Timelapse of the process for building an Ecosystem pond.
Is this sub-tropical area of Australia we have lots of wildlife around our house, so this little oasis provides a home for many creatures: frogs, insects, birds, fish, etc...
We wanted to create an ecosystem pond that doesn't use any chemicals and works with nature to provide food, shelter, and safety to the wildlife around us.
This pond holds approx 12,000L of water (around 3,000 Gallons).

Thank you Lucy. It was a very hands on project as we tried to do as much as we could ourselves. Our soil is mostly clay, so there were rain water tables trapped in the clay, and it started filtering and kept flooding the hole during the excavation process, so we had to do quite a bit manually (it would have been much easier to do everything with the excavator, but hey, where's the fun! hahaha. You're right, it's good to get kids involved in the garden as this generation (and ours) have grown to be so connected with technology and so disconnected with nature.

@@marianoaran you're welcome.. I'm in the uk unfortunately, So I don't have the good weather the majority of the time, but when the spring comes I like to spend time in the garden. I have a pond outside with gold fish but the majority of my fish are inside.. I'm all for creating a natural environment for my animal's and have been ever since childhood.. I also feel children are too immersed with technology.. I'm always trying to involve my 12 and 14 year old with the fish/other pets but unfortunately they're not interested much at the moment.. Times have changed, I'm mid 30's and can't believe the difference from when I was little.. So much pleasure in nature and how it works.. Was lovely to see the end result of your pond and your children enjoying it too! Thanks for taking the time to reply. 🙂

Hello Rusty. Thanks for your comment :) Depth was the maximum allowed in our state in Australia, otherwise I would have had to put a fence around it. Bigger around? possibly but I was already stretching our budget :p Nice you're watching videos like this instead of COVID stuff :)

Did it ever start growing algae?
@marianoaran
@marianoaran 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but nothing out of control. In summer days at the top of the main waterfall the water was very shallow and it got sun for many hours of the days so it grew an dense algae mat that covered the flat rock. I liked it though, and it was always full of red cherry shrimp that seemed to like it too. Then, there were some algae strings here and there, but they come and go. I usually remove the ones that don't look good when I see them... In general, algae is not a problem at all. Now we're in autumn, temp dropped and water is crystal clear and algae is totally gone.

12,000 liters is only around 3000 gallons. Not 400,000. >_> 400,000 gallons is almost the size of an Olympic swimming pool. LOL Very nice pond though. :)

I did not see when they put the filters machines to keep the water clear and clean
@marianoaran
@marianoaran 3 жыл бұрын
Ronyultsnto this was not filmed in detail, but you can see at 3:30 a container (to the right) that will be placed where it is, and will hold a pump that moves water from the main pond up to the first waterfall shown at 1:35. Filtering is done by all the microorganisms 🦠 living between the river pebbles. There is also a bag placed inside that second container that has little balls with tiny holes for bacteria to live. Another important factor for keeping water clean is constant water circulation, waterfalls that brake water tension at the surface facilitating gas exchange and plants (lots of them).

Hi could I ask how mush this cost??

Hi SL, cost is very relative depending on where you live and the availability of materials and cost of labour in your area. Where do you live?

I'm in Sunshine Coast, so no sure what providers you have around your area. This is the company that helped me build it www.waterscapesaustralia.com.au/ - Here in AU, not sure if you can build a small pond like this one for less than 5~7K (DIY) and most probably around 10~15K if you get a landscaper to do everything for you.

How come there is continuous flow of water?
@marianoaran
@marianoaran 5 жыл бұрын
A pump picks up the water from the lowest part of the pond and pumps it up to the 1st waterfall. All water is constantly being circulated. Runs with solar power.

@marianoaran
@marianoaran 4 жыл бұрын
It was very big for the fishes that went in there compared to the fish tank they were living in at that stage, but not as big as their natural habitat... Maybe the shrimp didn't really realise if it was big or small for them... I guess it's all relative :) You can see underwater life that started living there after a while in this other video :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIC9i2Oihs2mi5I
