I have a little storey regarding the 2Litre Triumph Vitesse! My family home was across the road from the Triumph Service Station on the outskirts of Coventry on the A45. My father loved his cars and we had had quite a few Triumphs, including the 1600 Vitesse. But Dad had his engine blue printed and wider wheels put on it. Because it was still new, it had to go for its regular services across the road. My Dad got a phone call from Mr Wills, the Triumph service manager who asked for a chat, so he went to see him. Mr Wills asked my father why he had done the mods to a brand new car. My father told him, it had handle so badly because of the narrow wheels and wideth of the wheel track, plus the engine was gutless! Sometime later, my father got another call from Mr Wills and on turning up, he got given a set of keys to a 2Litre Vitesse and got asked to take it for a while, to test drive and to give a report back on it.

My father bought a new MGB drove it to London and drove it back took it to the garage and handed it back saying it was the worst car he had ever driven, he then bought an Elan as a kit which I helped assemble , I went to school in a brand new Elan when the others were in anglias and 1100s

Hiya Ben, many many centuries ago I used to work on these, more specifically the Herald not the Vitesse but they are basically the same car. When the car was on the ramp did you wonder how you would change the clutch on these? The gearbox won't clear the chassis rails, that's because it comes out inside the car. If you remove the carpets there is a fibre glass material bell housing cover held in place by a few bolts and If I recall that's how you get to the slave cylinder as well. The secret to bleeding the back brakes is to get the rear of the car jacked up as high as possible off the floor and bleed the N/S/R wheel first. You should end up with a decent pedal then. Cheers.
@woodbine66
@woodbine66 8 күн бұрын
Same as when I changed the clutches on my Dolomite and P4 Rover. Taking the gearbox out through the big hole under the dash, so much more civilised than trying to wrestle it out lying under the car.

Hi Ben, it all looks original. Just a few pointers for you, Volvo Lentz are on-board boat diesel engines. The wood from is all veneered so if you remove it the base under heath is not the same wood, you have to reveneer it. The carbs are strobergs, not su's. They have a rubber membrane inside which will probably need replacing. The black job on to unscrew and needs a thin oil to act as a swamped to the needle valve that controls the petrol flow through the main jet. The oil filter you found goes on the canister on the underside of the engine, Rimmers do an upgrade now which has a hollow threaded fitting into the block and they supply a screw on disposable filter. Check the water pump isn't seized and replace can belt. The rad / heater hoses will need to be replaced and the whole cooling system flushed & back flushed. The fuel tank has a lever at the top near the pipe which has a reserve position (1/4 turn, I think) all the rubber petrol pipe connections will need to be replaced for e10 comparable (from Rimmers) and you'll need to check if the fuel needs an additive for you to use modern unleaded fuel or head off and new valve seats. Important point, it may still be +positive earth not the usual -negative. Don't push it too hard round corners as the transverse mounted rear spring can make the rear wheels cold under, there is a fix for this I don't know if Rimmers can supply you with one, anti tramping. Good luck with the project

That was a car I really fancied in the 60s! That 2.0 six cylinder made it quite a hot rod. 75k miles is getting up there in mileage and of course it has the lethal Triumph rear suspension, feeble differential and probably at least rusty outriggers, but still a great car.

Best video for ages. God I always wanted a Vitesse. I'm 70 now but loved my first car, a 12.50 herald bought for £25 after I had passed my test. No syncromesh between first and second, that took a bit of getting used to. Head gasket failed after 2 weeks. Dad showed me how to do it. Lasted until it soon rotted. A few years later I bought a 13/60. Full syncromesh and much better. It did need an engine rebuild due to crank shaft thrust washers coming adrift. God how I wanted Vitesse...

Loved my 64 1600 model. Make sure you do not try burnouts in her, if its as weak as my model was, the inner axle turns into a corkscrew, and eventually snaps, as i found out. (was a sod to replace too, think petrol tank had to come out to get to some bolts -but could be wrong as was in the 80's)

My first Triumph was a Mk I 1.6 Litre Vitesse soft top. As my two daughters grew up 'er indoors said that they could not see out the back..........and by that time I knew a lot about Vitesses. So Vitesse no. 2 was a 2 litre Mk II saloon with over drive and sunroof and tow bar. Knew I needed the overdrive as you could over rev. the thing in top. Several memorable trips like Southampton to Stevenage in 1 hr 30 mins. Fortunately 'er indoors and two daughters asleep and being late night the "circuit marshalls " had gone to bed. Best I saw was 115 mph. Fully independent front and rear suspension and when visiting Lotus cars on a business trip was astonished to see all the Triumph Vitesse 2 Litre Mk II front and rear suspension bits lying in their stores, that being the bits used on their Elan. The rear suspension used rubber donuts at the outer ends and if careless with the clutch you got from o to 30 in three leaps. In hind sight one of the best things about it was that it looked like a Triumph Herald so didn't attract unwanted attention. Would of course out acelerate, out corner and was faster than the MGB GT.

You just can't escape your own history. I owned not a Vitesse but the earliest of the Heralds (the 975) from 1971 to 1975 in Australia. And in 1965, together with its young owner and three other compadres, I drove up to London from the leafy southern suburbs to buy the first team strip for Caterham United FC, which was founded by a group of St Joseph's RC College students at the end of their sentences so that we had somewhere to play football after we left school that year...all those years ago...

My brother restored a Vitesse soft top back in the late 70s / early 80s. It was a nice car.

Loved those cars , my brother had a Vitesse convertible twin carb, I fell in love with that thing, I was only a teenager, so too young to buy it.😮

Hi Ben, great channel. I am 59 and I have owned some of the cars you have fixed. My Mum had a Austin 1300 GT in white EDD656L it was a lovely car. My friends mum had a triumph Herald in white and yellow but it had a smaller engine than the vitesse. Another friends dad had a rover P6 in mustard yellow 3500 V8 that was a beautiful car. He had the rear tyre attached to the boot lid in a black vinyl cover remember it well. Keep up the good work, amazing channel

Many, many years ago when the only two measurements we needed was points and plugs. It was a piece of a cigarette packet for the points. (Approx 16 thou’) and a hacksaw blade for the spark plugs. ( 25 thou’) lol

At 1.15 and in tears about the 34+ attempts. Really, with those Bendix type starters, the better option for a stubborn engine is a rope. The trouble is, each time a cylinder fires, it kicks the starter out of mesh. If the next cylinder is not ready to contribute, the engine stops and the (now disengaged) starter can’t keep it turning. A rope, however, depending on what’s at the other end of it, will keep it from stopping. In my case it used to be a parental Datsun Bluebird. Our neighbours loved me. A 2am run up the road with the Datsun screaming in first gear, soon followed by a return with an often poorly running subject popping and spitting at high rpm is exactly what you want to hear on a Sunday night when kids have school in the morning. However, once it’s running at all, you can listen to it and adjust things, to make it happier. For that reason, I think I’d probably have sorted the clutch first, once I was sure it wasn’t seized.

Dad had a vitesse 6. He was a police mechanic and had the engine tuned up in the workshop. When he sold it, the police came to our house. Whoever he sold it to had committed armed robbery in Blackpool. Police chased him but couldn't catch him. They lost him in Nottingham 😁😁. Mind you it was a beautiful car to drive ( had a racing gearbox in it) when going fast it was a race between the speedo, the rev counter and the fuel gauge 😁

Triumph heaters were always blast furnaces. Toledo, Dolomite and Mk2 could all melt skin. However, if the thermostat has dissolved, chances are the water pump impeller has too. If circulation is poor/non existent, that’s where I’d be looking.
