When I first saw the long welds at that thickness, I was having nightmares of warping but to then incorporate the surface grinder, brilliant. Excellent job. I am a 60 yr old tradesman and the attention to detail reminds me of tradesmen and machinists back in the late 1800s early 1900s. It is good to see that level of pride in their work and strive for accuracy. A job exceptionally Well done and presented.

When @mymechanics started, I remember writing a comment on how fast his channel grew. He had many 100s of thousands of subscribers before he had posted his 10th video, I think. He absolutely deserves it, as he makes some fantastic stuff. The same thing is not happening to this channel, and I don't see why. The stuff you do and the way you approach the problems (I guess video editing skills etc. also), I find it mesmerizing, educational and inspiring. This channel is incredibly underrated, I think.

My mechanics appeals to people who have an affection for old stuff and the revelation in seeing it come back from dead. MM is brilliant at entertaining them. There are many, many more such people than those interested in the process itself. We can gripe about the algorithm, but that's futile. It's intended to maximize eyes on ads and does that without bias and pretty brilliantly.

Once again, great to see the almost meditative way you work and the inevitable attention to detail. Leveling everything using what you'd already built and the grinder was inspired IMHO. I love getting double duty out of a tool or mechanism. No surprise that it's taken a long time to plan and gather the materials for this one, it's an epic task. I make CNC cut, slot together furniture and having something like this would really help my prototyping process. All my hats off to you simultaneously for an inspiring video.

I agree that the ingenious way he builds things with pretty much home shop tools is amazing. I have one complaint, when I was 18 years old I went to work in a machine shop and the 1st day was safety training. One of the first things they passed around the group was a pair of safety glasses with a broken off drill bit stuck halfway through the lens. This was from a guy doing exactly what he was doing drilling steel on a drill press when a bit about the same size snapped off and hit the glasses. That was an eye opener (pun intended) for me. NEVER drill anything without eye protection!

Love the "level" at the start of the clip. Haven't seen anything like that before, however, I have seen something a little more basic. A good few years ago, a builder friend of mine was helping me build a large deck across the front of my house, and he turned up with his level. A old 20litre paint tin with a piece of metal tube soldered in to the bottom, 25 yards of green garden hose and 6 inches of clear plastic tube. Worked perfectly ...so we thought, until we got to the far side of the house and became aware that the level marks were somewhat off. Slight pause to scratch heads, then discovered obvious flaw in system. Small leak in the old paint tin. 🙄. Blob of silicone sealer and some more water solved problem, and leveling marks accurate enough to satisfy even a picky builder. Deck still up, and level quite some years later. You young guys don't know your born with all that "Modern Technology" 😂😂

Amazing work, hopefully those linear rails hold up, that’s going to be a lot of mass to accelerate between movements. That’ll be more stress than the movement itself (like anything, it’s not the movement, it’s the sudden stop/ start). That top gantry alone. Oof. Good thing is you will be able to modify/ adapt the gantry as you learn and use and if you will be using a mill with g-code can adjust acceleration values to not have the thing rip itself apart.

Hi, Still watching this. Really enjoy watching your videos. Probably a bit late now but while watching you do the shims, I wondered , if you put the shims between the rail and extrusion instead of the extrusion and wood it may work better. I would think as you tighten the bolts the wood will compress slightly where the shims are but between the two metals it likely will not happen and any pressure on the wood will also be evened out. Not an expert on anything just a thought...

Admirable effort in trueing it up but, and I hope I've missed something here, but with multiple pieces of timber and their grain going in all different directions, won't the differential thermal and moisture expansion/contraction render all your work, well, pointless? I mean, better than not doing it but the flatness will be everywhere.
@marcusott2973

Having all the grain running in one direction would make it even worse as you would have all the expansion and contraction in manly one axis. Also this isn't an industrial application where everything has to true up in all environmental conditions and for a million cycles, for his application this will do just fine. Also there is quite so adjustment left in the system. His only alternative would have been welding up a huge underconstruction, like a welding table or hydraulic bench and making one of those and getting it completely flat is a task for which you need quite a substantial metal workshop.

Watching this and other videos he's produced has shown that the guy is a perfectionist and probably won't settle for just good enough, so will put his best efforts into whatever he does. There's no counter argument to that.

Initially I thought it was pointless as well (after the first 10 minutes of the video), but there's a point to his madness. While the wood won't stay true, he needed it to be true to be able to accurately grind in the other parts. Even though the wood will move, at least his metal parts are much closer to perfect now.

On a wooden apparatus, certain measurements are palliative, with humidity and temperature varying considerably. Wanting to have the precision of a cast iron apparatus such as a milling table is uncertain.

I agree. Although beautifully joined this table will move considerably in the moist English climate, possibly enough to bind horizontal movement

Lol! Steel doesn't even come with the precision of flatness this master is after! It cracks me up. Maybe my way of dealing with the symphony of wonder and craftsmanship that exists out there, all over the world! This was an epic build, worth way more than a kidney and remortgage! The experience and wisdom of executing such knowledge is unbelievable to me, yet I know of course, it's out there. Wonder what piece's will come from this build! Absolutely outstanding! 66carpenter

Well... I think I will have to start drinking for the next one. Your patience and attention to detail makes me envious as hell. You must have a week long relaxation and meditation session after a project like this. I'm happy when I manage to spend a few hours on something without going wacko. I am so looking forward to the next one, let alone seeing it cut something (which I presume will be over the top as well) Great work. You are an inspiration to me and I'm sure many others. Thanks.

I like the fact that he does not addd all the fluff to his videos. I have seen a lot of tips and tricks and really appreciate these videos. Attention to detail and ability to challenge himself on difficult projects. When I first saw the lumber I knew this project was gong to large and interesting. Looking forward to the sequel(s).
