be worth it in the end. Cheers for the support!

Can’t wait to see this finished, it’s going to be sick

This is a huge step closer to being able to finish the chassis, engine being a known swap shouldn’t put up anywhere near as much of a challenge

You doing a great job Lewis! I think a rear boot spoiler like mtech1 or IS would be a cool touch on that rear end🤔😎

Thanks! Yes it’s something I’ve been discussing with a mate, looking into either a lip or maybe something custom But you’re completely right it needs something

Halfway through, loving the plan.. lets hope it all works out, must admit I thought you would make the other design work, but this certainly looks better
@blacknightcreations19 күн бұрын
Yeah I’m sure I could have gotten it working but this is much simpler and I think neater looking.

Could use with something like a bump stop for the hinges hidden behind the bumper to stop tailgate from dropping too low
@blacknightcreations19 күн бұрын
For sure! The pins are doing it for now but the strap will help as well. Probably worth putting a rubber bit over the pin though.

Have you considered a 6 bar hinge mechanism. It would give all the clearance you need.
@blacknightcreations3 күн бұрын
Just had a look and yes I think that would have worked. There are many ways to skin a cat I’ve just chosen this way. Somewhat comes down to what I think I can comfortably fabricate and what I think will look the best and be hidden away.

Hi Lewis to power of two.. I have got picks of naked m3 here without bumpers during strip down 🤤🙈
@blacknightcreations19 күн бұрын
That could definitely be useful, I’m curious to see how the rear bumper attaches to the rear quarter near the wheel arch and I haven’t done the genuine front bumper either
@noahmuir814815 күн бұрын
Are you planning to make a fibreglass hardlid? Tonneau or roller shutter even or maybe just leave it as is? I can’t imagine you’d want to mess with the top of the m3 quarter panels to put a tonneau on it lol
@blacknightcreations15 күн бұрын
I think given how much effort I’ve put into keeping the tub/tray looking OEM it would be a shame to cover it up. A hard lid might be an episode for the future though

Was office Lewis screaming at workshop Lewis when you welded the latch on the wrong side?
@blacknightcreations19 күн бұрын
Office Lewis often is screaming at workshop Lewis, the amount of mistakes that get edited out is pretty high

Hi Workshop Lewis,have you considered a gas strut for the lift portion of the tailgate?No need for a stopper then.Cheers from a fellow South Australian
@blacknightcreations19 күн бұрын
Howdy, yeah I have thought I might be able to squeeze one in both side just need to see how the next part of the tailgate goes. Cheers for the support and hopefully you’re seeing the Ute out at car meets
@2512MaTHias19 күн бұрын
Respect to your project and construction, man. But I ask myself all the time if you’re reinventing the wheel with the tailgate? Isn’t there any solution with strong bow-shaped trunk lid hinges or shear mechanism hood/lid hinges of any other car/truck making it easier for you also sparepart-wise??? 😮
@blacknightcreations19 күн бұрын
You’re not wrong but most of the hinges I looked at and thought about weren’t weight bearing and hiding them in the tailgate wouldn’t be possible. They’d be a bit of an eyesore in my opinion
@marchenning503716 күн бұрын
I really enjoy watching your series but I'm very ignorant when it comes to all things BMW. Couldn't help thinking was it not possible to use the same hinge latches etc as the bonnet has. Or would it be to cumbersome?
@blacknightcreations16 күн бұрын
Fair question, it wouldn’t be able to take the weight of the tailgate with someone sitting in it and also it wouldn’t be as easy to hide in the chassis either. There’s been heaps to consider and I think this is the best option but only time will tell

What's the reason for the 75% pilot rule workshop Lewis?
@blacknightcreations12 күн бұрын
A drill still needs a decent amount of material or it can burn out the corner of the cutting edge of the final drill, if you don’t notice it will cause excessive friction and work harden what you’re trying to drill and then your in for all kinds of fun.
@jamesborst838319 күн бұрын
You are over thinking the tailgate, the best explanation I can give you is to look at an American truck tailgate and integrate that into your Ute build, good luck

@@blacknightcreationsI understand the design decision. The trick will be having a stranger open your tailgate.
@blacknightcreations19 күн бұрын
Yeah I think the real trick will be not letting anyone open the tailgate
