Hopefully you’re watching the build series. I put a window on three walls and a door with window on the front. Also small windows in the lofts. Almost done with interior walls and ready to go to shelving and furnishings. Will be camping out there this summer!!

I like how you figured out your rafter cuts, i did the same, i had trouble trying to use the different formulas to figure out the birdsmouth ans what not. Did u have to go back and tweek on your cuts any?
@LivingOurAmericanDream Жыл бұрын
No, measured all of them out and precut every one. They all for nicely in the field.

Did you end up venting the floor in any way? Seems like moisture would get trapped in there and cause mold or rot?

Question is there a reason you went vertical with the sheathing as apposed to the standard horizontal and stagger them to make the structure more stable and solid
@LivingOurAmericanDream2 жыл бұрын
No. I’m just not a pro builder. Probably should have done a few things different on this build, but learning as I go. Regardless, it’s solid. Won’t have any stability issues.

Looks like your lumber stayed good and straight. That’s awesome I’m glad you had success with that. Did you get a lot of shrinkage? The aspen I’ve killed and used has shrunk quite a bit. Looks great so far!
@LivingOurAmericanDream3 жыл бұрын
So far so good. I’d say about 80% of the 2x4s are good to go. Most of the bad ones have too much live edge which allowed them to warp being so close to the exterior of the tree. For shrinkage I’d say an inch or so on length over 9’ although I didn’t really keep track when we milled them. Thanks for watching.

Do you need need a header and a double plate above windows with a king stud down the sides. Did you just leave these out because the windows weren’t that big?
@LivingOurAmericanDream2 жыл бұрын
Hi David. Yes, I went without due to window and overall building size. There has been a lot of criticism in the comments for doing that. I’m no expert but I think it’ll be ok. Time will tell. Thanks for watching and joining the conversation!

What website did you use to draft out your cabin plans?
@POTheta001 Жыл бұрын
No concerns about rain after you build the floor but before the roof goes on?
@LivingOurAmericanDream Жыл бұрын
Had lots of concerns. If OSB gets wet it will bulge and be ruined. We tarped the entire structure and moved expeditiously to get the roof on. It all worked out and we didn’t have any issues.
@POTheta001 Жыл бұрын
@@LivingOurAmericanDream Makes sense. Thank you. How long did it take to build the whole thing? I figure you could get the foundation and floor joists up in one trip, but then once you seal the underneath it's go time!

Just stumbled onto your channel so i apologize if you've mentioned this--- curious if the town/township or whatever had any issues with your cabin build? I believe many areas in MI require at least 1000ft for new builds. Not sure if the post foundations are allowed or whatever other codes you have to follow. Guessing you just have to contact officials in whatever area you live in... Curious if you faced that stuff?
@LivingOurAmericanDream2 жыл бұрын
Township doesn’t know about this building as it’s under the square footage threshold for permitting in my area. As far as they’re concerned it’s a well built deer hunting blind 😁.

Curious if there is a reason why you chose to have such small windows? I'm wanting to build a cabin similar to this size, possibly a little bigger. But I definitely want large windows on all sides. I want to be able to enjoy the outdoors when I'm sitting in the middle of the cabin.
@LivingOurAmericanDream3 жыл бұрын
Great question! For us, I am building to sleep 5 and include a small kitchen in the layout. I was running out of wall space so chose a bit smaller windows. If you have the room, I would go twice this size. These are 30” wide, 36” tall. The uppers will be 24” wide and 36” tall because of limited space. Thanks for watching.
@theoriginaldashriprock3 жыл бұрын
@@LivingOurAmericanDream yes, that's hopefully what I am able to do. I want as big a Windows as I can put in. I just want to be able to enjoy the outdoors even when I'm sitting in the cabin on rainy days, or while laying in bed at night when there's a full moon out. Good luck with your cabin!

I used the sketching and markup function in BlueBeam, a pdf reader and markup software. Nothing fancy by any means but it worked. I was able to dimension everything and mock up the layout just like in any more expensive CAD software. Simple enough for this project for sure. Thanks for watching.
