Man, this is probably the first time I've seen people show literally step by step how to completely build a thing, including having to go back and make additional cuts so it fits. A ratcheting pvc cutter is one of the coolest tools I've ever bought. I love any excuse to use it.

Tip for anyone building this. Use reverse on your holesaw, for a nice slightly melted finish, and minimize plastic shavings. The result is very pleasing.

@@Stolencamaro Have you actually tried this model? If so, what was so bad? If you're sincere, surely you should pass on your experience so as to prevent others from suffering the same fate? I have built something similar, and it worked very well. Unfortunately I didn't back up the photos I took on my phone which was subsequently stolen so I can't post them as proof. Unfortunately I also used cheap totes which became brittle in the sun and collapsed after two years or so. But I'm putting a new setup together with some refinements and will take photos as I go.

You will need to use a hydroponic nutrients. They are available from many places online. We use the Flora Grow series of nutrients from General Hydroponics, but there are many other options out there. Here is the video of us changing the solution kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYrVhYeCl9FmiNE You will need to change the water and nutrients from time to time but that depends on what plants you are growing. When the plants have drunk about half of the nutrient solution it is time to change it. This could be every couple days for large tomato plants in hot sun or less than once a month for lettuce in cool conditions. It all depends on the plant.

I say INcomplete. What about feeding the plants with some form of liquified nutrition, and what's actually going on inside the tub? Also, what's the purpose or why bother with a drain? Is an inside grow light needed? How long do the plants remain in this container, and are they needing to be transplanted to a larger device? Lots of unanswered questions or vague assumptions.

It is rather simple. Before you start do more research. There are certain things that are critical like pH, but no weeds and only a check every day or so makes it simple and easy.

If you have multiple pieces of pvc to cut at the same length, cut the first one and use it as a measuring piece for the rest of the pieces. Saves some time not having to pull out the measuring tape every time. Thank you for sharing your design ideas.

Used a very similar system for cloning. Found the most important part to these type of systems (well at least for cloning..imagine growing would benefit), is plugging the pump into a Repeat Cycle Timer/repeating timer/whatever else they call them. It turns the power (pump) On for a certain period of time, and cuts the juice for a certain period of time (ex. ON 1 minute/OFF 3 minutes or some can be set for custom times) The roots need time breath/dry out a bit....when I made a few DIY bubble cloner/aerocloners in the past, would always had mixed results. Some would sprouts root, but many of the stems would rot and turn to mush. After plugging into a repeating timer...no problems.

thats what is happening to me.. my clones are all dying.. no roots.. so you think if i put a timer to turn on for a minute and then turn off for 3 minutes continuously will fix this? How often should i change the water? some people add a little chlorine to the solution to avoid bacteria.. wouldnt that hurt the new roots? let me know bro! :)

@@cesar7261 Yeah, the intermittent timer is the key man. Too much water CONSTANT is no good and all I got in the past is mushy stems...maybe a few would take root if I was lucky...the timer like I said is the problem fixer. And yeah, 1 min ON/3 OFF or 1min ON/4 OFF either should be a safe bet. I have seen where folks add some bleach or hydrogen peroxide...I would start with just the timer first and try the chemicals if that don't work (ya might not need them) Happy grows!

I've been running a very similar system for just over 3 months now and LOVE it! Paint the yellow cover Black and it helps prevent mold. I've also added a timer so my pump only runs about 50% of the time.

maybe drill an extra hole for water and put in a float valve so you don't have to add water manuely, just something a plumber sees to improve a good design

We've incorporated this into our many designs for this tote. We've designed and built them into setups that use a single reservoir which gravity-feeds the totes on demand. We like to keep this particular incarnation at hobbyist level and not overcomplicate things.

Yeah just adding water wouldn't be enough, but a gravity fed reservoir of nutrient solution with a float sensor and a valve to automatically refill would be SO COOL. I have these exact same totes but only used one for the reservoir, I'm doing dutch buckets. I'm definitely going to try and make one of these setups with the spray manifold for outdoor vegetables in the spring.

Also, how large should the pump be in GPM (Gallons Per Minute)? 2) What nutrients should be added to a ten gallon batch of solution? 3) What lighting is required, and how long should the light be on every day?

We run the pump all the time. It is 400GPH and is rated for about 25 watts. It both sprays the roots and oxygenates the water in the process. We used General Hydroponics Flora Series nutrients but there are many options out there. Watch this video for information about how much we put in: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYrVhYeCl9FmiNE We use a large window for the primary light source. With large plants like tomatoes it takes a lot of grow lights (too many) to provide enough light. We do have a two smaller lights we use to supplement the non-window side of the plant. As for how long it should be on, that depends on what you are growing and the stage of life of the plant. Newly germinated plants can have the light on 24/7. After that it depends on what you are growing. Most plants grow best with a dark period every day.

I used these same tots in 2010 , made huge marihuana warehouses with them tellered with gravity lines to a ppm/ph monitoring room. I used ultra sonic foggers to produce a true aeroponics mist. this worked great for beginning growth then as roots grew is size DWC took over and got amazing growth

Thought this was so cool I had to make two of these…awesome! After a few months I noticed my roots were super long and getting caught up in the pump impellers…so I used PVC to create a frame that sits just above the pump…used some extra window screen laying around (not metal screen) to cover it up, secured with zip ties. Now the roots stay out of the sump. I also made PVC cages that sit on top of each cover, and twine to help vining plants grow upward. Wrapped those cages with Mylar sheets from Amazon, added a couple of grow lights - and suddenly I’m a farmer. I have no idea what I’m doing but this is fun. All because of you three guys, thank you!
