I just bought a ENORMOUS tower case made by Sunbeamtech from the mid 2000's.(It took me 2 weeks of googling to find out who the hell made it). Gonna build it into a vintage gaming PC rig that is period correct (the case has been gutted). It's funny because even though it's cheap chinese crap company, it's made extremely well, and it is extremely heavy (its gotta be at least 25 lbs empty). The steel they made it with is very thick. The original build from the company was an Area 51/alien theme so I'm taking it back to that. I have to use my own creativity a bit because all these parts are difficult to find 20 years later. Been looking at old PC gaming conventions and trade shows from the early 2000's for inspiration.

To this day, this is still my case. I have it for almost 15 years, never had any issues with the vertical drive. Discs never fell off, and I didn't tilt it or put those stickers that came with it. The advantage of the optical drive in this position is to make the case smaller with a full ATX motherboard. I've tried to find another case to replace this one with similar dimensions and it's almost impossible unless I buy a mini ITX mobo. Even if the case does not have an optical drive, no mid-towers are small like this one. That's why I kept it for so long. And I like the clean visuals of it. Regarding the fact it has no dust filters, I easily solved that by buying magnetic ones. And I never had any issues with overheating, even back when I used to live in a tropical country with room temperatures next to 40ºC. So, people complaining about "airflow" are nitpicking. It does the job for an average build. Of course, it was never meant to be used on top rigs. Anyways, I liked that it was featured in an LGR video, even if it's not praising it. 😅

Anything that isnt retro or low watt just bakes itself to death, Everything broke, the button, the leds, the arms that clip into the chassis, Taking off the bezel too many times breaks it, if you jostle the wires too much they Dis attach from the power buttons pcb board, it's horrible quality.

Wow, cool to see a video of this forgotten case! Despite having no need for it, I bought one back (in 2010 or even earlier) because it was so compact 'n cute :) Also, the "baby blue" colour kinda matched the colour of the logo of the company I worked for, plus the vertical optical drive was neat! Ended up building a a cheap entry gaming computer for a relative with it. It certainly was a cheap, light and fairly flimsy case to be completely honest... Also ventilation was poor, and managing/hiding cables was tricky! (I recall pulling some cables to the front portion so they could nestle by the 5.25 bay) On the other hand, I think Clint might have underestimated how compact it was for a case that supported ATX, decently big GPU:s, a 5.25 drive and two 3.5 drives, which was really "good enough" for most uses back then... Not having *any* horizontal hard drive trays or 5.25 bays in front of the motherboard was still kinda rare when this case was new. (put it next to any regular ATX case and you'll see the difference) It really was cute and charming somehow! I kinda miss it :(

I remember building in this case back when it came out. At that time I was a Computer Systems Engineer for a large company, and had more spare hardware (usually engineering samples) to play with than I knew what to do with. I would build computers in all kinds of oddball cases, play around with them for a wile, and eventually give them away to whoever needed one. This case was a bit frustrating, but it was kind of fun since it was different. Obviously optical drives were more important back then, and were still quite common in most systems. I was thinking it was kind of dumb to have that cover in the front over the drive, but not having it in place with the drive installed. What I did was use some of the white squishy foam double sided tape to attach that cover to the front of the drive tray. I can't remember if I took the cover off the tray first or lowered the drive slightly, but I did get it on there, and it looked much better. It took a little trial and error to get it lined up perfectly so it looked right, and didn't bind while opening and closing, but it's doable. Maybe you can try that on yours as well.

You'd be surprised at how a big GPU you can get in a modern case, as in older cases a GPU would usually foul on HDD or optical drives, as we don't have these anymore there is more room available. For instance I have my Tuf gaming 3080 in a mATX case. I also have a Tuf gaming 4090, which is ridiculously big, which I have in a full size case. The ironic thing about the 4090 is the card part of the GPU is actually very compact it's just the cooling solution that is massive.

I've got a Phanteks Enthoo Primo, which is a giant case.. and a 4090 (gigabyte gaming oc) JUST barely fit, with maybe 1mm of clearance, and was an absolute PITA to get in (scratched everything up). Modern GPUs really are stonkin huge, and it's awful. So is the trend to get rid of optical drive bays and having less slots/ports on motherboards, and having solid glass instead of airflow mesh, especially on side panels. HAF-X was probably the best case I ever owned, wonder if they ever made a modern version of it..
@yakacm
@yakacm Жыл бұрын
@@AceStrife I've got a 4090 too, my case is a BeQuiet Silent Base 802, and the card fits perfectly. I think modern cards aren't that much longer than older ones, and for me it was always the length that was the issue. You are right thou, 4090 is massive, I thought my 3080 was big, but if you lay them next to each other, it really shows the size difference.

Hi, I've been following you for years and when I saw this video I couldn't believe it! This is the case that I wanted so badly when it came out but at the time I had just bought a new case so even though it was so inexpensive I never bought it and it has always stuck in my mind. A year ago I built a pc for Windows XP (coincidentally just perfect to celebrate 20 years of Win XP... I realized it only after building it since many builds made to celebrate appeared on YT) to play old games and to reuse my Pentium 4 prescott 3.4 ghz and my Radeon HD3850 AGP that had been sitting in a box for years and... that case came back to my mind! I searched for months and finally managed to find a new and sealed one and at a good price too! (about half of its original price) I couldn't believe it and I was so happy (it's practically impossible to find here in Italy), I seriously believe it's one of the most aesthetically interesting cases ever, mine is black just like yours, I too initially would have preferred to find one in another color but since everything else in the build is black (monitor, keyboard and mouse, speakers, desk) in the end it fits very well and even after a year I always linger to admire him. I remember that at the time the reviews were quite positive regarding aesthetics and size but everyone said that the limited space and limited airflow was not suitable for a gaming PC, I found quite the opposite! The 3.4 ghz Prescott pentium 4 is ''famous'' for being one of the processors that heats up the most, in the old case it easily reached 80 degrees and even the Radeon HD3850 heats up a lot exceeding 70 degrees, I replaced the Sapphire heatsink with a Coolermaster Coolviva Z1 by putting an 80 mm brushless fan with blue LED and 3 other identical fans in the case (one below and two on the back) and now even after hours of benchmark or games both components always remain below 60 degrees (the processor it has the same cooler, a Coolermaster Aero 7) so the case does its job very well and is now super quiet (the Sapphire GPU cooler sounded like an airplane lol). I also had no problems with the cd player, the two stickers applied at the bottom are more than enough to keep the cd stable enough. Anyway, I'm glad you liked the case and if you dedicate more videos or upgrades to it, I'll be happy to watch them. Greetings from Italy.

After years using ages old second-hand cases for modern hardware to save money and building in cramped, sharp boxes designed for Pentium 4s I finally got a Corsair 4000D Airflow. I had assumed that cable routing paths were for overly fussy builders and that I'd miss having the space for optical drives if I needed them but... goddamn, I cannot go back now. From the weird gimmicky build, huge amount of front space dedicated to bays, lack of airflow, lack of filtering, venting hot air through the PSU, cramped space and ugly Molex adapters this build beautifully exemplifies all the problems with 2000s/early 2010s PCs.

Back in 2009 I remember building that exact PC and I still use that tower til this day . I also done plenty of upgrades including an updated motherboard,ram,SSD and utilizing an optical drive with all the reading/burning features including both Blu Ray and HD DVD.

if you put more padding on the disc drive button or pusher it might lessen the gap on the button making it easier to press

I rocked a GMC R3 Corona for quite a few years, it was awesome looking, but the disc drive was already somewhat useless even back then. Still, loved it to bits.

When GMC left the US, I worked for a company that ewasted all their old cases. We had like 2000 units across 10 diffrent models of computer case. I think their best case model was the Home theater cases both the upright case and entertainment system case. Both included remotes and a bunch of other goodies.

I'm not going to lie, I didn't get the name at first and was genuinely disappointed that this wasn't an ATX mid-tower PC that had a built-in toaster. Edit: That solution you came up with to combat the discs falling out was so simple that I'm flabbergasted the manufacturers didn't think of it. Boggles the mind really.

I still own my "sky blue" GMC R2 Toast with the orignal setup i made : Intel P4 HT, Saphire Vapor X HD 3870 and a Plextor DVD burner. I never have trouble with a disk falling down. It's come back to Windows XP and make a nice retro XP setup.

i had a bulldozer back in the day, i wouldnt hold your breath on trying to get one. i had to RMA the case twice as the front panel came broken on one and the other it just shattered when trying to remove it. this looked super high quality in comparison.

I've been running my PC in this case since 2009!! Ditched the CD rom over time sadly but currently running 4060 Graphics card, i7 CPU with Be Quiet Cooler, 16Gb ram. It's a beast. Have looked at changing the case but I love the form factor and it stays cool.

Unironically dig a lot of these designs. If I were to build a retro operating system or device. I'd definitely use some of them. The bulldozer is pretty great actually. Thanks for the review as always Clint. I enjoy seeing all sorts of tech from a different period.

My God I actually had an Orange R2 as my main case in my early 20's because once or twice a month me and 3-4 other friends would head on over to whichever friend was hosting that weekend on a Friday and LAN until Sunday afternoon. It was amazing fun. When we started I had a Thermaltake Kandalf LCS system which weighed like 26kg all up with everything in it so shifting to the ultra small and lightweight R2 was a perfect for me.

Can confirm. I bought this case when it was on the market, and yes I had a couple of discs fall into the drive. I had a few cuts from the edges. And the idea is indeed better than the execution.just wait till the metal holding the ODD in bends downward and you can't open the drive anymore without persuading it.

Great video, as always! A bit of a random thought, but a long time ago I had a horizontal model of an HP Kayak PC, and since it was pretty huge, it was a bit of a problem to store it horizontally, so it stood on its side. That sure made CDs accumulate scratches much more quickly!

I have the r2 toast in my living room and the r4 bulldozer on my main gaming rig. I’ve had them since they were still being manufactured, and modified them in the intervening years. Used to run a closed loop water cooler and I do have a full length GTX 1080 in it. It’s always been an exercise in fiddling to get everything in, but I just can’t bring myself to replacing it. I prefer the bulldozer drive design, better angle. I have to hold the disk in place on the toast while the drive closes.
